Trees of Skill, Magic and Melee
« on: February 26, 2011, 03:12:45 PM »
Prompted by the Fixing it Thread here is my ideas for a tree based leveling system for D&D. It obviously isnt playable at the moment but hopefully i can finish it at some point.

Help is appreciated obviously.

Characters use the D&D leveling system and all characters use the commoner class as a base but with no class skills other than Profession and Craft. Every time a character levels up they gain 2 points to spend on abilities from the trees.

Core Skills
Core skills are the center of the tree, they are packages that dont fit into the specilised trees but are otherwise needed for the character to work.

Tree Bonuses: Each tree gives a bonus to your abilities. For every 4 points you spend in a tree you gain a +1 Bonus to your base save depending on the tree. Meta Trees give the bonuses of both trees and core skills give no bonus.
Melee = Fort Saves. Base Attack Bonus +1/4
Skill = Reflex Saves. Max DC bonus +1/2
Magic = Will Saves.

Base Attack Bonus:
Base attack bonus increases by +1 for every 4 points spent in the melee tree.

Max DC bonus:
Max DC bonus is a limiter on the maximum bonus you can have to a skill check. It is set at +0 normally but points spent on the skill tree increase the cap by 1 for every 2 points spent. This cap applies to all bonuses other than skill ranks, ability modifiers and racial bonuses.

Demi Tree Bonuses:
Melee-
Wild:
Weapons:
Martial Arts:

Skill-
Craft:
Subtlety:
Social:

Magic:
Arcane: +1/2 arcane caster level, +1/4 max spell level, Arcane Spell Slots
Divine: +1/2 divine caster level, +1/4 max spell level, Divine Spell Slots
Psionic: +1/2 manifester level, +1/4 max power level, Bonus PP

Class Archetypes:
Class archetypes are special bonuses granted to characters who meet certain requirements with their points spent. Core skills are not counted towards these bonuses in any way. Having points spent in core skills will not disqualify you from taking for example the Wizard bonus as long as the rest of your points are spent in the magic tree.

Fighter: 90% of points spent in the Weapons demi tree. Bonus: Additional Feats.
Rogue: At least 75% of points spent in Subtlety demi tree, 25% of points spent in melee. Bonus: Sneak Attack
Paladin: At least 25% of points spent in Divine Magic demi tree and the rest spent in the Melee tree. Bonus: Charisma to Will Saves.
Wizard: At least 90% of points spent in Arcane Magic demi tree. Bonus: Prepared spellcasting
Sorcerer: At least 90% of points spent in the arcane magic demi tree. Bonus: Extra spells per day
Druid: At least 25% of points spent in the Wild demi tree and at least 25% in the Divine demi tree. Total of Divine and Wild must reach at least 90%. Bonus: enhanced wild shape
