Part 4.2: Akito Tenkawa: Angst Ninja

We did?

Dammit, not everyone in the goddamned game needs a tragic backstory!! Can't someone just fly robots because its cool? Like....Sayaka! Or the Combattler Team (Except Chizuru who's Grandpa died).

As opposed to....living? Jesus, what is up with this lady?

Even SRW has limits to how much exposition they can cram into a pre-battle scene.

Yay!

So this is the excuse for Nergal making Distortion Fields and Gravity Blasts, while the UEFA has to rely on cheap Tie-Fighter-like missile boats? Fair enough.

What 'rest of it'? The whole point is to investigate. Are you saying that if you do find survivors, you won't lift a finger to help? Geez....

Then, out of nowhere:

....And just as suddenly, we're on the Crocus. What the hell just happened?

You assaulted him? Akito, you crazy motherfucker. Stop pretending you're normal. Jun is normal, thats why he'll die a virgin. You're a Main Character, no matter how much you try to deny it.

If all UEFA ships are so heavily automated that one guy can operate them, whats the point of having such large crews? Do they get government grants if they employ more people, or do they just like having larger casualty figures?

Thanks Gai. We needed to be reminded that you run on cheesy dialogue, really.

Dammit, Calvina, will you ever make up you mind whether you give a shit or not?

We head to the battle site to see a familiar face:

He could also demand that they make up for murdering millions in the name of vague imperialism, but that'd just be silly. Any real peace treaty would have to have a clause where Earth agrees to forget Mars ever existed. And the UEFA would probably sign it without reading it, the retards.

"Full extermination? I thought we'd agreed on only half extermination! THIS WASN'T THE DEAL, GALE!!"

We finally get control and see that Meluas spirit commands are all for supporting allies: Cheer to boost XP gains and Trust to heal. Since she almost have enough to use Cheer twice, I'll use that: This way, when Melua gains some levels, we'll get to use two Spirit commands instead of one.

With the Aestivalis all using the Air frame, I can finally have the Nadesico Group Hug move at a decent pace. It requires some use of Minatos Accel command, but she's got plenty of PP to fuel it. We won't be using Alert much, because with the Distortion Field, the Nadesico rarely needs to dodge blows, and we have Jun's Wall command if we're in danger of taking a big hit.

We test out the Bellzelutes upgraded weapons, and sure enough, a critical from the Shot Launchers is enough kill an enemy grunt. Criticals are +50% damage, so normally this would only have been 2000, but with a Real Robot pilot with high Ability fighting an AI unit which tends to have higher accuracy but less Ability, crits are pretty likely.

The enemy turn sees them attacking mainly the Nadesico and Combattler, which achieves little but getting them slaughtered and increasing our units will. Its nice to see a game mechanics which means murder just makes you better at murdering. And its especially gratifying for the Nadesico, where most of the bad guys can't even bypass the field, meaning it only takes some energy drain once attacked.

Man, Ryoko really isn't all that hot with Ranged attacks is she?

The Air frame adds long-range missiles to the Aestivalis' armory, but even these are out-ranged by the guns of the enemy ships. We'd better get closer.

Kojis enhanced weapons still aren't enough to massacre things without building up to Mazinpower first. Shame. But at least he's still a champ at taking hits, Combattler seems to need to use spirits more while Kouji just takes hits on the chin.

Charged up with all the killing, but low on Dick Missiles, Combattler pulls out swords and goes to town. This is an odd attack which has no energy cost, similar to the Choudenji Yoyo, but does more damage and has a will requirement. Strange, but given that Combattlers later attacks can get EN-expensive perhaps its meant as a stopgap weapon for the team, rewarding higher will without crippling them for energy.

.....Why doesn't using lightning to spin yoyos cost energy, anyway?

The Nadesicos missile attack is great against unshielded grunts, but lacking against shielded targets like the big ships. It sure would be good if we could fire the big gun and then move, like Calvina does...

Part 4.3: Evil won't triumph, but Good is still Dumb

We finish up our turn with Roanne getting to use his big gun, and wait for the enemy to charge into our guns again.

