SoW Campaign Log

Session 1-

Game group finally has gotten back together. Since all of my previous campaign's materials were lost when my previous computer shot craps, the group decided to give 4E a whirl. Being new to the version, I went looking for a good adventure to run from Dungeon. When I read the Scales of War I immediately got excited about it.

Spending a little time, I converted it to the new FR. Instead of 100 some years in the future for the realms I pushed mine further off more like 500 years from the events of my previous FR campaign. Brindol will be Loudwater. Overlook is replaced by Sundabar and Bordrin's Watch is Citadel Felbar renamed Warcrown's Watch.

My player's having never played 4e before either, began devouring the books we have picked up. Most of our first session was character creation. The party they came up with is as follows;

Ash, Longtooth Shifter Paladin
Vondel, Dwarf Cleric
Baryn, Human Wizard
Niola, Eladrin Warlock
Holgar, Half-Orc Barbarian

Both the Dwarf and Shifter are from the same Dwarf Hold near the Sword Coast. The shifter having been orphaned, then rescued and raised by Vondel's clan. Both are followers of Moradin. Vondel will be part of a side plot I have in mind. All he knows of his family line is that his Great-great-great-grandfather joined the clan under unknown circumstances and Vondel has a small amulet that has been handed down through the generations since. So they journey north following some leads to look into the origins of the amulet arriving in Loudwater enroute to Sundabar.

Baryn and Niola have a connected recent backstory. Niola's fey pact is to a capricious power of the Feywild that has held her sister captive for many years forcing her service for it's own unknown ends. When she steals an item from a magic guild in Silverymoon, Baryn is tasked with capturing her and returning with the item or not returning at all. Niola is able to send the item to the one she serves just before Baryn catches up to her between Loudwater and Evereska. After a quick fight she surrenders and they arrive in Loudwater as a stopover while Baryn figures out how to get back what she took.

Holgar is a distant descendant of two Half-Orc characters of my previous campaign. He is the Bartender at The Green Tankard, the inn all the PCs are staying at. A former mercenary who has settled here after a battle that went wrong. He made his recovery here in Loudwater and took a job at the Tankard intending to settle down here. He has become more restless of late.

I am sure there is a few more details we will be fleshing out at our next session, but everyone is very excited to get to it. None of them have any clue what their in for really. from the moment I read the first two encounters in the first SoW adventure I fell in love with them. I tweaked the first encounter quite a bit by adding a second floor containing the inn rooms and a walkway around and open to the taproom below. I added a third door and back stairwell to the second floor. Two thick support beams run across the open area. Hanging from one is an old standard banner from the Red Fist(yeah changed the name a bit) invasion 50 years previous ( a suggestion from something I read previous about giving the enemies some goal for being inside that paticular inn other than wanton destruction). I am also going to vary where the enemies come in from. Having the first two wave come in the front door, the third wave in from the back door on the first floor. the last wave will appear on the second floor, the goblin lobbing his torch at the card game table below and the hobgoblin with him heading to the beam to cut down the banner.

Since I run my games from Excel to track things I added a worksheet with a sort of map of the inn and a couple formulas to help track where the fires  randomly spread to during the fight. So I expect it to be pretty chaotic once the fire starts spreading to more of the inn.

I played with the second fight a bit too by adding NPCs to get in the way and avoid. I figure when the ogre first appears around the corner a host of npc townsfolk will be fleeing before it and one takes an arrow through the leg at the intersection and falls while carrying his child. Will have the mother near the PCs stop and shout to save her child and husband. Should make for an interesting fight. Ogre bearing down on them while the PCs decide to save the NPCs or get into better positions to fight the ogre.

Will see how they both play out this Thursday.

Session 2

Mostly my Players rounded out their characters and messed around the whole time while they came up with their "wish lists" of items. One player wasn't available and with the holiday approaching, we ended early and decided to begin the adventuring this coming week.

Vondel's and Ash's players are busy coming up with some mis-adventures they had leading up to the story's start. I simply said just somehow end up in Loudwater for the beginning.

In the mean time I have put some finishing touches on the maps I made for the first few encounters. I use Dwarven Forge pieces for dungeons but since these first few occur in town or outdoor locales I needed something else. The first encounter takes place on two seperate maps at the same time. One for the first floor and the other for the second floor with a view of whats going on below. I have the maps made for the Ogre fight next, almost a copy of whats in the adventure. Same with the possible Kruthik encounter. I created a map for the possible Cave Bear encounter which has several narrow paths running along the side of a steep hill with the cave in it.

