Final touches on a Sorcerer build? (first post, be nice)
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:06:39 PM »
Hey guys, I've assembled a Sorcerer/Incantantrix build using your most helpful guides (and a few others on Wizards). I'm going for the Mailman build, sorta, but a bit less cheese as well as a bit more utility.

Info you should know:

We are starting at level 10, with all 49,000 gold.

Party
Fighter/Kensi
Paladin
Cleric - not fully optimized, but he's learning :)
Wizard - very optimized, but he's trying to tone down a bit for this party

The campaign is an Eberron campaign, and we're caravan escorts for a group that's establishing interplanar trade routes.

Vitals
Race: Human
Level breakdown: Sorcerer 6 / Incantantrix 5

Feats (Build)
1: Improved Initiative
1 (H): Iron Will
3: Maximize Spell
6: Practical Metamagic - Maximize
7 (Incant): Enlarge Spell
9: Quick Recovery (for Celerity)

Spell List
Level 1
Lesser Orb of Acid
Mage Armor (because yes)
True Strike
Benign Transposition
Charm Person (I'm party facing)

Level 2
Glitterdust
Wings of Cover (yes)
Mirror Image
Scorching Ray
Detect Thoughts (spellfinding in progress)

Level 3
Dispel Magic
Great Thunderclap
Slow
Haste

Level 4
Wings of Flurry
Celerity

Level 5
Arcane Fusion

Stats (should I rearrange? I think they're fine as-is)
STR: 10
DEX: 20                <- ranged touch attack, reflex save
CON: 14
INT: 14                  <- much-needed skill points
WIS: 10
CHA: 26

Saves and Other Stuff
Fort: 5
Reflex: 8
Will: 10
AC: 27 (hehehe.)
HP: 50 (very nice rolls)

Current initiative mod is +11 and +5 3/day with Wand of Nerveskitter.

I think I'm fine on gear so far as there's nothing vital that was missed in the 3 or so guides I read (Solo's, Mailman, and some Sorc guide on Wizards). So, feedback? As you can see, there's another Wizard in the party, Cleric and Paladin can heal, etc, so I'm doing minor buff/debuff (just slow and haste) while the Wizard can be adaptable. Otherwise, the Mailman I am!

Oh, and I'm not playing a Kobold. I don't do cheese.

Thanks in advance :D

Dimension Door is a 4th level spell, not 3rd. If you want a replacement for Detect Thoughts, Fog Cloud is always fun, especially when you couple it with Invisible Spell to screw over anyone with True Seeing/See Invisibility. Alternatively, take Invisibility and watch your DM try to figure out what happens when you cast an Invisible Invisibility.

How are you planning to enter Incantrix with only 5 levels of sorcerer? IIRC you need 3rd level spells, which you won't get till level 6.

Ooh, valid point on the door. And I think I'm missing something on the Fog Cloud...care to clarify?

And @ Slayer: Really? That sucks, I'll switch it around then... the Mailman guide had level 5 Incant at ECL 10, so that's weird I guess

An Invisible Fog Cloud doesn't hinder anyone who can't see invisible things. Tactics ensue. (Although Solid Fog is much better, especially since you want to keep people from moving out of the cloud.)

And yeah, I'm pretty sure incantatrix requires third level spells. I only know of a single arcane prestige class that lets people in at lower levels (master specialist).

Oh, haha - I get it. I dunno, I'll think about it, I feel like the party wizard would be better with BC spells.

Fair enough, although if you're working as caravan guards, it'll probably come into play more often than Detect Thoughts. It's still useful if you use the don't-think-about-pink-elephants gag, though.

Also, no Wings of Flurry?

Well, I might be mistaken (and probably am, by the track record with this thread), but isn't it centered on me? Or is the range more than just the 30-foot radius?

The fact that the range doesn't extend and that it's a Reflex save annoys me. Level 10+ and Reflex saves makes me sad.

That's very true, but it allows for selective targeting and, more importantly, doesn't have a damage dice cap. Less important at 10th level, perhaps, but be sure to pick it up.

Alright - and does it center on me or not? The "Range - 30 feet" "Area - 30 feet" is confusing me.

If you DM has given you enough XP to pick up a 1 LA template without lowering your level (something like 50k XP is typical for a level 10 game, which gives enough room to pay 3k for a template) then pick up Draconic. +2 STR, CON, and CHA virtually for free is nice for a sorcerer. It also gives you dragonblood which lets you in to the dragonblood sorcerer substitution levels and gives CL boosts for spells like wings of flurry, iirc.

Think of it as a Fireball with really poor range. Still kind of restricts your range, but you can aim it at any point within 30 feet and have that be the center of the burst.

@ Slayer: I'll ask, and thanks for the advice, but as I understand it my DM falls under the category of "the Nazi." I doubt he'll allow it.

@ Boz: Cool. I think for l10 spells I'll stick with Orb of Force and Celerity though.

DM = Nazi but Celerity is in? Sense, this makes none.

Well, to be entirely fair, he doesn't have a blanket immunity to daze.

Celerity is in after about an hour of argument, and very tentatively at that.

He may as well. Quick Recovery + Spellcaster is almost automatic.

Celerity is in after about an hour of argument, and very tentatively at that.
I virtually guarantee that your DM will change his mind when he sees Quick Recovery in action.

He won't be getting that much mileage out of it at 10th level, but yeah. If you are forced to swap it out, see if you can swap out the feat too.

Oh, of course.

Basically, we're on a gentleman's agreement; I won't abuse the hell out of Celerity if he lets me have it. :]

I notice you misspelled Wings of Flurry as "Orb of Force."