I forget to have Calvina cast focus, and the enemy again use their accurate melee attacks, but she manages to dodge and respond.

However, their preferred target is still the massive Combattler, which with the Blue Earth supporting can easily weather the storm and unleash hell in return.

The Nadesicos constant use of the Gravity Blast catches up with it, and its reduced to using missiles while it waits to recharge. It recharges 10% energy each turn, but that doesn't help as much when you're burning through about that much with each shot. Luckily their flanks are thinning out and where won't be as many to jam themselves up the gun barrel.

One  of the few remaining grunt units attacks Mazinger from too short a range, and gets punished with one of its stronger attacks.

David takes a hit meant for Sayaka, who then flubs the counterattack. Not really her fault, since Karla is a Layzner boss, and missing them is hardly a rare occurence.

...Didn't they have basically the same conversation last level?

Because I'd forgotten Focus, I had to have Calvina evade this attack. We have to be careful with attacking Gale until we pull off the ordered Convince.

My turn again, and I send in the Layzner Team to clean up the last of the SPTs while the others beat on the stubborn battleships.

You've already fired three shots....

Not much hurt, but still a favorable outcome.

The Buldy is a handy unit with than gun of its, but since the gun needs a fair bit of energy, you're usually better off conserving it and having Roanna focus on repairs, only using the gun to counter. However, the enemy far prefers to attack David. Hmm....

The Nadesicos may be big compared to the tiny SPTs but its still got the stats to have a decent chance to hit. Shame about the damage on the missiles, though. They just don't compare to the massive output of the Gravity Blast. But hey, we need to conserve energy for a few turns.

Making up for being brutalised last mission, Izumi takes out Karla, gains two levels thanks to Meluas Cheer, and gets some interesting drops.

Hikaru triggers a formation attack, but again, the enemy D-fields really take the edge off of it.

Combattler beats the other ship near to death, and Calvina finishes it off with her weakest attack. Dunno why I chose it, just felt like showing it off I guess.

Once again, Mazingers attacks fall short, but this hit triggers his Mazinpower, so maybe now he'll improve.

The ship attacks the Nadesico, and our mothership has just enough EN left to fire a fatal counter.

Gale attacks Calvina again, probably because I forgot to get anyone else close to him. I keep forgetting how short-ranged SPTs, even the customs, can be.

I use Davids turn to reload the Nadesico, and fill up its EN again. It means he can't move, however, so the Laynzer Team have to split up for a while. Thankfully we should be able to deal with things this turn, giving us time to get the gang back together.

I use Roannes Scan command on Gale to make him easier to hit. Kinda presumptous when we haven't tried talking to him yet, but since Roanna doesn't have any other spirits, its not like its a waste or anything.

Anyway, lets see what words can do:

If Star Trek has taught us anything, its that mixed-race people will always be torn between both cultures and unable to function without being obsessed with the non-human one.

"Ben and Jerrys or Haagen-Daas, Eiji!! Choose now!!"

This bit of terminology confusion seems to be a japanese language thing, with 'Ningen' (Human) being a seperate term from 'Chikyujin' (Earth-person). It comes up in a lot of series, even Gundam where there are no aliens (other than those T-1000 things in the last movie), as a point that just because people from Earth and people born in space are going to invariably be different, they're all still people and should try to get along.
But Gale isn't in the mood to listen a pile of Otaku bullshit like that.

Hmm...There it is again, the idea that Earthlings are just dumb monkeys now, but in a hundred years they'll be marauding across the galaxy like a pack of drunken Glaswegians in a minicab.
The SRW Original Generations games play with this idea a bit: Its heavily implied that if the Zuvorg hadn't given Earth its Black Hole tech, and the Balmarians hadn't begun experimenting on them with the Neviim and the 'gift' of ExtraOver Technology, then Earth might never have become the ludicrous danger zone for everything extraterrestrial that it is by the end of the second game.
Anyway, diplomacy has failed, so obviously the best thing to do is to shoot him in the face with Gravity.