While most of Rivenroar is going to basically be displayed using my DF pieces. I have begun planning what I am going to use for the second adventure in the SoW path. I have read in several spots of people creating elaborate pieces for the nexus. I will be creating something similar. I have several pieces of PVC in my basement left over from a remodeling project I can use. We'll see what happens when we get closer to that.

Session 3

Session started off with my players finalizing some of the details on their characters, and after a little bit of catching up and screwing around we began the adventure.

Several of my players were at the Green Tankard in Loudwater. Two of my players who were rather poor after the gear they bought and could not afford a standard room rate or meal asked prior to their arrival at the inn if they could find an odd job to make some money. A few untrained streetwise checks later they had several options to choose from. They decided on the easier job of helping some merchants unload their cargo. With money in hand they went off to an inn recommended by the merchant (the same one the rest of the PCs were already at).

Now in fitting SoW into the FR, I used most of Brindol’s features with many of the items from the Loudwater from the FR guide placed. Rather than the Antler and Thistle as the starting locale, I used the Green Tankard. The old storytelling/gossip-monger halfling Marsh Laval is the owner of the place. Baryn and Niola were speaking to him and generally gathering information about the town and areas around it. Holgar continued his normal work behind the bar. Vondal and Ash make their way to a table and are greeted by one of the servent girls, Treidia; they order their food and rooms, then relax near an open window.

I let them mingle and tell me what they are doing for about 15 minutes and about when my players begin to start planning for the following day on going off in separate directions I spring the Bar Fight encounter on them. The Hobgoblins burst through the door and my players are like “huh”, they are in complete shock and the HGs start tearing into the nearest of the inn’s patrons, killing two almost immediately.

Ash gets off a nat20 on init and goes first, which he stands up from his chair and readies his warpick and shield. Then the HGs go and continue to cut a swath through the nearest shocked npc’s, one even grabbing the other serving girl and starts dragging her to the door. Niola goes next, she Fey Steps from her chair to the bar, curses the hobgoblin with the serving girl and Eldritch Blasts him down, teleporting again to the second floor walkway. It’s now that my other PCs notice she is wearing manacles on her wrists. Baryn uses Icy terrain, placing it nicely among the enemies taking out two more. Holgar grabs his axes from under the bar and leaps over the bar and moves toward the last one. The server girl Treidia hucks a mug at the remaining one without much chance of hitting and manages to drop it, while the rest of the patrons I determined start running around trying to escape. Vondral rolling a 1 on his init finally gets to stand up and ready his weapons.

Round 2 Ash moves toward the door and says he looks out the windows to see what else might be coming in. I tell him just what he sees, several more Hobgoblins followed by a goblin with a torch. The torch gets flung behind the bar and immediately catches fire to which both Vondal and Ash cry, “Not the Beer!!!”. Niola, from above curses another HG and drops it with an eyebite teleporting onto part of upper portions of the fireplace in the center of the taproom. Baryn move to behind the bar and looks for something to put out the fire but not finding anything useful to douse it with, he uses the bar for cover though (heheh). Holgar engages the new HGs and drops one of two HGs. The other NPCs try to flee but one makes it to the second floor stairs before round three. Vondral tries lance of faith on an HG and misses.

Ash engages the remaining HG to come through the front doors but misses with his attack. The HG responds to his challenge swinging at him. The goblin scampers under a nearby long table lighting a torch and lobbing it to the other sidewall. It’s at this point the spaces behind the bar erupt into flames engulfing poor Baryn.  More HGs burst in from the backdoor, two of them grabbing Treidia and begin to drag her toward a backroom near the rear entrance (I messed up on init for these guys they were supposed to come in after Holgars turn, but I just remedied it next round). Niola launches an eldritch blast at the nearest HG and gets another teleport to the floor near to Baryn’s position. Baryn moves out from the fire, but is out of the fire and into the frying pan as his escape is cut off by a threatening HG and with Treidia close by a close blast power would not be good so he instead goes with magic missile but misses. Holgar drops the remaining HG up front and moves up to the table to follow the goblin. Vondal tries a lance of faith under the table but misses the goblin.

