Character Portraits?
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:18:45 PM »
So, I know a lot of people don't use character portraits, but I've always tried to. In fact, I usually take the onus to draw a detailed groupshot of my party as I perceive it. I like to think that I am a competent artist, and I enjoy doing it.

So few people do it that most DMs I game with offer bonus XP to players willing to write a detailed backstory and draw a detailed picture!

So, do you use character portraits? What do you use? (surf the Internet? Draw it on the computer? Draw it by hand?)
Which character portrait is your favorite? Post it here! I want cool stories and cool art all around!

I don't know if the designers meant you to take Skill Focus for every feat.
Sounds a little OP.

The monk is clearly the best class, no need to optimize here. What you are doing is overkill.

It's like people who have no idea what a turn signal is. They ruin it for everyone else.
When another driver brandishes a holy symbol and begins glowing with divine light, seek cover or get spattered with zombie brains. I do not see what is so complicated about this.

I always search the internetGelbooru/DeviantArt when I need a character portrait. :)
I can't post the pic I like the most, because Gelbooru doesn't allow hotlinking (the pic won't show up for you). Here's the link to the Gelbooru site with the pic, I hope it isn't against the rules to link to "porn" sites, when there's no actual porn in the link (excluding the adds).
Unfortunately I didn't yet have the chance to use this pic, because I got banned from joining the game in which I wanted to use it (the DM was wrong on a RAW interpretation of rules and when I pointed it out, she got angry, insulted me for not knowing the rules (:rollseyes) and banned me).

Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

I usually do the same (use w/e I find on the web). I'd draw my characters' picture myself if I weren't so bad at drawing though. :(

Weren't Mithras created for the sole purpose of giving male FF11 players something to fap to without having to close the game?  ???

I had a mithra character... Dex bonus for Cha penalty was spectacular when your accuracy is based off of Dex.

I just retired a Dread Necromancer last week in a solo game that got to be 17th level. I drew a few pictures of her by hand. She was supposed to be a fairly bleak character, hence the emotionless facial expression. The other picture of her was heavily influenced by "the Symbol" from Cityscape:

Here's a heavy-set half-orc druid I ran for a while in a solo campaign under the same DM:

Well, I usually use portraits that I find on the webs, mostly because in most cases I first find interesting picture, and then it inspires me to do certain characters. And most of PBP games I play require players to have character image. At least once I saw player getting extra points because of how cool GM thought his picture is. I try to use only original-characters portraits, as in, not characters from games or movies or anime or whatever. Mostly because I want to think about my character while looking at the portrait, not about Sasuke\Beatrice\whatever.
One of my GMs will look badly at you for playing with picture of non-original character. Also, some people in my circles tend to HATE anime pictures and won't allow them, and only heroes with real photos are allowed. Which makes games looks like hollywood movie ;P.
One of my friends spends a lot of time drawing her characters by hand, and well, everytime I have occasion of playing with her, I trick her into drawing the wole team, which results in cute pics.
Of people I know, only my gf dislikes using pictures, as it shackles imagination, which I think may have some truth in it. I remember that describing one of my characters from zero, without any picture to look at was super fun and helped flesh her out, giving me ideas. So I may try it, also because It will help improve my descriptions. :p

With my player's only one of them takes the time to do a portrait, as the rest of us suffer from an extreme lack of that artistic ability  :bigeye That said though, half my player's either go with generic character descriptions: "I'm the guy in the shadowy corner of the tavern. I have black eyes and black shaggy hair. My full plate never leaves my body. I have a dark cloak. My greatsword is always nearby." Those guys fill the nice pretty cookie cutter role of character image, while the rest of them go all out with character description that I wish could be rendered by a talented artist: "Standing before you is a radiant image of good. The being stands around 6 feet tall, with shoulder length hair the color of summer wheat. Your eyes are immediately drawn to his face which is dominated by a tattoo of the sun. Beyond the ink you see an eye the color of a fire opal staring down your soul. The other eye's gaze is even more arresting, as it is slit like the eye of the mighty golden dragons, with an accompanying scar following. As you continue your study of this strange creature you find yourself unable to look away from the glowing sigils on his arms, deeper study (and a knowledge(religion) check) reveals them to be the holy scripture and seven sacred ordinances of the Church of Pelor..." And so on  :D That was my character for the last campaign... maybe had a bit too much fun  :lmao
I'm delirious from lack of sleep, but am sustained by the power of the Gatling Gun!

I find I have a lot more fun running my PCs if I put a good backstory into them. The one I just retired had a three paged typed story. The ones I hate the most are the ones that I created quickly, with no thought into backstory. Also, they tend to be neutral alignment, but that may be a coincidence. The two that jump out are a neutral fighter I made for a 2E game that was extremely lifeless, and a conjurer for a 3.5 game that was awesome on the battle map, but bland outside of it.

Well, the more important part is really personality and style. History varies by group as to usefulness, and generally its more useful to have a small number of persons, events and places rather than the illustrated biography.

Oh he was amazing. I put lots of emphasis into background and character development with him since I wasn't going to be combat based and all that (trying to get other players in my group to stop being in the monk is awesome mold), but of course he ended up kicking the shit out of everything... Yeah. I suppose backstory and personality are two different things and I was using them interchangeably. When I write up a detailed backstory, it tends to include personality stuff in there as well, and that's what tends to make the PC interesting.