That doesn't quite kill him so I decide to let Gai have a shot at him, and shockingly, he manages to pull off the hit!! Gale is down!

He drops an interesting part: A HE Radar extends the range of a mechs weapons by a square. It doesn't affect Map Weapons though, or attacks that only have a 1 Square range anyway. Still, handy for units that would otherwise be unable to counter some enemies.

Again, we see that Gale really has far better standards than everyone else on the Grados side.

I couldn't capture it, but explosions blossom all around Gales wrecked Greimkaiser.

Again, more explosions I couldn't snap in time, and suddenly Gale's icon is yellow, implying he's a nuetral unit now!

Man....I know they had to show that the Gradosians are the bad guys, but this dickhole is so cartoonishly and pointlessly evil, it throws me out of the game. Its like if Cobra Commander and Hannibal Lecter had a baby.

...Huh. So, now we're debating whether saving the only enemy we have that isn't insanely sadistic, laughablely incompetent, or both, is a good plan, hmm?

Any way of enticing more dialogue out of Ruri? She increasingly comes across as "the one sane person".

That is pretty much her character.....And I am trying to include her snarks when possible, its just that they usually take the form of minor observations, petty throwbacks, or just saying 'Idiots'. And while its grin-inducing when comically timed right, these snippets don't really add that much to the proceedings, and it becomes difficult to justify adding them when we already have 100+ pictures in each update. I will try to put her in when I can though.

Part 4.4: Its a good thing Gosterro can only shoot that far during cutscenes.

Another Calvina shrug of acceptance. "Sure, I have my alignment written down as Nuetral Good, so I might as well save him."

Akito temporarily forgets that the rest of the group are PCs.

So now we have to defend Gale, which isn't helped by the fact that he has 10 HP (the minimum damage an attack can do), and we can't heal him. Even one hit will be enough to put him down...

Luckily, Calvina, Combattler and the Blue Earth are far forward and haven't moved yet, so I send them barrelling into the enemy lines as a distraction.

It works. The enemy could charge past our guys and attack Gale, but the AI is still on 'shoot the nearest easy-to-hit target', so they continue to die in droves on our guns. Calvina in particular gets to massacre the ones that can't get inside the range of her O Rifle.

After several stages of running after Kouji and patching up his scrapes like a fussy housewife, Sayaka finally gets a level-up. Repairing just doesn't seem to give the same XP as Resupplying, unless you're repairing folks several levels above you, and despite the Love bonus Kouji gets from having Sayaka nearby, he hasn't over-levelled like, say, Calvina and the Nadesico have.

Predicting some heavy combat, I throw Guard onto Combattler and send it into the enemies ships, to wreak havoc. Unfortunately, being out of Big Blasts, it has to rely on weaker attacks.

Again, I make the mistake of not casting Focus on Calvina, and the enemy has a go with her. She only got him once, though, and not for that much damage. The Grados grunts melee attacks are accurate but fairly weak, it seems.

Gosterro hits Combattler, who doesn't counter because of the tiny hit chance. Darned Layzner bosses...

We finish off the enemy ships, and then its just Gosterro.

Cast Alert on Sayaka so she's safe, and lets see if she can hurt him.

Dagnabbit, his Ability is high enough to trigger a Shoot Down defense. Missiles really aren't a great attack type in his game.

Well, the Nadesico crew have finally caught up, and lo and behold, between friendship bonuses and Yurikas Command aura, Gai actually has a decent chance to hit!! Lets see what happe.....HOLY SHIT!!!

For some reason Gosterro has two quotes when he dies. Maybe one of them was supposed to be when he got to half health, and we triggered them both. Or maybe we just killed him twice.

Part 4.5: In his honour, we shall eat ham every night for a month.

As Gale considers this, several more SPTs appear around him, to escort him back to base.

"After all, see what we do with our own war criminals!"

And with this, Gale flies off.

Thats like the fifth time you've said that Eiji. Cant'cha think of a new line to express dissappointment?

Meanwhile, on the enemy ship:

After all, humans commit atrocities on other humans all the time! Isn't that why you're invading us in the first place, to stop us doing that to ourselves? Surely Gradosian atrocities are better than earthling atrocities.

