Fixed Damage Spells?
« on: July 12, 2008, 06:20:52 AM »
I'm just about to start a new campaign (using the Pathfinder rules), and the DM has decided we'll be using the Unearthed Arcana spell point variant. This makes me happy, because I despise prepared casting, and this way I get to play a wizard for flexibility with the spontaneous casting, too.

However...since damage spells following the XdX/lvl model require the spending of additional spell points to augment their damage over the base value, and my DM is less than fond of save or die/suck, and the UA spell point variant, for some reason, gives far fewer points than, say, the psionicists get, I was wondering...does anyone know of a list of good fixed damage spells, or those whose damage increases at least are fixed rather than adding more dice (like the inflict spells and such)? Pretty much any source is available, and I'm leaning toward a necromancy specialist wizard (since we only have 2 players, both of which will be magic-types, and that will allow me to make meatshields for us), but if cleric has far more/better of this sort of spell available I'd be willing to switch... Thanks in advance!  :)

Well, the first necromancy spell that comes to mind is Enervation.  It doesn't deal damage per se, but each negative level dealt takes 5 HP away from the target.

Other than that, I'd say look for spells that have a higher yield per MP cost.  A minimum Scorching Ray will deal 4d6 damage with no SP increase.  A full 5d4+5 Magic Missile only is increased by 5 SP despite requiring a caster level of nine.

Also, look at some good crowd control spells that deal damage over time.  Some goodies are: Black Tenticles, Wall of Fire, and Acid Fog.

Maw of Chaos? Wings of Flurry? (books are not in front of me, hence the uncertainty)

Sunic may be more abrasive than sandpaper coated in chainsaws (not that its a bad thing, he really does know what he's talking about), but just posting in this thread without warning and telling him he's an asshole which, if you knew his past experiences on WotC and Paizo is flat-out uncalled for. Never mind the insults (which are clearly 4Chan-level childish). You say people like Sunic are the bane of the internet? Try looking at your own post and telling me you are better than him.

Here's a fun fact: You aren't. By a few leagues.

Damage is per CL, thus Maw starts at 17d6 and WoF starts at 9d6

The magic point system seems to favour spells with effects independent of caster lv (and ideally, DC). This way, the spell would still be as useful regardless of whether you cast it at lv20 or lv10 without the need for augmentation. For example, necromancy has waves of fatigue/exhaustion, ideal for debuffing large numbers of foes quickly. Conjuration has solid fog, black tentacles etc. Disjunction is just nasty when you get it. Save-or-suck/die effects can still work at the level you get them. Maybe buff/support spells as well.

Not sure if damage is the best way to go...

Yeah, my DM just isn't fond of save or die/suck and penalty spells, really. But I talked to her about it, and mentioned the point discrepancy between spell points and power points from XPH classes despite the almost identical function of the point-based systems. Rather than modifying it, she told me to just go ahead and use the save or be screwed spells, so I'm gonna go ahead and go that route. I'll still use some damage spells, of course, but mostly fixed damage or ones where the secondary effect is really the draw. And stat-damage spells, of course...if there are any dice/lvl ones out there, I can't think of them offhand anyway. Shivering Touch, here I come!  :D
