Nifty. Wonder how they actually give a valuation to hobby sites.

Hm, yeah, wonder how reliable and/or useful that is, but pretty cool I guess?

I'm thinking about putting up a couple more google ads so we can offset the hosting costs.  I want to put up a message though that this a not-for-profit venture and ads etc are just to help defray the costs.

Give in. Join the Dark Side. Or at least fix the light bulb. Leaving it on all the time caused it to burn out, sparking a Dark Side vs. Illuminated Side war in the kitchen.

But seriously, succumb to the temptation of free self-making money.

And, yes, I meant the BrilliantGameologists light bulb.

You could pool the money left over from upkeep costs and then use it to do something for the site when you have a) a goal and something to spend it on, and b) enough money to buy that goal/material object of value.

I have absolutely no issues about having tons and tons of ads on a site.  I know other people do... but it's just never bothered me.  I'd rather take a tenth of a second to scroll past several dozen ads and have Meg making money to reinvest rather than have her struggle against upkeep costs just to not have ads...   :(
Same here.  Just so long as the animation is kept to a minimum (I tend to browse with low speed a lot), I'm content with ads.

Aye, I'll agree with you there 4ngel.
-Civilization is like a herd of pigs. The herd brings many benefits, but no-one should wonder at all the sh*t.
-Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come around again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes.
-Question with boldness even the existence of God; because, if there is one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded faith.
-Warding, warning, breeding, keeping, making, healing, storm and shade. Striding, scribing, always guarding, all as dark an end they made!
-How do they rise up?

We're a LONG way from covering the costs-- at the rate the ads are going now, it would be about... 50 more months?  And that's just the costs so far.  Doesn't include upgrades/ replacements etc.  So I'm not worried about that.

I'm confused.  Are you losing money keeping BG up, or not?

I would assume so. It's very rare that a hobby site makes money for the hoster, unless they've got good merchandise sales.

What are the costs incurred with respects to maintaining a website such as this?

If you're doing all the admin work yourself: Software (the forum and webpage), hardware (server rack, upgrades), electricity to power everything, and the monthly internet connection fee. Also, if it's hosted at a service, they'll charge for it. There's also registering the domain name, but that's minimal. Depending on how much the services cost and upgrades, etc, it can turn out to be quite an expensive hobby.

First of all, remember that this site is first and foremost to support our podcast.  The costs with starting a podcast are significant.  We spent probably about $300 on equipment, $200 on promotional materials and then right now our hosting fees are at about $20/month.  There are a ton of other miscellaneous fees including buying a bunch of books we may not have bought otherwise to review, and the electricity and all of the other stuff listed above but that's secondary.

But none of us see it as "loosing money".  It's our hobby and you spend money on your hobbies.  Totally worth it.  If we could get ads and merchandise to cover the costs and then even to have a pool to do things like buy more books, go to more conventions, get better equipment, etc., that would be awesome.

As long as the ads you use use the same URL I don't care what you add.

AdBlocker ftw.  :P

Part of the point of ads though would be that folks would click them.
