What Games to review
« on: May 13, 2008, 02:42:35 AM »
We have talked about many different games on the podcast.  What games would you like reviewed?

We plan on Definitely reviewing the following games:

Savage Worlds
Burning Wheel
Essoterrorists
Serenity

What else would you like to hear?  Or what would you like to hear first?

Haven't you already "reviewed" Serenity??? :eh
Visit my Message Boards (they're strangely familiar) and my Blog...

If you look at the entire history of the RPG industry, you'll see the same, long, sad story: a mountain of conventional wisdom, usually backed by selective listening, that leads to a long chain of failed games and bad ideas. - Mike Mearls

I want to do the Serenity Review, with some comments from Josh to present another side, but to have actual concrete, objective review not just a "it sucks".

I have quite a bit to say about this classic game.  But until then check out "20 Weeks of Hell" http://twentyweeksofhell.podbean.com/

"It sucks" is objective but unclear.  What I mean to say is that the quality of the game is low enough that one can consider it to be without merit.  The asymptote to zero.

What is good about the game?  Margret Weiss and Jamie Chambers have an adequate grasp of grammar and syntax.

This book makes me ashamed as a gamer that browncoats see this and think it represents gaming.  The game is a hunk of crap that I would not waste a thought on, except for the fact that it is Serenity and I really like Serenity.  This book makes me ashamed as a browncoat that someone would trash such an awesome movie.

Er, what? What makes you think that Browncoats think this is definitive gaming as Firefly is to definitive Sci-Fi? Do you not think that TV viewers understand 'cashing in'?
Do you beleive that Firefly is (the whole of) TV?

I think Josh is speaking from experience in that we are both members of the New England Browncoats of which there are close to 500 members, monthly meetings, group vacations, the whole bit.  When Serenity RPG came out, many used it to game for the very first time.  There is a small group of gamers in the group, but many more played Serenity and now equate that with what an RPG is.

But, regardless, I'm gathering notes to prepare a detailed review.

Shock - I believe it's one of those pass the stick types
The "Something" of the Century game you have mentioned several times.

The new World of Darkness ruleset. A proper review as opposed to "It sucks"

The new ed of Cyberpunk. Believe it is called "CYBERPUNK V3"

Spirit of the Century, we can manage that as well.

These will probably be far on down the list.  I would rather review games that have some amount of merit for three reasons.  1) I would rather excite people than talk them out of something.  2) They are Tedious reads.  3) It is hard to prove a negative.  It is simple to demonstrate how a game is awesome, not the reverse.  WoD would have never lasted if it was easy to show it sucks.  What you end up doing is trying to show what other games do better and trying to show how Vampire fails to mechanically support its professed genre.

Poor sad Cyberpunk.  It is the little system that thought it could, but hasn't yet.

Some Cool Quotes:  [spoiler]
Quote from: unknown
Non-PC activities like out of combat healing should be left to wands and NPCs. It's not fun to play a walking wand of CLW. Likewise, being a combat wall is not a viable PC role. A Wall of Force could do that.

-Sort of, but you left out the important note that a Wall of Force does it better.

Quote from: Runestar / skydragonknight
The most powerful character is the one that you actually get to play.

Quote from: Operation Shoestring
I often have to remind people not to underrate divination.  The ability to effectively metagame without actually metagaming beats the ability to set things on fire more times than not.

I'd be interested in hearing about Savage Worlds. I haven't played it, but am curious about it as I've heard a few good things about it.

No, but Roleplaying Systems are not well reviewed around the internet.

Board games and Card Games are extremely well reviewed, so we are unlikely to review them anytime soon.  But we may do other things with them.

As for supplements to RPGs, I think once we get the Systems reviewed we will start looking into them.
