Monster Game - Interest?
« on: September 23, 2011, 11:13:13 PM »
First of all, I would not like to DM this game. I'm suggesting this idea as a player.

Alright, that's out of the way. One game that has always caught my attention, and that I haven't been able to play, is a monster game, where the PCs play as monsters, and have to work with the results of that (unless the setting lets it happen (cough*Eberron*cough), they probably won't be accepted by "civilized" races, etc). As a result, I'd like to see if we can get an ongoing game started. That being said, I can see this run in either 3.5e or 4e.

3.5 version: Use stuff from this thread. Easy to use, easy to run. *nough said.

4e version: Bit different here, more radical. Each person stats up a monster, which they will play as. At mutual discretion, and leveling up, they can gain (or replace, or upgrade) abilities. I think that using Themes as "classes", from which you pick your encounter/recharge/utility powers would be interesting to work through. People would pull up a vanilla monster, with role and abilities based around what they wanted to play, and use the Theme powers as the "big guns". Experimental idea, what do you think?

I've been looking for a chance to play a Son/Daughter of Silence all year; A game finally was going to start that would allow me to play, but then it didn't happen. I'd love a chance to finally play it. :D

Well... you could ask Boz if you can join this one... We're down to 3 PCs at the moment, and he mentioned opening it up to new people.
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

What are the specifics of Boz's game? I'm interested as it looks pretty cool, though I'm unfamiliar with the homebrew you guys are using.

Well, with about 4to people so far interested, there are certainly enough players. Maybe some generous DM could just copy Boz's houserules to save time setting a game up? I assume Boz doesn't want to run 7 players at once. :)

A homebrew only game sounds intriguing, to say the least. I'd be perfectly willing to play a game under those rules, but I would almost certainly play a monster of sorts.

I'd love to play a monster/homebrew game, but I know there aren't a ton of DMs on the boards with the time willing to take on an adventure.

I offer my services as a DM here, since this is a great oportunity to playtest monster classes.

Character creation rules for those interested.
System: D&D 3.5

Party size: 4-6 players.

Forums to be used: www.plothook.net because I'm already running a couple campaigns there.

Starting level: 8

Gear:
Standard wealth by level, no spending more than 1/2 your WBL in a single item, no pre-game crafting unless it's something really essential to you.

Sources:
All 3.5 books under the sun allowed (but no dragon magazine as I simply don't have easy acess to it). Homebrew material is ok after being reviewed by me (my homebrew of course being automatically aproved). I reserve myself the right to ban certain combinations or specific items I may find too cheesy. Also Oriental Adventures and Arms and equipment guide wich are technically 3.0 but work just fine in 3.5

Alignment:
You can be any alignment as long as you're willing to work in a team.

Stats:32 point buy.

HP:
Maximum HP at 1st level, then either roll or take average.

Extras:
This rules for diplomacy.

Flaws and traits allowed as in the srd (aka up to two flaws and one trait, and you can only pick flaws/traits from the srd list)
Now another thing to decide would be the setting/adventure, which I'm a little unsure what to run. Any particular preference? You want to go on "regular"  questing, sandbox on Eberron/Forgoten Realms(with some tweaks of mine of course), or be villanous monsters that terrorrize cities and scheme country/world conquest?

Not sure I have time to sign up as a PC, but I have a funny idea for a game... How about the PCs are henchmen/pawns/etc of some powerful evil (like Xykon), and for the most part view going around terrorizing villages and whatever as just their job, and know that facing adventurers is "the lesser evil" when compared to facing their boss if they defy him? Maybe they're not even all that bad themselves... they just got roped into a bad situation (perhaps because of their "special powers").  :p

OK... now I want to play the umbrella monster...

I like this idea of Phaedrux's, and I'm not gonna lie, when you said umbrella monster, my mind didn't go to the OotS charrie but to an image of the Tyrant.

Also, I love you oslecamo! Your stuff is sweet, and I'm glad we've got you on board to dm!

Now, trying to decide between a kython, a Tyrant-like creature, or a combo of Force Golem/Awakened iron Golem...

I very much like the idea of being the Quirky Miniboss squad-like group for some great evil. We can play as minions who honestly support our employer, mercenaries who will move on when the evil is vanquished, or perhaps taking the place, becoming evil lords or somesuch thing. It's definitely a novel idea, and if we're going to have monsters in the party (kinda the point, for me), then being "villains" can easily support that.

Also, glad to have you on board, osclecamo. I'll see what I can come up with for a PC later.

I've played the role of evil henchmen before, and it can be a lot of fun if done right. :devil  I'd be interested in seeing where you guys take this.
Till we meet again in Valhalla...

Someone should be/have a deadly dancer (cohort), which they "talk" to constantly.

Deadly dancer: prances around, waving its bladed appendages
Master: What's that Lassie? Timmy fell down the well? Lead the way, then!

Great, looks like everybody's motivated with the quirky miniboss squad theme, so I'll be going with that. Need to go sleep now, but feel free to start fleshing out your character ideas and discussing motivations.

It would  also help to know if you prefer to be mercenaries looking for trouble, to have some evil NPC's elite minions, or be your own independent group.  For the later the campaign could start with you taking over some castle/dungeon/village to turn into your base of operations I guess.

Oh, and, of course, you'll all need to take at least 1 level in a monster class/prc. :p

I can imagine my character "talking" to the deadly dancer, it waving its appendages and me gesticulating and mouthing words silently, finally we both nod and everyone else wonders what the hell we were saying to eachother. :D

-----------
Although... As much as I really want to play the son/daughter of silence, there are some really rad other monster classes. XD
