Maximize skill points
« on: April 15, 2011, 11:50:15 AM »
Hello,
with the apprentice feat p.176 from Dungeon Master's Guide II, does the character obtain 2 skill points at each level ?

Is it possible for an human to take the apprentice feat two times at level 1 ?

I wish to make a character with a lot of skill points at each level and having access to each skill (as if all the skills were a class skill).

Thanks for your future answer.

  • Factotums (Dungeonscape) get all skills as class skills and 6 skill points per level.
  • Bards with the bardic knack alternate class feature (PHBII, replaces bardic knowledge) may use 1/2 their bard level in place of skill ranks.
  • Humans and many of their variants get +1 skill point per level.
  • The exalted feat Nymph's Kiss (Book of Exalted Deeds) grants +1 skill point per level.
  • The feat Primary Contact (Cityscape, requires the feat Favored) grants +1 rank in a skill, even above normal max ranks.
  • The feat Jack of All Trades (Complete Adventurer) treats you as having half a rank in all skills, thus allowing you to use trained-only skills.

The text for Apprenticeship (DMGII, 175) states you get the two extra skill points upon becoming an apprentice.  It's only a one-time bonus, not per level.  Also, the Apprentice feat does not have the entry "Special: This feat can be taken more than once..." and therefore cannot be taken more than once.

The Exemplar PrC (Complete Adventurer) also gets all class skills, with 8+Int/level skill points.

Able Learner (Races of Destiny) will let you buy cross-class skills at one skill point per rank, but it doesn't increase the max ranks in cross-class skills.

The feat Open Minded  (Expanded Psionics Handbook) grants five skill points once, and it may be selected multiple times.

There are several feats in Complete Scoundrel that each grant two bonus skill tricks; normally, a skill trick costs two skill points, and you can normally have only one per two levels and gain no more than one each level.

The Uncanny Trickster PrC (Complete Scoundrel) has 8+Int/level skill points and grants a bonus skill trick each level, and two of its three levels advance class features of another class.

The swordsage gets 6+Int Skills but starts with 6x that at level 1, instead of the normal 4x. I've yet to find errata.

There's a rogue ACF somewhere that increases their total skill points at first level..

Maybe because the errata was spliced into the Complete Mage's errata?

I'd recommend a Human Factotum with Nymphs Kiss (does this multiply if taken at level 1 too?) and Open Minded feats.
All Class skills: 6  + 1 Human + 1 NK  + Int which is your Primary stat per level

Or a Changeling Rogue with the substituion levels, for the 3 sub levels they get 10 + Int Skill points, including 1st level. Add in Nymph's Kiss and open minded for even more.

Are you starting Epic? Make a Celestial Attended Otherwordly [or any template for outsider type] Black Ethergaunt... 16 Outsider Hit Dices of 8+int with a +20 racial intelligence bonus...

Question: are the skill points gained via Open Minded multiplied at first level too?

I wouldn't think so since they aren't the class level provided skill points, otherwise it'll be my new favorite first level feat.

There's no difference between one skill point and another. All first level characters gain x4 skill points, which includes racial skills like humans and anything with racial HD.

If that's the case then the skill points from apprentice would multiply as well, granting you 8 from the feat in addition to the other benefits. I don't think that's what was intented.

However I think I found a new favorite skills build.

Human Rogue or Factotum - Open minded x2 at first level more if flaws are allowed.

A human swordsage with 2 Open Minded's gets 102 skill points (what with the unerrata'ed x6 and all).

Also, the changeling rogue ACF in Races of Eberron gains 10 skill points per ACF level, one of which is level 1.

With flaws, that's (10+5+5+5)x4 = 100, with some REALLY nice other abilities to go with.

(turning this into a generic skills-o-rama thread)

Item Familiar ... although I've no idea how it works.

Whatever that Cleric 2 spell that gives +20 to a skill check.
Some un-updated Psi 3.0 Psychoportation powers, are near this.

Custom Items of skill bonuses are dirt cheap for what they get.

if a character human takes 2 open mind feat, did the 5 skill points multiply by 4 at 1st level ?

IIRC, skill points are assigned, then feats.  If that's correct, then no.  Check the PHB to be sure though.

Open Minded grants skill points, which can then be spend on skills. That would seem to indicate that feats are assigned first.

On the other hand, you can take, say, Shocktrooper at level 5 if you get a feat then, after just meeting the prerequisite of Jump: 8 ranks.

Perhaps it applies in the most beneficial order?

A bard with the bardic knack ACF and the jack of all trades feat effectively has half his bard level + .5 ranks in every skill and can use them all.
