Preventing undead messing with you or your minions?
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:55:13 PM »
1. I've been thinking for awhile, let's say your character is an Undead (Necropolitan, Lich, Vampire, etc.) is there a valid reason to assume that mindless undead will leave your undead character alone?  What about intelligent undead such as Mohrgs.  Let's say a Mohrg has been trapped in your dungeon for ages while you continually feed it bodies.  Is there a precedent for that Mohrg wanting to attack you just cause you're there or would it ignore you like the Borg?

2. Is there any convenient permanent way of preventing uncontrolled undead from attacking certain creatures, say regular cityfolk?  I imagine letting my dungeon full of Mohrgs and Greater Shadows out some day, and ideally they would not decimate my citizens.

i imagine that 'intelligent' undead can be reasoned / negotiated with to some extent.

mindless ones are gonna need leashes of some sort.

also, imo/e "the dead hate the living"... so generally being not living means at least mindless undead dont care about other undead.

At the least, you're not valid food, they can't feed on you for the aggressive types(other than ghouls I think)

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

1) Mindless undead will not care about you if you, yourself are undead.  They might be ordered to attack you by an outside influence, but they will not do so instinctively.  Intelligent undead either will or will not attack you based on their attitude towards you.  That Mohrg will likely despise you for keeping it imprisoned all this time, even if you feed him corpses.  He's still a prisoner.

2) If you can get some sort of Mythal-based Hide From Undead effect going, that would do the trick for the Mindless undead.  Intelligent ones would get a save, of course, but those can be reasoned with (or simply ordered to lay off the peasantry if you're significantly stronger than they are).  Greater Shadows, however, have an inescapable craving for Strength, so they're liable to go out killing anything and everything they actually see if you don't keep them well fed.

His threads are part of a grander scheme that I've been wanting to enact for who-knows-how-long.

There is a ricockulous magic item that gives a permanent Hide from Undead which even works against intelligent undead with no save... I forget exactly where or what it was from, but I do remember it was fairly cheap. I think it is in the Bunko's Basement thread...

Shirt of Wraith Stalking from MIC.  It's only like 6,000 GP or so.

Edit:  Page 216, part of the item set Wraith's Woe.

Yeah, it's cheap for an adventurer.  Prohibitively expensive to supply to an entire, living populace, though.