Oh well, guess Gale is still only in Morally Conflicted territory rather than being ready to change sides.

They were the ones trying to KILL their command unit!! Why would they fall back? They admitted to being bloodthirsty psychopaths.

Maybe you'd have had more time if you hadn't wasted several minutes landing and running up to the bridge to have a chat. Just saying...

I hate when SRW characters say this because its almost never true. Ok, maybe in J and the later games the mechanics are changed so that weight of numbers can have an impact, but in Alpha Gaiden setting up your force so that you can hold off near-infinite waves of grunts was trivial. It was only by improving the quality of troops that the enemy could hope to win, otherwise they would have to send to many guys that you ran out of ammo, and even then some units had no-cost attacks that would keep them going until their pilots ran out of SP, if that was even needed.
SRW is really big on storyline and gameplay segregation. Its the old Wrought-Iron Fence Made of Tigers, except herethe tigers are 50 meters tall and have spears, nunchucks and drill hands.

NOT THE TIME.

NO! REALLY? I'D NEVER HAVE GUESSED!

Meanwhile Noel is desperately trying to get the escape pods to work.

...Well, the sentiment is nice I guess...

Suddenly, explosions!!

Wait, space battleships fire shells now? Why would you shoot unguided solid munitions from a space battleship? Where are the lasers and missiles?

...which would still probably bounce right off the D-Field, given that we're in cutscene time now and the Nadesico is leeching defensive power from the energy savings of not having to animate anyone.

Its not so much that she wants to, as the inievitable outcome of you getting onto the same ship as her.

"I don'te Caaare!! I must blame people for things! BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMME!!!"

Aw come on! You sit around doing nothing for 4 stages you think that entitles you to make an Obi-Wan Sacrifice? And why can't you say what it is we have? You think we won't beleive you if you come clean and admit its 'Main Character Status'?

Wait, so he was closer to the Tulip than we were? I thought he was behind us...

Your player really isn't all that pushed about the campaign, is he, Calvina?

And then they used flamethrowers.

Again, nothing more than a flash onscreen. Does making all the sprite animations really eat up all of their art budget?

Well, maybe if he was down in the Hangar Bay, like he should be, then he could. But he got caught up in the rush to the bridge to angst about how fucked we are, and only now are we realising what a bad plan that was.

And we fade to the Intermission screen. Gai has been removed from our roster. Goodnight, sweet prince. Hope that death was good enough for you.

Another simple Puzzle Robo: Sayaka has to get to the building marked with the red square, but there are two Battas in the way. What will we do?

We have the usual run of Questions: Who should we upgrade? Who should get priority for parts? But a few more questions arise: Now that we've built up a supply of pilot points, which stats should certain pilots prioritise? And Finally, now that we've tried each of the Bellzelute girls once, who should we continue using?

Melua enhances Armor (hence why the Bellzelute was oddly resilient last mission) and movement speed, and her spirits are focused on supporting allies, making her a good choice for a more completative playthrough using lots of support spirits. However, because Calvina tends to gain levels quickly with her I often use her to weaken a boss, and then when the time comes around to kill the boss Meluas commands aren't available. Its a playstyle quirk of mine.

Katias enhances our ability to dodge, meaning less to worry about from the enemies, and enhances the Bellzellutes already ridiculous weapons range. Her spirits are divided between support and secondary offense enhancement.

Festenia increases weapon damage and crit rate, and her spirits are designed for a rough-and-tumble approach, increasing offense and healing damage.
Katia is generally considered the best sub-pilot for the Bellzelute, allowing you to out-snipe the enemy and maintain distance, and making the mech harder to hit in the first place. Melua is considered best for the Granteed, which is otherwise slow as hell, and Tenia for the Coustwell, since its short-range and has to rush into the enemy to succeed. But theres nothing stopping another approach: I played with Melua in the Coustwell and Tenia in the Granteed, and they worked out fine for me there.
The three girls shared a common XP pool, so we don't have to worry about leaving them low on levels if we choose only one. Theres nothing stopping us switching between them every mission if we wanted....except that to unlock our best attacks, we need to use one of the girls at least 20 times, and there's only 50 stages in the game so at most you can focus on two of them if you want the ultimate finishers.

