You could take an StP Erudite as your apprentice, then have him mind switch into your sword.

Beware, I am a mighty warrior, I have this sword that can do everything.
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.

Well, to hit a wielded weapon, there's the opposed attack roll, which a Wizard is highly unlikely to make compared to a martial character.  That automatically drops the chance of Disintegration to almost nill.  Add in the Fort save allowed for being attended/magical, and the immunity to damage (which is what a successful save leaves you with), you're talking a rediculously small chance to be worried about the weapon being destroyed.

Where can I find the rule on that opposed attack roll? Not that I want to argued against it, but I can't seem to find it. :/
Sunder rules, since that is the only place where it states the diffuclty of hitting an attended object (pretty much every other spell that affects objects doesn't require an attack roll)
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

If I do end up making my sword have class levels, would it maintain it's hardness?  I assume it's normal object HP would be replaced by the HP it would get from it's class.

It'd keep its hardness, and if I were DM I'd say it'd keep its original hp, or the hp from all of its class levels, whichever is higher.

That's what I thought at first, though I kind of think of this as "somewhat" weird but, all in all, a logical ruling. Anyway, thanks.

Well, you can't sunder using a ranged attack generally, but you CAN use Disintegrate to destroy attended (and therefore wielded) items.

So I suppose using Sunder rules would be the most logical place to start, though it's technically not RAW. Not sure how it would work, otherwise.

Just find a way to get Ray Deflection or something similar. If you give your sword Master of Many Forms levels, it can become immune altogether...

What would be the easiest way of jacking up my swords Wis?  I can think of giving it a +5 inherent bonus, but can it use magic items?

Something to bear in mind about how spells targeting objects work:

Quote
(object)
The spell can be cast on objects, which receive saving throws only if they are magical or if they are attended (held, worn, grasped, or the like) by a creature resisting the spell, in which case

Don't neglect the "unless its own bonus is greater" part. Since magic items basically have all good saves, that actually might be the case if you can boost them somehow. Can a magic item wear a Cloak of Resistance? Is it a valid target for a Superior Resistance spell? (Aren't intelligent items specifically called out as constructs somewhere?)

They're specifically called out as creatures in the MM (albeit indirectly, the MM states that anything with a Wisdom score is a creature and also has a Cha score, then says something similar for Cha) and the DMG, but they're never officially given a type.  Construct makes the most sense.

The SRD specifically says "treat them as constructs".
Quote
Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs. Intelligent items often have the ability to illuminate their surroundings at will (as magic weapons do); many cannot see otherwise.

So I think they could certainly benefit from spells that can target constructs (like Superior Resistance, etc).

If this post's info is correct, Pure Ore (Dragon 347) and Oerthblood (Dragon 351) might be things you want to add to your items (they add to instead of replacing materials).

Isn't there an item which makes you immune to specific spells? Have your sword wear one keyed to disintegrate.

Now we need protection from rods of negation and spheres of annihilation. The latter could be handled with the talisman of the sphere (more or less), but the rod...? Not so sure about that one.

Either way, make sure you have a backup weapon, just in case.

Could you have your sword be intelligent and give it Disintegrate as a spell it can cast? Ready counterspelling against mages.

[edit] Also, be dvati, become undead, then have one body Haunt Shift it. Good times.
