Sounds like Thom's getting an early start on that equation I posted previous  :D

It's way way easier in PbP to just use the point buy method. I will explain it in more detail once I get home (Yup, I am still at work). For those of you who have the PHB1 already they give you a list of about a dozen sample arrays you can come up with using the point buy method. Or you can come up with your own using the method. There are some point buy calculators online where you plug in the points you have available and then as you alter the stats it tells you how may points you have left.

If you want to play a magic user, you can always go Warlock (possibly my favorite class,PHB1) or Scorcerer(PHB2) and want to be a striker. If you want to go for the leader role with a magic user bent then Bard(PHB2) is an arcane leader.

With point buy your stats start off at 8,10,10,10,10,10 and you have 22 points to spend.

9 to 13 cost 1 point each.
14 to 16 are 2 points each.
17 is 3 points.
18 is 4 points.

I like the arrays given in the book though, makes it easy and gives a pretty good selection.

OK sandboxing this so someone check my math - If I play a half elf warlock this is what my scores could look like:

SKILL                    STR  CON   DEX   INT   WIS   CHR
Base Score              12   16   11   14   8   14
After Racial Modifier   12   18   11   14   8   16

If M is taking a cleric / leader role, that makes me the defender then, doesn't it?  I am good at soaking up damage....  =)

run down of roles at present it looks like
Thom is thinking Leader (Cleric)
Otto is thinking Striker (Warlock)
Dave is thinking Controller (...)

Steve you can go with just about anything. If we get Jim to play then we will have some role overlap anyhow and if we are still missig a role after everyone decides we can eithe open it up to a 6th player or I can run a GM PC. Was trying to avoid the latter. If you do want to play a defender we could revive an incarnation of your old Dalaim Spearcatcher and you could make a dwarf Battlemind (class in PHB3).

Otto looks good, but depends on what pact your choosing. If your going with a pact with a fiend then you should be good.

I have no idea how to tell if the pact is with a fiend but I was thinking infernal pact because it's at-will power sounds the coolest

I'm thinking Eladrin Wizard (Controller)

Here's what my character is looking like....
Before racial adjustment 8, 11, 14, 18, 10, 10

After Racial Adjustment
STR 8
CON 11
DEX 16
INT 20
WIS 10
CHA 10

I can solve a Rubix Cube in 2 seconds....too bad I am too weak to carry one...

That's the one I meant I couldnt think of the actual name of it. My mind is mush from too much work this week. Found out I need to be here over the weekend too... :banghead

Yes Infernal pact has a pretty cool at-will and a number of pretty cool powers too. My preferrence has always been Fay pact ever since I had seen the Teleporter build in the second Dragon magazine to come out after 4E's release. Want to hear somethign funny? When I first thought to ask you all to play, I envisioned what you all would probably initially pick. I hit the nail on the head for Otto, and I figured Dave would go Controller (my guess was wizard for him). I was way off on Thom who I thought would go Rogue for sure. The wild card was Steve I wasn't sure what he might decide on.

I actually initially wanted to try out a ranger but when you suggested warlock I thought it looked pretty sweet.

Any response from Jim on possibly joining?

Half the fun of playing a warlock is working into your background the who's you made a pact with and how you came to make a pact with that entity. I have a couple dragon magazine articles that can help you there if you want a little help fleshing stuff out. The Demonomicon is probably another good book to check out for ideas on who your pact could be with.

I will have to add that before you get too far into the whole binding evil entities to your will, your alignments should still be Unaligned, Good, or Lawful Stupid...err...I mean Good.

As for what else would be a good fit. Depends on how much damage vs controll you guys want. Most standard 5 player groups will probably have 2 Strikers and one from each other role. If your cleric is a battle cleric he will likely be right up there in the thick of melee with the Defender. A good control wizard that goes first can likley shape the battlefield quite well.

As long as we are on the subject of backgrounds. Most of the initial adventures take place in the Grey Vale and we will begin in Loudwater. The Forgotten Realms Players guide has alot of good info on this area but in the Realms I am running instead of 150 years of advancment since 3.5E it's 550 years. I will post more specific setting infomation in the handout section soon so you can round out backgrounds then. Seems I may have to get that info in sooner then I thought  ;)