So what will we do? Choose one? Choose two? Screw final attacks and rotate all three? And will we make a final decision now, or review it every couple of levels?

Place your orders, gentlemen.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

Decisions:

Since we're using Calvina instead of Touya, there's no real point to rotating the subpilots every turn.
With Touya, doing so gets the homolust harem ALTERNATE ending... which Calvina gets by default.
Personally I suggest we stick with Katia for all the game.

Let's upgrade Mazinger's weapon damage and armour and the Three Angel's EN just slightly so they can spam their combination attacks. Even with them inside the field emmited by the Nadesico's energy antenna, it's just too much for all three to initiate it on one turn, since combo attacks take EN from all participants.

As an HE Radar part has been gained, I suggest equipping it to Layzner, given the obvious problems with SPT's weapon's ranges.

Minor point: Just want to cover the theme music of some of our other units that I hadn't mentioned yet.

Mazinger and Aphrodite are using Fire Wars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUBMi8igtf0

The Blue Earth uses a track called Reason: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CHoD9TtS3g

And Eiji, David and Roanne use a track called Path of Melos - Lonely Way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzu4WShwZJo

No worries on Ruri dialogue. Just stating a preference.

I would like Swap, but useful with this roster? Energy for the battleship, we need more gravity blasting. Mobility for slower units so they can get killin' sooner. HP/Armour for Bellzeute.

I like the sound of Festenia, with Katia as a second preference. Perhaps switch between these two so that they're both more viable for the final battle(s). I'm okay with (semi-)regular votes.

Stick with Katia. I WILL say that Festenia has by FAR the best finishers in the game, animation-wise, but Katia is the better choice for this mech.

And yeah... I'm in general agreement on Stealth with most of these. Consider me seconding most of what he's said.

Edit: Also, if anyone out there does not like Reason, there is something horribly wrong with them.

Part 5.1: Home Sweet Hell

Even though no-one posted a solution, heres how to beat the last Puzzle Robo: Move Mazinger in to use his best attack, kill one of the Battas, and allow Aphrodite to move to the needed point. Childishly simple.

Because she's edging level 7, Calvina has several stat points to distribute. I put them into accuracy and ranged damage mainly, as we don't want to boost her dodge too far. Accuracy and damage are always good to boost, you'll never regret being able to hit those annoying Layzner and Tekkaman bosses.

I start handing out all the modules and parts we've been getting to improve certain characters strengths. Since we don't have a roster as such yet, I'm mainly prioritising by need. Combattler is doing so much heavy fighting that giving it Armor boosts seems wise, although that booster might be the reason its getting so much action while some slower units might be falling behind.

Upgrades go around, mainly to Mazinger and the Nadesico crew. We didn't have enough money left for upping the Bellzelute, but it should be fine with Katia enhancing the dodge, right?

And finally, we switch the Aestivalis to Zero-G Frames because I'm psychic and know this will be a space mission. I could have given some the Artillery Frame, which also works in space, but with current group hug tactics the Aestis are slow enough as it is.

Huh. That seems awfully convenient. I mean, presumably, we went into one Tulip and came out another, but what were the chances we picked one that came out in the Earth Sphere, as opposed to one in the middle of the Jovian Fleet?

Everyones naturally ecstatic, especially the Cosmic Culture Club kids, and Eiji starts gushing about how beautiful it looks. But since he's only half earthling, shouldn't he only find it half beautiful?

Boy, you two just can't help but try and quash even the smallest of joys, can you?

We can't go too long without some Calvina angst, or people will think she's capable of positive emotions.

This typical scene is subverted by ominous noises from Ruris console.

So the UEFA accidentally started shooting each other and it escalated into an entire squadron blowing the crap out of each other? Makes as much sense as anything else they do.

