Healer: Minor Revamp
« on: November 24, 2010, 02:28:18 AM »
Medium BAB.

All good saves.

Healer knows all spells on his list.

He casts spontaneously like a Sorcerer using the Healer's original spells per day table.

The ket stat for the Healer is Charisma (for at least SOME synergy with his abilities).

Is it enough to bring the guy up to at least some semi-usefulness?

Do they get spells beyond those of the Healer list?
Other than some of the healing ones in later splat books, no.

What do you have in mind?

Things like defensive buffs, walls, aggressive buffs (to help others mostly, much like a Bard's Dragonfire), locomotion, dispelling..

Pretty much everything a cleric has except summoning and outright attack spells.

That would bump the tier up.

Defensive buffs to prevent damage would be reasonable, but walls and aggressive buffs would compromise the idea of the Healer (passive, preventing of hurts, healing, do no harm type of guy), I think.

You'd need SOME aggression I think, and walls are one way to do it.
I'd personally have gone for debilitating status effects, focusing on paralysis, sleep and other nonlethal disables that fit with the medical nature.

They're a support class. Battlefield control is support.

Imagine dividing the enemy casters from battle so that the warriors aren't harassed.
Imagine splitting an enemy force in half.
Imagine keeping the BBEG alone with the party grappler and Rogue.

It's support.

Actually, Healers are very NARROW support. That is why they suck. I am trying to not change their focus too much. They are removers of damage, with some protective abilities (i.e., defensive buffs). Battlefield control is not supposed to be part of their "thing". They are medics, not heavy weapons specialists...

I mean, from curing status effects(removing blindness, paralysis, exhaustion, nausea, etc) to inflicting them.

Walls are a very obvious protection.  If the pain is on the other side of the wall, you're nopt dealing with it.
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

Walls are iffy, but can be accepted.

Direct hurting via poisons and the like is a straight out "not to theme".

Shell and Protect of the FF White Mage, anyone? Pretty much DR and some kind of "Magic Resistance". We need that.. universal energy reduction spell(s).

Rope trick is safer than a campsite, but the hole is assailable if it can be located. Though with it being invisible and up to 30 feet in the air both are difficult.
