Mizar enters the room with a light step, looks around, distracted, then waves at the duke and his counsellor and waits patiently for his turn to speak.

I, like my companions, am grateful for your invitation. My name is Mizar, I follow the way of Dragons, and that has brought me from the widest deserts to the deepest seas. I am now at your table, ready to embark in whatever task you may have for me.

To some it may seem Jax is ill at ease with the situation of being surrounded by their "escort" but he figured it likely best to respect the summons as he would one from the Court back home.  These were his lands afterall or at least he claimed them.

On the journey to the Duke he tried to be wary of his surroundings as well as his strange traveling companions.

Arriving Jax moves to the seat indicated dropping his pack unceremoniously as the several of the travelers addressed the Duke.  Before taking his seat he looks to the Duke, "I am Jax, thank you for your... hospitality.  Ask your questions I shall answer as I am able."  While speaking with assurance and not trying to be rude, Jax had rarely had patience for or seemingly even comprehension of social graces.

I am Kalal Al'Khazad, Guardian of the Temple of the Sun, servant of Amaunator. I have left my post temporarily to aid these two brethren, Mizar and his brother Mialgru, in their quest to return Mizar back to his true form. If their mission intersects with yours, I will aid you.

Before we go on, I would have the aged ibis introduce himself.  I would see him in his true form while he is in my presence, uncomfortable though it may be.

Ah, you have seen through my little disguise. The Ibis peeps up. What is in a form? I have so many forms that I all consider true, yet you assume that I have only one true form? It says as it turns into an aged kobold. The kobold looks incredibly old, the mighty golden-green scales it once had has long ago faded to a grey-dull colour, only a tinge of their former glory still exists, his eyes are reddish reptilian, but aged and greyish, one of them almost seems blind. As it sits there on the table, little larger than a house-cat it seems incredibly old, and incredibly weak. All it carries is a walking stick, and a simple set of brown homespun clothes.
This is the cursed form I have been damned to assume as my real form. I am Mialgru, Shapeshifter extraordinaire. I am an ally of both Amaunator and the ancient dragons, but for the moment, my service is to Thoth.

Brone gave a smirk, thinking of how wonderful it was he wasn't the only one hiding in plain sight. This group might actually be fun to kill with.

Well then, it certainly seems that each of you has some talents that may be of service to me, the Duke says as he glances again over each of you, but I must be certain that your interests will not be detrimental to the realm.  So, to the questions.  I will warn you that my advisor Kulgan can determine the truth of anything that you say, and that any attempts to lie will be quite detrimental to your health.

First Question
Are you spies in the service of someone or something else?
If you answered no to the first question
Are you willing to submit your names and a piece of you to Kulgan when signing your contract of service?
If you answered yes to the second question.
What would you wish as a reward for the successful completion of your first mission?  I will take all requests, and given the level of service and the request given I will compensate you as closely as I deem your service warrants.
The Mission if you are still interested
I have been short of Rangers of Crydee since I have become Duke.  I once served in this force and know the forest well.  During my time I came to know and to keep a watch over the lands and the locations of mischief that evil have taken in the past.  During the Riftwar the vigilance that we were once able to keep over these areas waned, and I fear based upon the recent reduction in the number of merchants, and the general level of activity in the deeper forests that our lack of vigilance may have gone on for too long.  Your first mission is to check a nearby keep that was once a bastion of evil for the Moredhel (dark elves) and their forces from the Temple of Elemental Evil.  Determine if there is any activity at this location, and if there is any plans you can uncover.  If there is not I will have another scouting mission for you.  I bid you good luck, and ask that you please excuse me as I have other business to attend.  Enjoy the meal, and please direct any further questions to Kulgan.
Are you spies in the service of someone or something else?

I am not a spy for anyone, and neither are my companions as far as I know, my lord.

Are you willing to submit your names and a piece of you to Kulgan when signing your contract of service?
I have already given my name, but a piece of me, what good would that do?

What would you wish as a reward for the successful completion of your first mission?  I will take all requests, and given the level of service and the request given I will compensate you as closely as I deem your service warrants.

Normally I would not bother your grace with such trivial matters, but the current situation me and my companions find ourselves in forces me to gladly accept any material rewards you might see fit to offer.

I would gladly go to the old keep provided that my companions agree as well and will help uproot any evil that still resides in there.

Brone was good about keeping his mouth mostly shut. He listened intently, then answered with boisterousness, but respect.

"A spy? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No, my Lord, no spy. Though I could be, if you had need...

"My name and whatever I can part with, providing it doesn't cause me damage financially or physically, are yours.

"I'm a sellsword; I crave gold, wargoods of exceptional quality, favors if naught else. Beyond that.... I could only ask for.... well, but that would be a ridiculous request.... I would like to be given instruction in ranging or swordcraft. But like you said, you are short of rangers. Gold and treasure would suffice, my Lord...

"..... As a scout and party guard, I could serve well, and will indeed accept this request. Just to be clear, though, should we discover any plans or activity, is it our directive to withdraw and report, or engage and eliminate? No qualms, just a difference in services offered..."

Are you spies in the service of someone or something else?
I am not a spy. Mialgru answers with a wicked smile.

Are you willing to submit your names and a piece of you to Kulgan when signing your contract of service?
You have my name, a piece of me? Well, I would require it to be kept under tight observation, and a seal to be made so that I would be sure to receive it back without it having been tampered with.

What would you wish as a reward for the successful completion of your first mission?  I will take all requests, and given the level of service and the request given I will compensate you as closely as I deem your service warrants.