Naturally, an entire battalions worth of hi-tech missile boats made of metal and armed with all of mankinds weaponry can't handle a few dozen squishy organic creatures armed with teeth and spit. The wonders of biotechnology.

Yurika, you're a PC. You can use the 'Its coming straight at us!' defense and go in guns blazing. No need to pretend to be civil.

Having only just stopped crying into the Gekiganger hug pillow that Gai lent him, Akito is understandably confused.

"This is what you get for going to the bathroom during plot exposition, Steve."

This is the point where the game allows you to pick which of the girls to use. After this, they can be swapped at the intermission menu. Currently the only other swappable pilots we have are Koji and Sayaka, who can switch machines, plus you can swap Ruri and Yurika, and Noel and Aki as main pilots of their ships.

Again Nadesicos subversive approach kicks in as Akito begins to deconstruct the concept of the Noble Sacrifice and Redemption Through Badass Death.

And it appears Akitos picked up another lovestruck bunny. Without the actual Nadesico episodes to give characterisation time, we just have to assume this was blooming behind the scenes.

Part 5.2: Not that having a non-biological being able to do all these physically questionable things is any more realistic.

Ok, I'll buy that you can tell from here they're non-earth beings, but how exactly can you tell they're alive? They can't be breathing, I doubt they're eating or pooping, and what would be the detectable difference between a heartbeat and body heat, and the output of a reactor? Really, any lifeform that could operate in space would have to be built to make it essentially indistinguishable from an actual spaceship.

Yurika gets back into the groove.

Calvina takes the news that the Bellzelute makes her a Jedi with her usual attitude.

The usual tactics start up: The Nadesico, Layzner, and Mazinger Teams form up, and Combattler, Blue Earth and Bellzelute fly ahead because they have no partners to wait on. Bellzelute is just in range for an attack with the Snipe spirit, and has a high dodge chance against the goop these things spit back. Ok, looks like our mech is finally ok to kick ass without worrying about casting Focus all day.

Setup after turn 1, there are more enemies below us. The reason Hikaru and Izumi didn't move is because Ryoko was deployed further back and the Nadesico Hug had to hang back to let her join. I could have fixed this during deployment, but I generally don't worry about this kind of thing after wasting hours on it during my plays of OG2.

Enemy turn and...

Oh god what.

BAD TOUCH!! BAD TOUCH!!

We hit the thing back hard, but it doesn't make the situation any less hairy. It seems half the monsters are relatively harmless acid-spitters, and half have highly accurate close-range tentacle attacks that also restrict movement for a turn. It doesn't help that, much like the 'stomach mounted' Big Blast missiles, the super-deformed graphics make the tentacles pierce right through our robots crotch.

Combat continues with a few more of our guys being hit. Bellzelute is looking weak...

I use the reduced movement of the Bellzelute to get it closer to Sayaka, who can repair it...

And then mispress a button and the Aphrodite ends its turn instead of healing Calvina. Goddammit.

We still only have one character with Trust other than Sayaka, so its a really annoying mistake to make, and doing it again could leave Calvina in big trouble. But for now, shes at decent health and have Focus cast, and backup is on the way.

Mazingers damage edges ever-closer to killing these grunts, but again they seem to have balanced the enemies so that they remain just out of reach after reasonable upgrades. If only getting more will was easier, but this early on, you really need the enemy to pound on Mazinger for a while to get Koujis will up. Kinda what they do with Combattler right now.

I move in the Nadesico to finish off a monster wounded by Calvina, and apparently this is enough to set Akito off again:

"I forbid you from standing still. Do the Monkey, right this moment!"

And with this Akitos Aestivalis jumps like 20 squares to the middle of the map. So much for keeping still.

You coulda just said 'He's wigging out', and saved us 6 images.

All of a sudden, a new face appears:

Inez: "Hey!! Its my job to explain the bleeding obvious!!"

What an unsuspicious man.

The Angels (Is that what we're calling them now? I preferred the Mints) move in and get kills on the weakened swarm. Izumi and Hikaru level up, but Ryoko stubbornly stays on level 4.

