Doll Judgement

"Of course I'm happy living only surrounded by dolls. They never complain of anything!"-Alice Margatroid, Doll Judgement Master

History

Legend says the first Doll Judgement user was a merchant that sold her soul in hell to learn magic and eventualy settled in a mysterious forest after her dark master was defeated by a powerfull priestess and she had no interest in world-conquest plans. Since she had no more need for money or mortal allies, she took doll crafting as a hobby on her breaks from studying the arcane mysteries, an art she had first learned when she was still mortal. Altough she could easily craft any dolls she wanted with magic instantly, there was a certain satisfaction doing it by hand trough mundane means. It created a special connection.

After a century of this lifestyle, the magician had learned how to channel her spirit trough her dolls. They weren't exactly independent constructs and ultimely were manifestations of her own will, and thus they would answer instantly to her commands. She took particular pleasure in fighting with this unique skill the few creatures that challenged her and many stories were written and forgoten about her.

The magician never took disciples, but did abandon several of her dolls for unknown reasons, that ended up on the hands of others. Altough not all of the new doll owners had magic powers, they each were capable of stablishing a connection with the dolls and learn the Doll Judgement discipline.

Now Doll Judgement users can be found a little everywhere. Usually solitary creatures, many would question their sanity for their choice of weapon, but a Doll Judgement user rarely cares about what others think of her anyway. Their dolls are all the companionship they really need, and they don't give them few worries. They give them none.

Any creature tha hast a level of a ToB class may swap one of his availables disciplines for this one.

Key skill:Craft(doll). Doll Judgement maneuvers only work with hand-crafted dolls (no magic or magicitems involved on their creation), and thus any user of this discipline must know how to supply herself. Creating something with your own hands imbues it with a special spirit that cannot be replicated by any magic. Asking others for help on the creation process also ruins the doll for the purpose of this discipline.

New Equipment: Doll
Dolls are constructs two size category smaller than the creator with 1 HP and no natural armor or hardness and a special filling for a total cost 1 silver. The filling explodes when activated in the right way by a small magic trigger. This trigger is unique to each Doll crafter, so only her may make them explode.

For the purpose of Doll Judgement, dolls must be hand-crafted whitout any magic aid, be it items, spells, Su abilities, psionics and anything besides the user's own hands, mundane tools and self dedication.

They have no physical stats of their own, but Doll judgement maneuvers and stances may grant them so.

SPECIAL: If you know a Doll Judgement Strike but not a Stance from this school, you may still use the maneuvers from this school by holding the dolls directly with your hands or with real strings, in which case they count as one-handed weapons.  Each such doll may have  an attached one-handed weapon one size category smaller that the normal you could carry, and you may attack with the doll's weapon as if you were wielding it yourself, taking no penalties for it being smaller than you (but still taking any normal penalties for dual-wielding if you use two dolls). Alternatively you may use a single bigger doll with a two-handed weapon one size category smaller that you can carry, which takes both your arms to control. If you're in a doll judgement stance, you may not use this option.

New Feats:

Rainbow Puppeteer
Requisites: Must be either a sorceror or non-specialized wizard
Benefit: You may learn Doll Judgement maneuvers and stances as a wizard learns new spells of an equivalent level using martial scripts as scrolls (in the case of a sorceror you create special token-dolls that grant you the maneuvers known). You may use your CL instead of your Initiator level for Doll Judgment maneuvers and stances and the special doll feat. To use this maneuvers and stances you must prepare them in empty spell slots of an apropriate spell level, and they can only be recovered as spells are, not as maneuvers.
Special Doll[Doll Judgement, Reserve]
Pre-requisites: Must know at least one Doll Judgement Stance.
Benefit:By spending 100 GP worth of materials and 24 hours of work you craft a doll one size category smaller than yourself of exceptional quality. You can control it trough invisible indestructible intangible strings created by your devotion to this doll, which can extend up to 10 feet per Iniator Level. You cannot have more than one special doll.

While controled it has HP equal to half of your max HP, hardness and natural armor each equal to the number of ranks you have in Craft(Doll) and all ability scores (except Con which it doesn't have being a construct) equal to your own, and a base speed of 30 feet. Its saves, Bab, proficiencies and skills are also equal to your own. It also gains a feat at 1st level and for every 3 other levels you have. The special doll cannot however get Doll Judgment stances or any feats that would grant it more creatures like Wild Cohort.

