I was gonna post a simple LA guideline, but my head is swimming with Visions of Sugar-Pixie-Plums.

Then take some templates with obscene LAs, take the penalties, then find another template (like petitioner) that takes all your LA away?

Might give you negative LA if things stack properly.

Doesn't work for templates, just races.

:twitch  :o ... more head swimming.

Well if we're getting the HD, forest land wyrm(draconomicon?) Has 15 HD and only +3LA
when combined with ToB or other HD related classes... = Win!

Or
factotum1 black ethergaunt or sharn

But if you look at the paragraph before in players guide to faerun(pg 190ish,), it explains that the next two sections are for races with 1 HD and a higher LA  :(
:( ... but still quite the dish.

What about the Savage Species Monster classes?
Maybe just take the -1 list of stuff, instead of the LA+1 levels. Hello.

I have no idea why warforged scouts take a penalty to Wisdom. I mean, they're scouts! They track and Spot and Listen!

Nor do I know why anyone would want to play one. They suck.  :(

They could at least given them a 30 foot movement speed or had their favorite class be, I don't know, Scout or something...  Rogue doesn't even make sense (Unless warforged were regularly trained in theives guilds).

Every DM who allows Shining South Beguiler as a LA +0 player race should immediately step down from the DMing chair and, as long as we're about it, off the next cliff. Constant True Seeing! For LA+0! Not to mention some other nice bonuses including a third 'hand'.

Essense of the Dragon (RotD, Sor 2) turns the target into a Dragon for a while.
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

Hmm, I could have sworn the beguiler's LA was explicitly listed as being for familiars only.

It is +0 (cohort) whatever that is worth.

But really constant True Sight at low levels is going to be less of an issue than constant at higher levels.  I may be trying to play one in an upcoming game depending on the party make up.  But I have already let my DM know that I have no problem downgrading or trading out the True Sight.  He actually wasn't worried about the True Sight.  Flavorwise they have the True Sight to protect from their ethereal natural predators but See Invis could work well for that too or even some new custom ability.  Of course, take out the fluff and then take out the True Sight works fine too.

But, that is all rather off topic.  Apologies :)

Being a familiar has nothing to do with LAs or ECLs.

Except that the listed LA is +0 (cohort) and the descriptive text talks about taking it as a familiar and nothing about as a player race, unlike all of the other explicitly playable races in that section.

The +0 (cohort) only says that it is recommended as a cohort vs pc race.

That has NOTHING to do with it being allowed as a familiar or not.

The part that applies to the the familiar part is that is says it can be a familiar for a 7th level wizard or whatever, besides the monster stats in general.

Rather, the (cohort) tag is for races that are only suitable as cohorts.

I remember reading somewhere it said it was recommended, but might be available for pcs.

Where I read it, no idea ;)