Akatsuki doesn't have Focus like the other Aesti pilots, only alert, so he's less useful for flying into swarms, but I'm putting him on Group Hug duty so it doesn't matter as much. He sidles up to the Nadesico and shoots some bugs.

Only now while writing this up do I realise that I forgot to check if he actually has friend bonuses with the others from Nergal.

The Layzner team finish up my second turn.

Part 5.3: I don't trust these Nuetrals....

The enemy turn proceeds as normal, with the enemy focusing mainly on Mazinger and Combattler. Some of the long-range venom-spitters try to snipe Mazinger, but unlike the Aestivalis, it has a longrange attack.

Still not quite killing them...

Combattle continues to dutifully take hits and return them.

David takes a hit meant for Eiji, who then returns a smackdown of his own. Man, his normal weapons just don't seem to have that much punch right now.

Meanwhile, the Nadesico crew are getting on fine.

I should point out that one of the reasons that these things are so tough to kill is that they have regeneration, regaining 30% of their health at the start of each of their turns. For normal enemies, weakening them all on your turn then finishing them off on theirs is a valid tactic, but with these guys its often better to focus on killing a few of them on your turn, then damaging the other on their turn after their regeneration is wasted.

Once you get down to the last few, Ruri gives you this warning.

The Mints swoop in for some more kills, and Hikaru shanks one. Gotta love how even though they're organic, they explode just like robots.

Mazinger snipes one with another Rust Hurricane, then the Layzner crew finish them off.

Predictably:

Oh well, lets get to work finishing off the-

Huh. Another unit marked yellow for nuetral.

And unlike the others, this one actually gets a turn, allowing it to fight the monsters too.

Combattler continues to kick ass now that its will is high.

All that following Combattler around healing it finally makes the Blue Earth crew level up. I gotta say though, the repairer don't seem to be getting the amount of XP I'd expect. Maybe its only something that kicks in once the amount they repair each time goes up.

Slow but steady, the Group Hug heads forward, killing as they go. I just wish Ryoko would get more kills, even with Yurika using Cheer on her she seems to taking forever to get levels.

With her will up, Calvina can also do her job properly, sniping from extreme range and then moving forward.

This is Combattlers weakest attack, and it still seems to be enough for everyday work. Was it taking vitamins between playthroughs?

A few enemies try to take on the newcomer, but they don't have that much affect. And then, This guy shows us how its really done. Pretty impressive...But also kinda annoying, since kills by Nuetrals mean we don't get any XP or money. And other than racing straight for the second waves spawn point from the very beginning of the level, theres not a whole lot you can do to stop him.

Another turns movement and we've cleared out most of them, but still we're too far to stop the kill-stealing.

Which becomes academic, because the thing soaks another hit and does one of those non-lethal explosions.

It always irritates me how the Japanese have to use the terms 'Shot down' or 'Sunk' when talking about units in space being destroyed or disabled.

Muuuuuuch better, now that Mazinpower is active.

We continue to much through the last of them, with Combattler and Calvina getting the final blows.

She says this even if he's alive at the end of the stage, probably because of plot reasons
like his transformation going on too long
.

The Nadesico picks the thing up, and get a surprise.

They don't seem to be too concerned about him being naked.

Because you're like 6 foot 5 and about the same wide?

Y'know, learning that Urubitake has his own family, who he neglects in order to tinker with the Aestivalis, has made me a lot less sympathetic to his mechaphilia.

Curse you, Moore Laws of Mecha!

Part 5.4: These 9 months have been pregnant...with uselessness

Whut? Wait, just one boson, or all of them?

Well...Ok, I think I get that part, but if it uses Bosons to move matter around, what happens to all the Fermions in the ship? You know, all the Quarks and Electrons? Bosons are the particles that hold atoms together, while Fermions are the particles that actually make up the atoms. If you're only making the bosons expand and jump, do you have to get replacement fermions on the other end? Are we going to have the old transporter debate whether our heroes have died and been replaced by identical copies?

Anyway, about the transforming man:

Hey, don't lump us in with you!

Infinitely superior to anything the UEFA has, naturally.

