Dread Necromancer Gestalt
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:07:01 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm going to bug you with another build idea.

Same rules as before. Gestalt, 32 pt buy, no setting specific material, no dragon magazine, no 3.0 material, and normal gestalt rules (1 PrC at a time)

One side is to be Dread Necromancer, the other... I'm undecided.

One thought was Sorceror (CHA synergy) maybe going into frostmage and picking up Lord of Uttercold.

Other, simpler, idea is to pick a buffing type of class (bard/marshal) to boost the minions.

So... What say you brilliant gameologists?

Binder!  There's charisma synergy, and the flavor is absolutely perfect.  Plus you end up with shocking amounts of variety in what you can do while still having this thematic "I raise creatures from the darkness to do my bidding" concept going.

Ugh, the rule set took out all the fun stuff like eldrich master.

Okay, lets try:

Dread Necromancer 20//Bard 4/Marshal 1/Mindbender 1/Rainbow Servant 4/Sublime Chord 1/ Rainbow Servant 6/ Sublime Chord 1/ Spellcasting PrC 2

Select Dread Necromancer as your target class for Sublime Chord, should net you a caster level of 28.  You can always go with an illumian if you want two persistant spells a day.

Dweromerkeep could always be another option if you were not interested in rainbow sevant.

Well, you want your undead to be really powerful, right? How about a buffing build? Try changeling focused double-specialist 3/war weaver 5/shadowcraft mage 5/legacy champion 6 (extending war weaver)/archmage 1.

Think of how nasty your skeletons could be when you PAO them into other kinds of undead abominations.

Depending on the party I like crusader X, bard 1 or binder for the other side

Or cleric if your DM will let you have two separate rebuke pools (hd, uses per day)
Failing that he may allow you to have turn and rebuke ... now have fun with metamagic while gaining the rest of the necromancy spells you want :)

Thanks for the prompt replies!

Binder is a nice suggestion, and one I always seem to overlook. I imgaine if I selected that, I should go into the Knight of the Sacred Seal PrC. I also imagine this would mean I should proabbly go with a Guisarme as my martial weapon, and my weapon focus.

Cleric was my first original thought, but the two casting stats to increase is what put me off it. A way around this perhaps?

Divine Magician Cleric + Geomancer.  Between this and Dread Necromancer, get every Necromancy spell you ever wanted, period, and apply DMM to all of it.

Geomancer sounds like a good idea... but from my reading of its main ability, you only apply it when casting a spell, not acquiring.

This means that to cast 9th level cleric spells, I still need a 19 WIS to learn them in the first place (but could then use my CHA to power their DCs).

Although... the idea gave me more insight into a concept. Something akin to the Gauldoth Half-Dead character from HOMM IV (for those of you who haven't played it, he is a necromancer who has half his body living whilst the other dead, and he also dabbles into nature magic)

Going along these lines, if I am crazy enough to have high starting stats (18 Wis + 16 Cha), I can still play as a Dread Necromancer//Cleric but possibly get access to the animal or plant domain (along with undeath or deathbound). Plus Pale Master looks like it'll give me roughly the same effects as the half death I want (never actually gaining the undead template, but having most of the goodies)

Not to completely shut away the binder option... are there any vestiges that grant nature-type effects?

Agres gives you an earth elemental companion to play with as well as other earth themed abilities.  Buer is a huntress themed vestige with life based abilities.  There's a bunch of others.  It's binding, there's a vestige for every theme (usually a few).