Ash spends most of his turn moving toward where the HGs have seized Treidia (I have commend them for actually caring about a NPC they just met and does not have much to offer them). The goblin under the table moves out from the side of the long table grabbing a chair as he goes and smashes it over Vondal’s head. The flames from both fires now continue to spread (if I hadn’t done the randomizing and mapping of where the fire spreads each round beforehand this part would have become a nightmare.). The 4th wave makes its appearance, having entered on round 3 instead using the back stairs to the second floor. The goblin among this group flings a torch at the back table with the card game taking out one of the card players that had been attempting to safeguard the money on the table and the other two card players scatter finally. The two HGs on the second floor are also armed with bows. So I had them fire shots down into the fray, hitting Holgar. Niola moves up to assist Ash with the HGs on the first floor. Baryn climbs up the railing of the stairwell to escape the fires that have quickly surrounded him. Holgar moves around the table and strikes at the goblin with the broken chair but misses, and the goblin shifts a square. The remaining hobgoblin in the back of the taproom fights with Ash, while Treidia escapes and runs out the back door. Vondal moves up to the goblin and uses Healing Strike, smacking the goblin to bloodied and beyond while allowing Holgar to use a HS.

Ash attacks his HG and puts it down. The goblin on the ground floor shifts away and then takes off at a run to leave through the front door. The gobbling upstairs lobs another torch on the ground floor and the HGs upstairs move onto one of the support beams from which an old tattered Red Fist banner hangs, their intent is to cut it down and leave with it. Niola launches an eldritch blast at the goblin about to escape and hits him in the back killing him. Baryn starts up the stairs and Holgar swiftly moves across the room and up the stairs. Vondal shouts at the others that this place is going to burn up and heads for the front door. (The original fires have spread quite a bit now).

Ash moves to the stairs. The remaining goblin lobs the last torch at the spot near the top of the stairs and the HGs cut the banner. Niola moves to the table of the card game and sweeps what gold she can into a pouch. Baryn casts magic missile and hits an HG on the beam knocking it off. Holgar bounds through the burning square and hits the goblin pretty hard. Vondal makes it out the front door.

Ash moves up the stairs. Seeing it’s prospects of escape thinning the goblin takes a risk and shifts, then runs off toward a second story window and leaps through which the glass and the landing prove too much for it and it dies on impact just missing Vondal outside. The last hobgoblin tries to move too quick while balancing and falls off, landing hard and smashing a table on the ground floor. The party exits the burning Inn.

Vondal is approached by several guards who look like they too have seen a fight recently. The rest of the party come around front and the surviving patrons form a bucket brigade to put out the flames. I let them exchange words with the guards to find out more of what’s going on to give them a short rest. Then I spring the Ogre on them. I describe a whole slew of townsfolk fleeing around the corner and toward them and the ogre following. While a hobgoblin in the back of wagon shoots a man carrying a child with an arrow. We left this as a cliff hanger, with the Ogre bearing down on the two poor npc’s and no one but the PC’s to handle it.

I am curious if they will risk getting in close with the Ogre to save the npc’s or fight the enemies at a distance.

Session 4

We began right away with the Ogre fight. As soon as I play the music I picked for the Ogre Fight I had the ogre lob a cask their way. It went really wide and only managed to take out 1 guard and a few of the fleeing NPCs without threatening the party at all. But it got the point across. With one of the NPCs shouting about their helpless child and husband down the road, Ash who rolled another amazing init took off at a run to stand his ground before the NPCs. Niola went next moving to a building across the street and then using Fey Step to get up to the top of the building and cursed the on-coming ogre. The ogre lobs another cask and this one misses any party members too. The other hobgoblin in the back of the wagon shoots Ash and crits to drop him just below bloodied. Baryn casts Grease before Ash and the Ogre begins slipping about (which basically locks the Ogre down because anywhere the orge moves Baryn just slides him to where he wants. Vondal uses his Daily on the ogre as well and moves up. Holgar runs to a building near the ogre and climbs the wall to the roof (I am curious what he is planning to do from up there.)

Ash picks up the child and moves him down a side street, puts her down and moves back to the father. The remaining guard moved up to the father and is now helping him off down the same side street. The Ogre gets slid forward by Baryn and into range of Ash, Ash gets smacked with Angry Smash and nearly gets dropped. Niola hits the Ogre with Witchfire and gives him a -5 to hit (yeah we messed up the init order again, the Ogre and Niola were on the same number but she should have gone before). Vondal gets shot with an arrow while not a crit it still got off full damage from the roll. Baryn magic missiles one of the HGs and crits. Vondal uses Healing word on Ash, moves up and casts lance of faith on the ogre. Holgar makes a huge running leap off the building and manages to land in the wagon, just behind the HGs. He hits them with whirling rend, planning to use Thundering Hooves Rage next round instead of spending an action point and using it then.

