What do you spend your GP on?
« on: April 07, 2011, 04:07:50 AM »
I assume your characters get gold (GP) and are able to buy valuable things with it.  Where does this money usually go?

As I play casters most often, my money goes toward boosting these stats:

-DEX
-CON
-Primary casting stat
-Saves
-Number of spells known/per day (Scribing scrolls, Pearls of Power, Knowstones, psionic power research, etc.)

I also go for the occasional other item:
-
-Healing Belt
-Belt of Battle
-Wand of cheap healing (cure light wounds/lesser vigor)
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

+1 Mithral Chain Shirt, +1 Armor Spikes - thinking of switching over to Sentira
+x Stat Enhancer
Everlasting Rations
A single adamantine arrow
Heward's Handy Haversack
A pouch of flour
Sometimes Eggshell Grenades (infuse these with supplementary "Phantomdust")
Some form of Magical Melee Weapon
A silver dagger, and a cold iron dagger
A +1 buckler/darkwood large shield, +1 spike when applicable
Some form of Ranged weapon
Masterwork Tool(s) of XYZ
Prowess Ring(s) of ABC on occasion
Specialty Holy Symbol where useful
Life gives you lemons? Then you better fucking learn Citromancy.

Hookers.
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

I'm playing a Dread Necromancer in a solo game with a very high amount of wealth.  Her notable possessions are:

  • Handy Haversack
  • +6 Cloak of Cha
  • +6 Gloves of Dex
  • +4 Amulet of Con
  • +? Vest of Resistance (probably should upgrade this)
  • Ring of Invisibility
  • Hat of Disguise
  • Boots of Teleporation
  • Enveloping Pit
  • +1 Unholy Longbow with a Fire Energy Assault Crystal
  • +1 Mithirl Shirt of Displacement and Easy Travel
  • +1 weapons, back up silver and cold iron weapons, and armor for my big skeletons.

I think I'm forgetting a few others.  The bow and crystal were both found, and may sell at some point to get something more useful.  I almost never use the bow at this point in the game.  The armor and Handy Sack make it so my Str 8 weakling can function!  The Enveloping Pit is useful as hell for storing my large undead and bringing them with me.  This campaign world is seriously anti-undead, so I have to be careful.

I actually traded in a ring of Freedom of Movement for Boots of Teleportation.  This was a hard choice, but the boots can get me out of most situations that the ring could anyway.  If I get another 40K, I'll probably get another one, though.  Walking through Black Tentacles is awesome!

No caster of mine goes without his Initiative Stick. +1 Warning/+1 Eager Quarterstaff with a wand chamber (or two) and either two eternal wands of Nerveskitter, or just one regular one (they are cheap, anyway, who cares). We, of course, use the houserule that an Eternal Wand has the same activation time as a normal wand.

I may end up doing that with my light mace that I have Continual Flame on.

Doesn't matter what party role I take; if it doesn't clash with my character concept, I go for the psychoactive skin of proteus as early as is humanly (or non-humanly) possible.

Armor
Mithril Chain Shirt
Mithril Dastana
Mithril Chahar-aina

Weapons
+1 Gauntlet of Warning
+1 Gauntlet of Eagerness
Small Metaline Weapon

Survival
Belt of Battle
Boots of Sidestepping

Utility
Everlasting Rations
Refilling water skin
Item of 3/day Rope Trick
Glove of Storing x2
Bag of Holding
Bottle of Air

+6 AC from stackable light armor with no penalty is awsome.
Gauntlets are always considered worn & ready therefore Warning/Eagerness always up and hands still free to do other stuff.
Metaline = swiss army knife

Infinite Supply of Food
Infinite Supply of Water
Infinite Supply of Air
Portable Extradimensional space
Difficult to find bag of holding when its shrunk down in the palm of my hand (Glove of storing.)

I think the basics are covered. Weapon+Armor+Survivability
Light in the Darkness.
Darkness in the Light.
It is truly a neverending cycle of nightmares.

Hookers.

This is one reason I'm fond of a periapt of health or discount version.
I believe my current version is usable only by Chaotic characters with 5 ranks in Bluff.

...I often seem to get distracted in the middle of looking for useful items and get something to help my character get laid safely instead. Hat of Disguise, Periapt of Health, Cloak of Charisma, plenty of doses of Nararoot, death ward, anklet of translocation, protection from whatever, enchanted masterwork item of perform, so on.

Also enjoy massages and baths. Probably should not have purchased a massage from the bathhouse owner after informing her we were aware of her slave trading. Particularly as I happened to be a (dragonborn) warforged with adamantine plating.  ???

My party is very poor in my current campaign.

I have a couple of big ticket items that my bard has found(mithral +4bp, +3longsword, +4 cha cloak).  Other than that, I've spent what little cash I have crafting small upgrades with Craft Magic Arms: Blueshine and Everbright were among the first, since I don't want to lose what little stuff I have.

Mainly, we seem to end up spending lots of money on NPC's we've befriended.  For example when I knew I was going to be facing a more cunning Vrock than usual(he would go after non-combatants rather than charging straight in)... I blew ~1k gold equipping each of my followers with a flask of holy water... just so they wouldn't be defenseless.  We're also having an NPC reincarnated, because he was a nice guy, and a kickass Chef. :)

I always like custom or weird stuff:

Nightsticks
Beads of Karma
Ring of sustenance as a slotless item
Animated Feycrafted Glassteel Large Shield with spellblade:Greater dispel magic on the armored spikes
Reinforced Segmented Feycrafted Spellcasting Glassteel Chain Shirt (dragon #358)
Small collar if you are something really big or have a big pet (Arms and equipment guide)
Poison Rings from dragon 316 if allowed
Shiftweave
Arms of Nyr (Defenders of the Faith)
Ring of Theurgy (A must for spontaneous casters who want to barrow spells) (Complete Arcane)
Rune Circles: If you have a base, build magic item effects into a 5 foot circle really cheap.  Rune staffs are incredibly cheap as rune circles for utility spells you dont often need. (Races of Stone)
Gloves of storing with the lowest level bag of containment stored inside.

If I really want to mess with people: Horse Shoes of the Flame as slotless items (savage species).  Make yourself look like a nightmare for 21 hours with a UMD check emulating a horse as a race.  Nothing like a +2 Dex, +10 Int, +6 Cha as an unlisted bonus.

All of this stuff is constructed with True ore alloyed with Oerthblood metal if possible.  Equipment usually doubles as something else.  I have the properties of a nightstick, bead of karma, and a greater holy symbol built as a master worked flute on my current character.  Also as a caster, don't forget to build your focuses right into your equipment.  Why not have your Int boosting circlet also have the necessary focus for shapechange in it.

When I play a cost focused Artificer I often craft Clockwork Armor for the coolness factor since I don't really need to worry about money.

i'm fond of stacking common lower level boosts onto an item, such as making one ring cover a lot of various basic rings. with the updated common use boosts added to items rules, i'll go for odd and unique items, add a cheap common boost to them, and upgrade them as able later.

i've noticed that i have a distinct preference for items with permanent abilities, even if limited per day, rather than one shot or charged items. (though, if recharging items are allowed, that tends to mitigate my aversion.) that only applies to purchased / crafted items, not found items.

No adventurer is complete without at least 2 Tree Feather Tokens. Your DM always expects you only to have one, you see.
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.
