What this means is that short of recalling every console they ever sold and/or using rootkits (which have supposedly been deemed illegal, plus it's highly likely it wouldn't work anyways), Sony cannot prevent anyone from playing newer games via firmware updates. In the past, whenever a new method came up to run the latest games, Sony would release an update to keep jailbroken consoles further away and to keep them from playing other games released from that point onwards.
There's actually a list of games such as Catherine, PES2012 (
), Dark Souls and White Knight Chronicles 2 that won't run on jailbroken PS3s thanks to the firmware barrier. Which is expected to change during the next month at the latest.
I'm currently hoping some developer releases a software-based dual-boot method. I own both backups and original games, but my PS3 is jailbroken and thus cannot play the originals online. (Not that I miss online much, but hey.)