The special doll gets a fullround worth of actions at your iniative just like if it was a familiar or animal companion. You can see and hear trough it as well, and even make the special doll speak. It is fully able to perform fine manipulation and wield weapons.

You cannot enter a Doll Judgment Stance while controling your Special Doll as it demands all your pupeteering focus. You may still combine your special Doll with Doll Judgement maneuvers and stances from other schools. If the special doll is reduced to 0 HP or sacrificed, you may repair it with 50 GP worth of materials and 1 hour of work. If you cannot recover its remains, you may craft a new one with another 24 hours of work and 100 GP worth of materials. If it's just damaged, you can repair it with any maneuver that allows you to recover destroyed normal dolls, at the rate of 1d6 HP for every doll you would otherwise recover.

The special Doll benefits from any benefical spells cast on you, as well as martial stances and boosts you use as long as it is whitin your control range.

Reserve: Your doll gets stronger depending on the highest level transmutation spell you have available to cast.
2nd-Special doll weapons count as magic for bypassing DR and hiting incorporeal creatures.
3rd-Special doll can fly at her base speed with good maneuverability.
4th-Special doll gains +1 competence bonus to all attack and damage rolls.
5th-Special doll gains +2 competence bonus to all attack and damage rolls.
6th-Special doll gains +3 competence bonus to all attack and damage rolls.
8th-Special doll gains +4 competence bonus to all attack and damage rolls.
9th-Special doll gains +5 competence bonus to all attack and damage rolls.
The special doll also gains the lower level effects as long as you have a transmutation spell of higher level. So for example if you had a 9th level spell available, the special doll would gain all bonus from 2nd to 9th.

Puppeteer Theater
Doll Judgement (Stance)

Initiation Action: Fullround action
Range: -
Target: you.
Duration:stance
Save: none

When initiating this stance, you pull up to two dolls per Iniator Level from inside your clothes (or nearby surroundings if you had prepared them beforehand) and position them anywhere in a radius of 10 feet per Initiator level. The dolls sustain themselves in mid air by invisible indestructible intangible strings created by this stance. They have a Str and Dex score equal to your own. Each doll can also be equiped with one weapon you're proficient with, one size category smaller than yourself (the doll has no trouble holding the relatively oversized implement), but you must acquire such items beforehand. You can use craft(doll) to make said weapons look fitting to your Doll's theme. If for some reason a doll leaves the range of this stance, you lose control of it at the end of the round. Dolls automatically move with you when you move, causing attacks of oportunity as normal creatures.

Squares where one of your dolls is positioned count as hard terrain against oponents, and they provide flanking bonus against enemies they threaten if they're equiped with a melee weapon. They cannot however perform attacks of oportunity nor otherwise act by themselves.

The dolls save as you do and have all construct immunities. You cannot put more than one doll in each 5-feet square.

You can "channel" any of your actions trough a doll, like initiating a maneuver or casting a spell using one of your Dolls as the point of origin. You can also see trough your doll's eyes. Always use your own stats for this.

When you end this stance, your dolls are either retrieved inside your clothes or you can drop them in a single square tidily organized (or chaotically piled up, whatever you prefer).

Level: Crusader 9, Swordsage 9, Warblade 9
Initiation Action: Fullround action
Range: 5 feet per Initiator level radius centered on you
Target: any enemies inside the radius
Duration: 1d6 rounds
Save: Will DC 19+Dex mod

Whitout noticing it one of your crafted dolls is...Diferent. Its hair grows. Tears drop from its eyes. You cannot stop feeling like its alive, animated by some mysterious power. Dangerous power. When using this maneuver you unseal this Doll from its container, upon wich it floats trough the air. The enviroment around it quickly changes into a dazzling myriad of colors and the doll releases a storm of attacks from floating weapons to energy projectiles to impossible creatures apearing to strike and then disapearing in the next moment. You feel like this will lead to no good if let out of control and quickly seal the doll again, ending the effect.