Ash steps away from the reach of the ogre, knowing now he will likely die standing toe to toe with it.  Niola hits the ogre with Dread Star. Both HGs pull their swords and attack Holgar hitting him pretty hard. The Ogre is slid about but stays on his feet (is immobile too) and lobs the lit cask from the previous round and drops it right next to poor Vondal who drops to 0 HPs in the blast. Baryn used Icy terrain on the ogre and HGs knocking them all prone. Vondal fails his first Death save. Then Holgar unleashes the fury. He crits with Thundering Hooves Rage and dropping that target uses Whirling Lunge to step up and crack the ogre and other HG. I wish I would have recorded the total amount of damage he pulled off in that round.

Ash moves over to Vondal and LoH’s him to get him back up. Niola misses with Eldritch Blast. The Ogre is able to stand but lacking a cask and no one to really hit he can only move forward on the slippery terrain. The remaining HG attacks from prone in the wagon but misses Holgar. Baryn drops a Cloud of Daggers in the prone HGs square. Vondal heals himself. Holgar uses Whirling Frenzy on the Ogre and HG but misses the HG applies his Half Orc racial ability for the extra weapon damage taking the Ogre out.

Ash feeling left out of most of the action rushes toward the wagon to hopefully get in the final hit on the HG in the wagon but as soon as he hits the Grease he falls prone (and just to be funny Baryn’s player slid him backward 2 squares). Niola couldn’t finish the HG off either(much to her dismay since she wanted to teleport off the roof rather than have to climb down after). Holgar managed to finally silence the HG with another Whirling Rend.

Good thing Baryn didn’t use his daily spell earlier on the previous fight. Without it they would have been toast (they aren’t ones to run away very often). Baryn’s other daily is Flaming Sphere and I could see he was lamenting his choice to pick Grease instead when the party was saying, “Does anyone have a fire ability?” hehe. (I am aware Witchfire is a fire based ability but I wasn’t about to hand them that answer)

After another short rest, the party was quickly approached by more guards heading for the bridge to retake it. I could see the players visibly shrink as all but Ash had used quite a few resources during the fight, but off they went. They were suitably relieved when they saw that the invaders were slinking off into the night. Enter their competition. A party of adventurers that I hinted at when they first arrived in town and were looking for rumors. They have retaken the bridge. Now I don’t intend on having them come to blows, but I do want them under the party’s skin a little and I plan on incorporating some of them later on.

The party spends the rest of the next day helping tend wounded, put out any other fires, and clean up. They also try to contact Councilman Troyas about the rumor they heard earlier of his intention to use adventurers to safeguard the region. When they return to the half burnt inn they find that they have been invited as one of the many honorable guests to a costume gala event thrown by Lady Moonfire (something else they had learned of on their arrival in town).

So they set about selecting what they will go as. Vondal deciding he will go as a Cask of Stout borrowing a barrel from the Inn. Somehow, someway, his characters always end up in a barrel (a funny story turned running joke of how that started will follow).  Then even invite a couple NPCs to accompany them, Treidia being one of them (I think the PTSD from nearly having a hobgoblin train pulled on her has caused her to be drawn to her rescuer’s feral good looks and gallant ways). Since none of them decide to find out info post assault on the town, I move time along a bit.

Night of the ball arrives and they all set out. After some mingling, Ash spots the Tiefling leader of their competition wooing Lady Moonfire. He attempts to listen in but is waylaid by Councilman Troyas, who would like to speak in private with the PC’s. They play out the skill challenge quickly and succeed perfectly. They not only gain the job but also easier access to the prisoner, after asking if there were any enemies taken alive (of course they never thought to leave any alive).

We ran out of time to play through the Interrogation so that will be picked up next week.

Had to put off last two sessions. Two weeks ago I had to work late (and I found out one of my players was in jail). Then tonight's session was a bust after the snow storm we just had kept one of my other players busy at his job for like 48 hours straight. We'll be back at it next week.

Session 5

Took a while to get back to it, players been busy with RL. So these updates will be random but we are continuing to meet. Last nights session was short as we all played catch up from the past several weeks. One of my players made an awesome dinner for us all. On to the update.

The left off ready to interrogate the hobgoblin prisoner. Vondal attempts a diplomacy and succeed but part of what he was suggesting was that he tell him what he knew or he would have no choice but to turn him over to his more unruly companions. So Ash and Holgar rolled intimidate checks to look menacing. They were hoping for a quick 3 successes, but they both failed and closed off intimidate. Morrick spits at them and holds out. eventually they fail the challenge but wind up with a map.

