Need some BBeG build inspiration.
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:44:54 PM »
Ok, I need three BBeGs for an arena-style game.

They'll be facing single PC opponents, those opponents may use any build or tactics, but I've structured awards in the arena to (attempt to) favor melee specialists.

I need something to be a serious challenge (i.e. very difficult without being impossible)(meaning a well built PC can win without needing three crits in a row or resorting to some sort of secret weakness) at level 5, something for level 10, level 15, and level 20.

I probably should put the level 5 together first.

I think for level 5 some sort of really nasty brute type might be good. Perhaps a grappling specialist. Level 10 would be something that capitilizes on mobility, like a swift-hunter type build. Level 15 should be a serious arcanist. For level 20 I think I'll just plop down an outright dragon.

So, I think I'll keep level 5 fairly simple. Perhaps a gestalt fighter 5 (dungeoncrasher)/unarmed swordsage. Pick a race with a nice, beefy strength score and go to town. Any ideas for race? We're already seeing dragonlance minotaurs and water orcs.

Just some concepts to toss at you. The cockroach-a tough, self healing, but not too damaging warrior. I like using a dwarven crusader for this. Glass cannon-almost the exact opposite of the roach this guy is all offense but can likely be taken down in very few hits. Spell caster's work well for this but so would a rogue or charger. Head case- Uses illusions and charms to keep their opponent from successfully attacking them. Wizard or Beguiler are good choices here. The Hulk- a fun little concept I saw done before that involved getting as many different kinds of rages as possible. Barbarian, a class from OA, and frenzied berzerker for sure were in it.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

An air mephit with flyby attack and levels in crusader or warblade could work for the mobility one.

Take a look at my guide for DMs to design exotic ecounters, specially the solo bosses section.
I've never seen that guide... I like it, it'll work nicely.