Make a Craft(Doll) check. Every oponent inside the area takes damage equal to four time the check result, and they're dazed for 1d6 rounds and blinded for 1d6 rounds afterwards. If the suceed on a Will save, they take only half damage, but they're confused for 1 round anyway as they try to figure out just what hapened. This affects even creatures immune to confusion, as long as they have some kind of senses. Allies are miracously spared.

Heh, genius. :p I meant to do something like this, but based on Mu-12's Steingunner drones.

Shouldn't Futuristic Puppet be a stance? Boosts are either instantaneous or last for 1 round. And what, no Goliath Doll? ;)

Changed Futuristic Puppet for 1 round duration since the game effect only lasts 7 sec, wich is one round anyway.

Never had heard of Goliath Doll untill I googled it. Then I was :love

However I couldn't decide wich level it should be, so I ended up making two maneuvers at levels 6 and 8 and one 9th level stance to represent the diferent stages of "development". :p

Two clarity questions:

A lot of the maneuvers say that a doll deals an amount of damage with an explosion or something similar.  However, the damage type is not specified.  Is it intended to be untyped, or is this an oversight?

You should also specify what happens to dolls on the field when you leave a stance.  Also, are dolls capable of moving on their own once they've been placed, or do they simply remain at the same point with reference to you?  I know that some strikes let them make charges, but can you reposition the dolls in other ways?

Yes the damage is suposed to be untyped.

Good point on what happens on dolls when you leave the stance. Stated that you can put them back inside your clothes or place them in a single 5-feet square organized or in a mess, whatever you prefer.

Some maneuvers were made specifically for allowing dolls to move whitout you. Dolls in Sea, Doll Placement and Traditional Elegant Dolls out of the top of my head. Otherwise you'll have to spend your own move action if you want to make one doll move.

EDIT: Eerily Luminous Dolls lets your dolls move on their own. Lunatic Goliath Doll can fully act on her own.

Now I want to build a character who has Lunatic Goliath Doll and Army of One, to get 3 Colossal Dolls running around, murderfying people.

I will call him Legion of the Threefold Doll!
Fighter: "I can kill a guy in one turn."
Cleric: "I can kill a guy in half a turn."
Wizard: "I can kill a guy before my turn."
Bard: "I can get three idiots to kill guys for me."

On a strange note, would anyone be put out if we had a post about people or events we can spare a thought for, or if its within their creed, a prayer for? Just a random thought, but ... hells I wouldn't have known about either Archangels daughter or Saeomons niece if I didn't happen to be on these threads.
Sounds fine to me.
probably over on "Off-topic".
might want to put a little disclaimer in the first post.

This is the Min/Max board. We should be able to figure out a way to optimize the POWER OF PRAYER(TM) that doesn't involve "Pazuzu, Pazuzu, Pazuzu".

This is awesome.

Also, is it correct to say that you can only have 1 stance, so only 1 type of doll (normally)?  And if you can have dual stances, then 2 types of dolls at once ...

Best,
David

P.S.  This is awesome.

That would be correct. Altough I don't remember any non-homebrew way of gaining dual stances besides warblade capstone.

Also notice Doll Judgement stances take a fullround action to initiate instead of the usual swift so it's not too easy to replace and reposition all your dolls at once.

First off a preemptive apology, I do not mean to be mean, but as I have said before I am not overly fond of this style, from concept to execution. :(

Some general comments; I am not overly fond of this style it seems like it will be a nightmare to handle in combat, not just for the DM and player but also for the other players. :mad Also this style has too many perfect and near perfect defenses, this is meant for DnD, not Exalted and this reminds me more of a high end Celestial Martial art, or a low end Sidereal one.
Too much action abuse. Also many of the strikes are only limited by the number of dolls, it would be better if they have another limiter because it makes the low end stances comparatively more powerful than the later ones.
The power-level is generally too high. A lot of it comes from the action abuse and near perfect defenses, but in terms of offense this style does leave all others in the dust too, it's just not as noticeable because the other things (especially the action abuse) overshadow it.

One of the things I do like is that most of the primary strengths of the style do seem to be limited by initiator level.

I'm not a fan of untyped damage, if you feel you must give several damage options as psionic powers tend to do.

I feel there is too much overlap between Artfull Sacrifice and Doll Veredict. Giving them different damage types should resolve this.

Hmm yes I supose I coud include some earlier support for fighting with a single doll. Will think about that, thanks for the sugestion!

