Just wanted to mention the spell Wind's Favor (druid 3) from Magic of Eberron, "often used to proper a sailing craft".

Perfect sphere.  Push the top half into the AMF (or rotate the top ones so they're pointing down.

Doesn't levitate only move things up?
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.

Right... I was basing it off a spaceship design from '05 or '06, which obviously didn't have gravity.

You could still probably work something out with gears, though, given that we're screwing with conservation of momentum anyway.

Nah, if the left side is being lifted and the right side is falling, it will rotate.
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
[spoiler]Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

Well, yeah, but if the gear's rotating you can hook it up to a mechanism and drive a propellor or something

Oh, I forgot, "Just add sails to whatever" is an option, though I don't like it!

A Skeletal Soarwhale, preferably with increased strength somehow (Corpse Crafter?) can house quite a bit inside the skeleton.  Put leather armor on it and it's fully covered.  Put some Black Sand in it and it heals itself.   Basically, it's a giant skeleton.

Note that the decanter thing would have easy to aim thrust, as it's small and you could basically use vectored thrust.

Another option is to use a chamber with permanent Reverse Gravity.  Have an axle running along it so that it's half in the antigravity section, half in the normal section, and this axle should flare out like a giant cone, such that pulling the axle forward or back changes how much mass is getting rotated by gravity.  At the end of this shaft is the propeller.  You now have a gravity based propeller drive.

One of the Dragon Magazines had an option you could built into constructs:  Rudimentary Intelligence.

Make your flying construct smart, while not making it free-willed.

How are you animating one of these? They have 32 HD. Animate Dead caps out at 20.

The Skybleeder from the Fiend Folio might be a decent monster to animate for a smaller ship. They're only huge sized, with 12 hit dice. A huge-sized creature could fit inside an Enveloping Pit if it was squeezing... which in my book is a huge benefit. :D

[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

IIRC, the elixir of the unfailing servant doesn't have a HD cap.

Fharlanghn's Lines reduce the crew needed to pilot a wind powered ship by five for each set of lines (to a minimum of two for Colossal ships and one for smaller ships). This can even be used for airships from Eberron since Eberronian airships can be powered by air elementals. :D