I have little use for material wealth, but I am a collector of fine artifacts. Oh, and I would want that aforementioned piece of myself back. Can't have too many people running around with dragon scales you know.

A temple in a forest, it seems like you've found the right group! Me, my brother Mizar, Kal and Beorn are experts at temples in hard to get places. And we have nothing against slaying evil elves if they get in our way. ...
My talents will help the group, hopefully evenly in combat and scouting, being able to fly and hide well is usually a merit for any scout.

Mizar listens silently to the questions asked by the Duke and then to the answers of old and new companions. Breathes heavily and then starts talking.

Are you spies in the service of someone or something else?
I've never been a spy in my whole life.

Are you willing to submit your names and a piece of you to Kulgan when signing your contract of service?
Submitting my name sure won't be a problem, but I'd like to know more about this piece of me you'd want me to leave. I don't think I'd be willing to cut off a finger. says with a smirk on his face.

What would you wish as a reward for the successful completion of your first mission?  I will take all requests, and given the level of service and the request given I will compensate you as closely as I deem your service warrants.

Whatever you choose as my reward will be fine. I never had much gold to my name so I guess even a simple reward in gold pieces would be fine. The more the better. Ah... Greedy me... concludes with an amused sigh.

Me and my companions, as my brother said, are very comfortable in the wilderness and exploring temples is an activity that we enjoyed even in the recent past. As to the Evil that might lurk in that part of the forest or in the temple itself, if you let us, it will be our pleasure to annihilate it.
To put two and two together regarding Mialgru & Mikkel (1d20+9=15)
Wisdom check if more appropriate to put two and two together regarding Mialgru & Mikkel (1d20+3=6)
Jax watches and considers Mialgru while those assembled address the Dukes questions.  While others are speaking he considers wither he would be interested in working for the duke.  By the time it was his turn to speak he had decided that it could serve his interests well as well as doing some good.

"Seems it would have been wiser not to warn and simply see who was dishonest with you Duke", he says matter of factly.

I am no spy.  I am a Ranger Scout of the of my people, a Protector in the Order of the Way.  The aid you need I can grant and will gladly do so with skill and honor.  But as with the others here I have reservations about the harm that can be done with the flesh you request.  With assurances I will grant that request.

"As for reward, there is but one thing in my heart should it be within your means to aid me.  I've been gone from home from home and wife for four years now.  My son will now be four.  Search though I have as yet I have found no means to return as yet.  I seek return to my home and family.  If possible within the year due to personal considerations."

"If that is not possible", obviously saddened by the thought, "I would ask for the freedom to live upon and range upon your lands if by that time I have proven worthy of such trust."

Bobbynock listens intently as each of those gathered answers the Duke's questions while he ponders his own answer to each.

"I am not a spy. However, I am a seeker of arcane lore and secrets!" A wide toothy grin appearing under the handlebar moustache.

"My name has already been submitted, and as long as the 'piece' of me is a few strands of hairs, a toe or finger nail, an eye-lash...that will not be a problem, providing it is returned to me upon completion of the tasks in question."

"For payment, I would like access to your library. Some arcane scrolls, which will be named later, and of course magical equipment"

He finished with a respectful bow before turning his attention to the offered meal.

The robed man listens intently to your replies and then speaks, his voice calm and slow with the patience of age, "Don't worry.  The piece of you is merely my way of accessing you so that you may check in while on the trail.  It also provides a backup should your companions wish to try using magic to return you from Lim's Kragma's halls should something terrible happen.  All I need is a some hair, a scale, a piece of a nail, anything that comes freely given, you will not be required to draw blood or cut anything from your body.  I will put this material in a sealed jar to which only I and the Duke will be privy.

To further describe your situation.  At current your mission is not just scouting, but also to investigate, and if possible remove any trouble from the moathouse.  Rumors are starting to circulate, although no actual evidence has been found that caravans have gone missing, completely disappearing without any trace of their passing, but as communications are slow, we aren't able to easily confirm these rumors.  The Duke fears, and I must agree that the moathouse is a great spot to start looking for trouble as rebuilt it would provide a strong point for any forays into the area around Crydee, and as it was once a bastion of evil it may hold secrets that were not discovered when it was sacked.

Beorn meditates on the robe man's explanations for a short moment, then nods I see. Very well, you shall have one of my scales. Before you go, I'd like to ask for permission to visit your library or archive. I'd like to see what I can find useful about the keep in there, maybe even a map of sorts.

Mialgru gives up a scale as well.

Clever thinking Beorn, their library might hold some evidence to the surrounding countryside.

@Lord Blades
You are not able to determine what Lie Detection he is using.  You know that the keep was originally built by the first rulers of the Temple of Elemental Evil.  It was to be used as a base from which to invade Crydee before moving on to other locales along the coast, as well as in the Elvandar in the other direction.  When the first temple was thrown down, the moathouse was sacked and heavily damaged, but not completely destroyed, leaving behind a shell of its former self.
Pulling a strand of hair Jax moves towards the robed man looking at Beorn and then Mialgru as he moves.  Smiling and nodding once in approval he says, "I accept this task and am glad to see that I will not be working with idiots".  Handing over his hair he turns, moving back towards his seat.

Kalal breaks off a small piece of his beard and drops it into the robed man's hand wordlessly, being careful not to touch anyone while doing so, knowing that sometimes he injures people even when he's trying to be as gentle as possible. He's still surprised at the softness of most creatures' flesh sometimes...
