Mystic Ranger question
« on: January 24, 2011, 04:28:31 PM »
I'm thinking of making a Mystic Ranger for an up coming game and was wondering if since the concept came out before the Spell Compendium what spells would you add to the 0-level and 5th-level lists?

Just get Sword of the Arcane Order and stop worrying.
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

That would also allow for Arcane Archer

some people say no, because you need 1st lvl arcane spells to get into arcane archer.  sword of the arcane order doesnt exactly say that it give you arcane spellcasting, just wizard spells to cast with your ranger slots.

i feel that they are arcane spells, because they must be cast out of an arcane spellbook, and that it uses intelligence as a casting stat, and finally that it stacks with any wizard levels for caster level.

All that said, simply using them to qualify for Arcane Archer is...

Seriously, just Swift Hunter it if you want to use a bow.

Yeah... don't. That class is horrible. How often would you not have magic arrows or a magic bow anyway?
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
You mean, how often do you get a casting of Greater Magic Weapon or that item from ToM?

I think the point is being able to imbue your arrows with spells.  Which is pretty cool. A two level dip into AA wouldnt suck that bad would it?

Is there a trick to be able to imbue touch spells?

Or you could just buy a spellstoring bow so you don't waste a feat on weapon focus and take 2 levels in a crappy class.

Yeah.  That works too. But depending on the dm's reading of that you might be losing actions to use it... doesnt it take a standard to cast the spell onto the weapon?

However weapon focus is still a waste.  Especially being that you have full bab.

What do you have to imbue though? Also note the range of fireball is already 400ft +40ft/lv.

Three levels of duskbladePHB2 lets you cast and deliver touch spells through your melee attacks (it's a base class, with full BAB and lv1-6 spells with a large number of slots per day). There's a paladin ACF which makes smites ranged-only instead of melee-only. So applying the same change to the DB will get you the simplest arcane archer around.