They decide to head out the next day. They have a rough time of it durin the next skill challenge too and run afoul a cave bear. The battle map I created was on a steep hillside with several paths on it. The one they started on ran past the cave. I explained earlier that these hills were riddled with caves so after a while they stopped checking them all. The cave bear stormed out and bull rushed Vondal. Nearly over the ledge but he made his save and was worse off.....prone at the bear's feet. The bear ended up with a high init and proceeded to frenzy with Ash, Vondal, and Baryn close by. Ash Divine Challenges the bear and strikes with bolstering strike but misses. Niola Fey Steps and appears on the pathway above the cave. Curses the bear and hits it with Dread Star (locking it in place, doing some decent damage, and giving it a minus 2 to will). Vondal goes next. He gets up, uses Healign word on Baryn (who was thrashed by that frenzy), and then swings at it with Healing strike but misses. Holgar flies into Thundering Hooves rage but doesn't do much damage with the initial strike. Baryn backs up a square and is handcuffed by the narrow path and the proximity of his companions so he just uses cloud of daggers.

The bear slashes at Ash but fails to get past his armor. Ash pulls out Paladin's Judgment but once again his dice aren't with him and its another miss. Niola hits the bear with Witchfire. Vondal slides over a square to back up next round in order to bring his ranged powers out and simply swings at the bear with his warhammer. Holgar dishes out some more decent damage on the bear with his encounter power. Baryn simply tosses a magic missile at the bear still lacking the space needed for his other powers.

This is where the bear starts laying the smack down, frenzy recharged so he unleashes it again (which drops Ash), uses an action point and attacks Vondal nearly dropping him too. Niola plugs away with Eldritch Blast. Vondal now has his back to the steep decline with the path 20 ft below. He uses his second healing word to help Ash and swings again at the bear. Holgar hits the bear from behind again. Baryn sends another MM at the bear.

Unfortunately for the party the bears frenzy refreshes again and before poor ash can even stand himself back up he is trounced to near death. The damage took out Vondal too. Niola, Holgar, and especially Baryn are like "Uh Oh". No tank, no cleric, Holgar is hurting and Baryn is far too close to hope to run away from the bear. Niola hits the bear with eyebite (knowing she could easily survive this, something about not having to out run the bear but simply being able to outrun Baryn). Holgar desperately swings at the bear doing more damage. Baryn chucks and prays another magic missile at the bear.

Holgar falls to the bear's next attack and turns toward Baryn. Conscience gets the better of Niola and she launches one last Eldricth Blast killing it off before the bear would run over the wizard. They stabilize their companions and they spend the night in the bears cave, dine on beer braised bear (we had braised short ribs that evening so it was rather fitting) and set out the next day following the tracks and map.

At this point it was getting late so we called it right as they were traveling down a path flanked on either side by high ridges. It was very little surprise when the bug-like Kruthiks crawled from their hole in the ground ahead.

Session 6

We got a couple hours of play in this week when we were able to all get together. In picking it up with the fight with the Kruthik's it tossed them right back into things. Holgar waded in and was nearly knocked to 0 and stayed low on hp's perpetually throughout the fight. Niola played it smart and teleported up on one of the ridges launching attacks from relative safety. Ash's player continued his bad run with dice. Along with falling into one of the Kruthik's warrens and being unable to get out, he also rolled 3 ones in a row during the fight. But he did finally kill something and he was ecstatic about, even if it was just a minion.....

The fight took a lot out of them so they spent the night in the warren they had stumbled upon. They conversed among themselves for a bit, RPing more about their pasts. When morning came, they climbed out and continued on their way.

The made the ruins without further incident and Niola was sent down first to scout out what they might find (she is fairly stealthy). Upon her return she told them what awaited them at the bottom of the stairs, and with decent stealth rolls from everyone they got the drop on the Hobgoblin and Goblins guarding the entry chamber. Rolling well, they managed to tear into the hobgoblins. After the surprise and first whole round activities, they had the Hobgoblins nearly bloodied and the Goblins unable to much else but shoot. Baryn used his Grease daily and kept the enemies mostly controlled the whole fight even getting the hobgoblins subjected to the mobile hazard flame several times. One goblin, low on health managed to escape and flee through a door and down another dark stairwell. Holgar made to follow but stopped up short when it got too dark for him. As he made his way up, I had the goblin shoot him again and run off. Oh man, was he fuming; player was uttering all sorts of things about once he got his hands on the goblin.

Unfortunately we ran out of time to keep going, but the players have been discussing it a lot since the game about which ways they should go when we get back together so it should be soon.
