(RAW) Armored mage interpretation
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:23:58 PM »
So, I was looking at the rules for nonproficiency with shields, and got to thinking about equipping a beguiler with one. Looking at the Armored Mage ability, it states:

"A beguiler's limited focus and specailized training, however, allow you to avoid any chance of arcane spell failure as long as you restrict yourself to light armor"

Do you think, RAW, not RAI, that this allows a Beguiler in light armor to avoid ASF chance from shields?

If it says 'armor' then it means 'armor'. 'Armor' doesn't include 'shields'.

However, you can get a shield with 0 ACP, and it's not at all broken to allow casters to wear whatever armor they like without penalty, low tier or high.

Not entirely true. You cannot, for instance, wear heavy armor over light armor. You must "restrict yourself to light armor." For that matter, one could even build a reasonable argument that using a shield is not "restrict[ing] [one]self to light armor," and the use of a shield would therefore not only apply the ASF from the shield, but would also negate the Armored Mage ability and thus reinstate the light armor ASF.

It would have, of course, been so much simpler if they had just said that you could ignore ASF from light armor and left it at that. Trying to wear multiple armors wouldn't help, shields wouldn't help, and so on.

Yes, looking at the RAW interpretation, it seems that wearing a 20% ASF Chain Shirt and a 0% ASF Githcraft Buckler with a Beguiler would actually net you 20% ASF.

That's one interpretation of the RAW. If that were the case though, chances might be you can't have an amulet of natural armor... or can't wear underwear, or whatever. It says to restrict yourself to light armor. It doesn't say what else might be allowed, only light armor.

The other interpretation is the one mentioned by the OP. Which puts emphasis on the "light" part of the sentence, thus giving the whole sentence the meaning of "armor is restricted to light armor". It gives blanket ASF absolution for everything else.

Of course, once we apply common sense... the ability shouldn't boost something that the class doesn't have proficiency with. And of course it shouldn't prohibit you from wearing underwear...

So, like... a phoenix?
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

Depends on the incarnation. Buffed with the entire life energy of the Phoenix force she was capable of rearranging all the particles of an entire galaxy. Jean Grey, regardless of the incarnation, has never approached that power level with her telepathic abilities, but I doubt such a power level would be to the liking of any DM...

@Tshern:
Where my regular DM's are concerned, as soon as I mention "based on ideas I got from the Brilliant Gameologists Min/Max-Board", nothing is to their liking :(

@ Topic:
RAW it doesn't say anything about carrying a shield. Just "Light Armor", which means anything up to and including a Mithral Breastplate.
IMHO it is safe to assume you can use a shield.
As for prof: Mithral Shields(Buckler, Light, Heavy) tend to have neither ACP, nor ASF.  The Gauntlet Shield from RoS strikes me as useful, since it keeps your off-hand free for somatic or material components, while you wield a weapon.
