Become an Illithid
« on: April 04, 2011, 09:32:39 AM »
Hello,
it's possible for a wizard to obtain an octupus as familiar, no ?

Is it possible to have a tadpole as familiar ?

What is the stats for a tadpole ?

Quote

I wish to become an illithid with a tadpole as familiar without lose the personality and the spirit.

Is it possible if the tadpole was a familiar ?

Or in addition, is the symbiotic creature template from Savage Species necessary ?

Or the magic item, the thought bottle from Complete Arcane prevent the lose of the personality and the spirit ?

Thanks for the future answer.

The only way to accomplish half of this is with PAO.  Illithid tadpoles are completely un-statted, so you can't have one as a familiar.

Houserule ... you could use the Baby Illithid
(whatever it's called) in CPsi. Just go with 1hd
and nerf it down to Familiar type abilities.
Gotta keep that Brain Eating ability.

Also in CPsi is an Illithid oriented PrC.
Lots of feats there, fit in too.
More of an Ardent build than anything.
So flavor = exactly what you want,
but you have quirks and have to wait for it.

Find ways to get a ton of feats (illithid bloodline) and take the Illithid Heritage feats all the way up. I know the flavor sucks, and you'll have to reconstruct Illithid Blast from scratch, but this should work for essentially becoming a mind-flayer.

And I'd see about using the puppeteer, as Tshern suggested. Or a reflavored octopus (mmm...kalamari).

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

I know it is not the same, but what about the dragon cohort feat.  There is the Mindstealing dragon in one of the dragon magazines that I think states out at 8HD +5 LA for the wyrmling.  If I every got a chance to play an illithid, I think I would go with this if possible since it works out to 2 less LA.  Especially since it states it is a dragon illithid cross, Illithis savant should still work.  The dragon HD don't hurt either.

Sure ... afb ... although the d20srd doesn't have any fluff text.

Widow's idea can easily be adapted from a Dragon Racial Class.
Savage Species has a few, I'm sure there are others.

Lyca ...  :pout ... kalamari = Squid = ika
versus ... gunkanmaki = Octopus = tako
Your anti-elitism is showing.

Yeah, that is why I always have trouble finding it.

Here is a build I've been fooling around with for a while now. It's not really optimized, but it'll let you approximate an Illithid's abilities at level 8.
Human PsyWar 1/Aberrant Paragon 1/PsyWar 4/Aberrant Paragon 2 (Dragon 332)

1-Illithid Heritage
H-Illithid Skin
1B-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
3-Illithid Legacy
3B- Traded in for Mantled Warrior ACF: The Planes
6-Illithid Grapple
6B-Illithid Extraction

Powers (ML 7):
1-Stomp, Grip of Iron, Astral Traveler, Psionic Charm
2-Psionic Levitate, Read Thoughts, Pick any two powers.
3-Astral Caravan (Aberrant Paragon has Knowledge: The Planes as a class skill)

Note: It's not printed in the article, but errata states that Aberrant Paragon's HD are D8's.

Variations:
I don't care about planar travel!
Human PsyWar 2/Aberrant Paragon 3/PsyWar 1
1-Illithid Heritage
H-Illithid Skin
1B-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
2B-Illithid Grapple
3-Illithid Extraction
6-Illithid Legacy

Gestalt = True Illithid
PsyWar 1/Aberrant Paragon 1/PsyWar 4/Aberrant Paragon 2
Psion (Telepath) 8

1-Illithid Heritage
H-Illithid Skin
1B-Illithid Grapple
1B-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
Flaw-Illithid Grapple
3-Illithid Extraction
3B- Traded in for Mantled Warrior ACF: The Planes
5B- Traded in for Telepathic Communication ACF
6-Illithid Skin (Hyperconscious alternative: Mental Adversary)
6B-Illithid Skin (or Overwhelm Buffer)
For the uninitiated, Aberrant Paragon provides two levels of class feature advancement (restricted to a list, but PsyWar manifesting is included), darkvision 120ft, aberration type, +2 constitution and a choice between +2 charisma or +2 strength and -2 charisma.
As ADMG mentioned, Complete Psionic has stats for Larval Flayers, which are tadpoles that grow too large to be implanted in a brain. They tend to be destroyed because they can't become normal Illithids anymore, only Neothelids, but they're CR 1 and might make a decent (improved) familiar.

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