Some general comments; I am not overly fond of this style it seems like it will be a nightmare to handle in combat, not just for the DM and player but also for the other players. :mad
Not more work that your typical druid with AC and spamming Summon Nature's ally if you ask me. Do notice I made the dolls stats pretty simple precisely to avoid too much complication.

Also this style has too many perfect and near perfect defenses, this is meant for DnD, not Exalted and this reminds me more of a high end Celestial Martial art, or a low end Sidereal one.
It has four defensive maneuvers, Guardian Doll, Hanged Immortal Doll, Dolls of the Round Table and Lunatic Goliath Doll. The first one demands a roll, the second only works to protect your own doll unless combined with another maneuver, the third sacrifices most of your dolls, the third is 9th level and demands you to stay near your doll, making you both more vulnerable to area effects.

And heck, D&D has plenty of nasty offensive effects. There needs to be some good defensive effects to balance it out.

Too much action abuse. Also many of the strikes are only limited by the number of dolls, it would be better if they have another limiter because it makes the low end stances comparatively more powerful than the later ones.
Only at first glance, because altough the first stance does gives a lot more dolls, they're also a lot more fragile, and thus kinda worthless at higher levels when lots of enemies can easily deal area damage whitout even expending actions. Also the higher level stances allow your smaller number of dolls to take more actions in the forms of Aoos and eventually their own actions.

The power-level is generally too high. A lot of it comes from the action abuse and near perfect defenses, but in terms of offense this style does leave all others in the dust too, it's just not as noticeable because the other things (especially the action abuse) overshadow it.
But again the action abuse  is dependant on the fragility of the dolls

One of the things I do like is that most of the primary strengths of the style do seem to be limited by initiator level.

I'm not a fan of untyped damage, if you feel you must give several damage options as psionic powers tend to do.
That wouldn't make much sense here. I'm not making an elemental master class. I'm making a puppet master whose dolls explode in their oponent's face with colourfull explosions.

I feel there is too much overlap between Artfull Sacrifice and Doll Veredict. Giving them different damage types should resolve this.
One sacrifices a doll for extra damage, the other deals less damage but keeps the doll. I believe that's diference enough.

Quote

Thanks for pointing out the typo. Tiny creatures with weapons still have reach 5 feet. If you're small sized, it's advised to equip your dolls with reach weapons. If you're tiny sized, then it's advised to look for other school.

Quote

Perhaps you missed the memo that fireball isn't that hot?

Well it already says "creatures inside the area", I believe that should be clear enough.

Well better than monk is a good sign if you ask me. :p

Quote

By all means sugest a cleaned up version.

We already went trough this on Ancient Temple.

Clarified duration, changed to enanchment bonus.

Quote
Guardian Doll
A Near perfect defense, if it doesn't have a save or attack roll I'm not sure it should be stopped like that, but I suppose something must stop an Irresistible Phantasmal Killer. Still I question it's presence in DnD.
Then question the presence of so many deadly offensive tricks and the possibility of throwing multiples of them per turn.

Quote
High-Explosive Pawn
fireball plus. You might want to tone down the entire line of manuvers a bit.
Again, the basic evocation spells aren't really much of a measuring point in 3.5.

Quote
Hanged Immortal Doll
Do I really list my objections to a better than prefect defense?
Well it's a perfect defense for your dolls, not yourself, unless you burn two of your attacks to stop a single one from the enemy.

Quote
Scarlet Haired Dolls
Having them practically invulnerable to attack is not the answer. Give them DR, or even hardness, but this must hit them twice mechanic is too open to abuse.
What kind of abuse exactly? Also there's way too many ways to overcome/overload DR/hardness unless I make it obscenely high, in which case then then it indeed becomes abuseable. I'm just trying to make the class don't automatically fail when somebody throws a widened firebal at you.

Boosted up Artful Sacrifice a little by giving it Aoe potential.

Also added a new feat for those puppeteers that want to focus on a single doll.

Special Doll
Requisites: Must know at least one Doll Judgement Stance.

While controled it has HP equal to half of your max HP, hardness and natural armor each equal to the number of ranks you have in Craft(Doll) and all ability scores (except Con which it doesn't have being a construct) equal to your own.
