Statting Dantalian no Shoka (Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian)
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:34:55 PM »

For those who haven't seen the series but want to contribute... it's episodic and most of the premise is explained in the first episode. Watch it. Or if you don't like TV, there's a fan translation of some of the original light novels out there. :p

Any thoughts here?
D&D-wise, my first thought was to make Dalian an archivist with Uncanny Forethought (imbue with spell ability), but the spells used in the series are clearly higher than lv2. Or you could go the artificer + cost reducers route, combined with wand modulationCS shenanigans. Using PF's Balanced Scale of Abadar PrC to summon scrolls for Huey to UMD is a good fit, but it's 1/week and doesn't allow spamming the item's effect. One of the biggest obstacles is that Dalian doesn't seem able to use Phantom Books herself; going into weirder territory you could make the pair a dvati hathran, or have one count as a focus component for the other.

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
For a really quick and dirty hack, you could say the Key Bearers are what'sthename Sha'irs and call the associated Biblioprincess the Gen familiar. It's not exactly the pinnacle of faithfulness, but it has the highest chance of working in an actual game.

For something closer to the material, I'd actually call the Biblioprincesses ambulant magic items of some sort, embedded in a living person or living construct. Call it a Command Word item of Gate or so, and the Library itself a demiplane holding all those books (most of them also magic items activated by Command Word). After that, just give the Key Bearers normal builds for what they do (Huey being an airforce pilot would probably be some skill-based class with decent BAB, Hal could be a Swordsage or something).

It's all about vision and making reality conform to your vision. By dropping a fucking house on it.

I find Huey to not be anything that flashy as far as the anime goes, actually. He looks like an Expert with EWP (firearms) and ranks in UMD and etc. Or maybe Rogue. :p

Not 100% sure what Dalian might be, but I think Agita's 2nd idea would work best as far as the anime goes, again.

Obvious, but some Phantom Books might be artifacts and whatnot.