The UEFA are too dumb to realise they lost the war 2 months in, and so refuse to stop sending wave after wave of their men to die.

This is one thing I always hate about humanity in these kinds of apocalyptic situations, the idea that politics and ideology will still rule some peoples lives and affect major desicions in the face of Armageddon. The idea that people will still try to kill each other when the doom of the entire human race is staring them in the face is the kind of over-realistic stupidity I play videogames to get away from.

After all, when has Prospector failed us before?

I'd howl bloody murder at this, but we're talking about the UEFA here. Not like ZAFT are gonna do anything, they're safe in space, a couple of forests in Africa aren't gonna worry their occupation forces. And all the civilian super-scientists are busy with their own things, as we'll see.

WHAT

WHAT

WHAT

Gee, maybe the UEFA shoulda thought about that before they fucking started it.

Wait, if your Aestivalis only has 100 Energy, how did you even get to the Nadesico? Were we within 100 squares of a Nergal colony? Can't be, because we're about to go somewhere else.

Such things as logic cannot pierce the mighty skull of Akito Tenkawa, Sex God.

Inspired by Akitos success with the ladies, Akatsuki tries to mimic his success.

You just can't compare with the original, Mr Latecomer.

Because we've had such success with nuetrals up till now.

Skipping on:

I could make a terrible joke about Yurika not being able to parrallel park, but I'll try to stay classy.

What follows is all the Mazinger and Layzner girls dragging the boys out shopping.

Is there anything to do on this 5-mile wide, 20-mile long tube besides shop and study Space Science?

You cannot defy Capitalism, woman!

Meanwhile, an ominous group whose intentions towards us might be blurrier if their text boxes weren't in red is talking, well, ominously.

At least this guy know how dangerous we are.

Finally! Some damned recognition!

Looks like quite the Quirky Miniboss Squad they've got going here.

DUN DUN DUUUUN.

And we're back at intermission.

Despite Akatsukis Aesti supposedly being so much more advanced, we can still give it all the frames we normally use. Next map is going to be inside the colony, which counts as normal terrain, so will we swap everyone into Air, Artillery or Ground Frames? Pick and Mix?

The puzzle robo is a little tougher this time around. Ryoko and Akito, both on critical health, have to work together to beat one of the space monsters without being killed themselves. Akito can only get close enough to use his rifle, and niether of them have any SP, so no spirit command tricks. Niether has Support Attack either, they'll have to attack seperately.

And yes, Ryoko has a love bonus with Akito. Like I said, the relationship bonuses were programmed to endgame levels, not changing throughout.

Other than the usual things of choosing Aestivalis Frames, Choosing who gets upgrades, and solving the puzzles, we have another decision to make. We're nearing the point where we can only deploy some of our units, due to the games hard limit of 16 player units. With the Nadesico and three units we'll be getting next time, we'll only be allowed to deploy 12 mechs next time. So its about time we organised a roster.

Who do you want to see getting priority deployments? And who do you want to see used the least. This is the point where favorites and unfavorites should come to light. Tell me what you think. If you like, I can do a Roster Report on our dudes, to explain which ones seem to do best and which might have been overlooked, but my own biases might show through. Up to you guys.

Would getting Ryoko close to Akito give his rifle shots a boost with love?

I'm leaning towards ground units.

I'd like to see a straight list of what robots we have and who's currently piloting them, if only because the lesser used ones are more likely to be overlooked. The angels certainly and yer man Akatsuki so far.

Frames wise, I say we put the three girls and Akito in either air or ground frames, but put Akatsuki in an Art. Frame.

There won't be any need to keep Akatsuki in the group hug since he's a prick he doesn't get relationship bonuses, so don't worry about leaving him behind.

For the puzzle robo? Akito's attack should be able to kill it if he gets his Love bonus...

My understanding was that Love Bonuses affected the person who had it, not the person they were affected by. So Ryoko loving Akito would mean that Ryokos damage is boosted. But if Ryoko moves to where Akito will end up, she won't be able to use melee, only the ranged attacks she's not good at.
