Wizard build for Carrion Crown AP
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:12:14 PM »
After a decade plus hiatus, the Carrion Crown AP got my old group together again to play through the adventure path once we've caught up on all the changes since 2E. I'll be playing a wizard and mulling over build ideas. Since this is an undead heavy campaign, I'm thinking Ench and Illusion for oppositional schools as these spells will likely be useless the majority of the time. Should I go conjuror specialization and embrace the controller role albeit one tailored to an undead heavy setting, or, given the lack of enchantment and illusion utility, am I better off as a blaster for this adventure path?

Any thoughts, advice, and input appreciated. I'm trying to catch up on a LOT of changes from 2E to Pathfinder.
We are using core rulebook and APG.

Illusion is perfectly serviceable against undead. Even better, really, since mindless undead don't even get saving throws.

Just don't use [mind-affecting] spells.

A changeling double-focused specialist 3/war weaver 5/shadowcraft mage 5/initiate of the sevenfold veil 7 could be really good here. Buff your allies, hinder your enemies, and protect yourself like nobody's business.

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

There is a major dichotomy here.

-Do you want to turn the battlefield into a comedy of errors while your friends mop up?  If so, go Conjurer.

-Do you want to turn your group, almost regardless of their builds, into this?  If so, go Transmuter.

For further advice, snuggle up with Treantmonk.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

I've always been an advocate of the philosophy that wizard should 1) controll the battlefield 2) buff and debuff
3) contribute offensively through efficient spell use once the aforementioned has effectively decided the outcome. My only real concern is tailoring this to an undead heavy campaign at the lower levels, and by this I mean insuring that undead immunities don't overly stymie my low level controll options. Once I hit 2nd level spells and have access to web, I'll be set. However, with 1st level spells options versus undead are a bit limited since Color Spray and Sleep won't be effective. I surmise I'll have to get the most out of grease, and use some low level summoning.

First level, then, will be all about the Grease. Let the undead trip on that slippery goop, then have your friends rush up and slaughter them with the +4 attack vs prone opponents.
YAY! I get to go to the SPECIAL hell!

"Alright men, time to break out the greatswords!"

Yes, I'm thinking Grease and enlarge person on "big stupid fighter" for level 1.
