Help with a sketch of a Sylph Build ... thoughts?
« on: February 01, 2011, 03:57:30 AM »
Should be playable from level 8 up ... which makes it tricky, given how fragile they are ... we've seen these type of "CHA to everything, boy am I tough" builds, but I've never seen them on a spellcaster ...

Sylph 3/+5/Monk 2/Marshall 1/Paladin 2/Rogue 2/Arcane Duelist 2/Hexblade 3/
Casts as a Sorcerer 19
Cha to Saves*2 and to AC * 2 and to Initiative, and for spellcasting
Evasion, Mettle, Spell Reflection
2 fighter feats from Feat Rogue (Improved Toughness, Improved Initiative)
Dodge and Mobility from Monk

The trick is just surviving the first few low levels.

Other thoughts for a good build?

Best,
David

Non-PC activities like out of combat healing should be left to wands and NPCs. It's not fun to play a walking wand of CLW. Likewise, being a combat wall is not a viable PC role. A Wall of Force could do that.

-Sort of, but you left out the important note that a Wall of Force does it better.

The most powerful character is the one that you actually get to play.

I often have to remind people not to underrate divination.  The ability to effectively metagame without actually metagaming beats the ability to set things on fire more times than not.

I'm AFB, but, IIRC, technically, you use only your racial HDs to calculate your caster level with a Sylph.
And, anyway, the Sylph has pretty good survivality at lower levels. yeah, she loses a bunch of levels, but Outsider HDs aren't bad, and, AFAIK, the Sylph has permanent greater invisibility and fly, which added to the spellcasting makes her pretty playable for a monster with LA 5.

If you have houseruled that she can count her class level as racial HDs for spellcasting, the best you could do is go sorcerer. Getting 2 sorecerer levels each level is awesome.

If you have houseruled that, but you can't surpass your ECL with sorcerer, then I suppose your build is acceptable. I'd have gone with something such as Mindbender 1, Ur-Priest 2, Prestige class X for more spellcasting plus DMM goodnes, though. Because spellcasting is the only protection you will ever need.

Hey! I like spouting lies. It's very entertaining to observe how people on the internet are buffing their small egos by declaring victories over some stupid MBFs. :smirk

I believe the trick is that the monster entry never specified Racial HD.

Sylphs don't advance via character class, either, so technically there's no such thing as a Sylph Monk.

I believe that somewhere specified that when monster entries talk about HD they mean racial HD unless otherwise noted. Again, I am AFB, so I could be wrong.

Anyway, if class levels count for getting sorcerer casting, then you just go sorcerer/Caster PRC all the way and rule the world.

Hmm.   It seems pretty clear ...
1)  Caster Level = Sylph's HD + 4
2)  Any entry with an ECL implies you can take class levels ...

If you can provide text supporting the opposite, I'd be happy to listen.

I'm assuming that sorcerer levels wouldn't stack with Sylph HD for casting - as it is, it's something that someone might actually allow ...

Really, my main question was:  Build/feat choice? & survivability...

Best,
David

googled and got this:
http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19546486/Sylph_Racial_Class

"elondir" says: "Yeah it's in the 3.5 conversion guide. LA +5 +3 racial hit dice = an 8 level class."
I've no way to confirm right now.
The poster that gripes about fly 90' at 2nd level,
doesn't know about Air Elemental's fly 100' at 1st level.

Otherwise ... high skilled Sorc + whatever, looks ok to me.

Man, one of these days we're going to find out that aDMG's posts are these absolutely brilliant treatises on optimization that are being mangled by his content filter.

Also, where did you even find that emoti-whatever-you-want-to-call-it?

Everything gets mangled by my content filter ... or my "other" content filter  ;)
Although, I do wonder where that green face's tongue has been.

The skirt smiley was an accidental find.
I was looking for Ghost-like smiley faces off-site, and misspelled a word.
I'll take it anyway, eh ?!

My 1e MM has a Sylph drawing, that got me detention time ; back in the day.
Smileys = prolly not, regardless.
