: New mods?
: PhaedrusXY November 02, 2010, 03:37:30 AM
Hi,
Would it be possible to add a couple of moderators, at least for opening new sections for games in the Play by Post section? We've been waiting for days to start at least one new game in there.
: Re: New mods?
: Prime32 November 02, 2010, 07:20:35 AM
Seconding this.

Though I think modifying the structure of the forum would require an admin account.
: Re: New mods?
: Agita November 02, 2010, 10:20:16 AM
Well, there are some backup mods. Did you PM TheChrisWaits? Aside from the PbP section, the boards seem to be doing pretty well with little supervision.

Also, in before altpersona. :P
: Re: New mods?
: veekie November 02, 2010, 11:56:40 AM
Well, mostly PbP just needs someone with enough permission to open new sections and who spends enough time online.

Yes. Bears PMd him several days ago.

Yes. I think we have plenty of candidates...

Kevin PMed him also for a forum and we are still waiting too.

Bowen has been MIA for a while, though. I guess he had enough of a headstart on you to keep his second place. :P

By 2 days. If I wanted, I could beat him the same way I unlocked Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. :p
AfterCrescent was the next entry on that list...

I'd be willing to wear the mod hat, as long as I don't have to do anything outside PbP.

It seems like that'd be more or less all you'd have to do. Very few discussions here get to the point where a mod needs to step in.

It's like someone stepped in to say "Why can't we all just get along?" took a look at the board and said: "Oh, never mind. Carry on."

I know nothing about being a mod (I never had to create a subsection, the most I did was sticky threads and such).

: Re: New mods?
: Meg November 03, 2010, 12:17:16 PM
I'm absolutely up for adding more mods, especially to the Pbp area.  Prime volunteered, anyone else?

Also- I'd like you to weigh in on the volunteers.  Anyone have feelings on Prime (or anyone else that volunteers) one way or the other?  It has to be someone trustworthy as they'll get access to modifying the boards, and someone worth listening to cause they will be a mod, so I want to make sure they say the right things.
: Re: New mods?
: Vynar November 03, 2010, 12:30:31 PM
I nominate the very next person to register as they are the one sent to us by powers beyond our control.

But yeah I at least have no reason to believe that Prime would be a bad choice.

However, if you need someone to go insane and power trip over something so small being a moderator who opens new forums on PBP and ruin everyone's day until struck down about 15 minutes later, I am willing to make that sacrifice so that everyone has something to talk about for a day or two. :P

But the one thing to take away from this nonsensical post, is I don't see anything wrong with the people brought up so far.
: Re: New mods?
: RelentlessImp November 03, 2010, 12:32:25 PM
I'll volunteer for PbP patrol, though my rep is nowhere near as good as Prime's. Also, I think Prime would be a good candidate, since he's weighed in on our current issues pretty solidly down in the PbP forum.
: Re: New mods?
: archangel.arcanis November 03, 2010, 12:46:59 PM
I think Prime is a good choice as well. RestlessImp and Vynar both haven't been around for too long so I can't really from a solid opinion on either one yet.

If you still want some help in PbP I can do it as I'm normally here from 8-5 M-F and erratically on the weekends. Plus I'm used to the work of a Mod as i do it on another forum as well. Besides here isn't that bad to mod as others have said people mostly handle it themselves.
: Re: New mods?

I could do it, also, as long as it doesn't take much time. I'm on here pretty much daily, for short periods.

Speaking of new mods, the (whole, not only PbP) boards could use a couple. I might understand the hesitation in baning users, but I don't understand how some of the posts aren't deleted or moderated. I don't even mean the vulgarity or spam (at least the entertaining ones), but it strikes me as odd that, for example, insulting other users is allowed. I skimed through the CoC when I registered and I saw that it ISN'T allowed. So... I don't understand how the moderation in here is working. Not enough time to do your job?
I offered myself, but I get it that I'm not long enough on the boards and I don't have many posts, contributing ones to boot. But come on, there should be someone else who could do that. Agita, JaronK, Sinfire Titan, veekie, Lycanthromancer? Anyone?

The BGs have made it clear that they take a hands off approach to most situations and let the posters handle it themselves. The general rule is don't be a douche, so you can get away with a lot as long as you are right or don't cross a vague line in the sand (the line isn't spelled out but most people know it before they cross it). For the most part this works out pretty well overall. I know there are some people who will annoy me or piss me off when they post, but as an adult I either ignore them or don't let them get to me.

If only it would be so easy... :(
I'm probably to much accustomed to strict moderation from my native boards. It's my problem but... still, it's sad how things are handled here... Why even create a CoC when you don't enforce it... It's too much for my simple mind.
The general rule is don't be a douche

This. In the time I've spent on the boards (i.e. since the first great 339 exodus), there were three permanent bans that I remember well (not counting scores of spambots): OneWinged4ngel, Ubernoob, and AndyJames.
The first made himself a pain in the ass to the BGs themselves, specifically Meg, for a good while before being banned.
The second had a modus operandi similar to what people are complaining about in Sunic now, but kept it up for a longer time before finally being judged not worth the trouble. I'm not sure what the last straw was here, but I think it was the BGs getting complaints about podcast listeners being turned off from the podcast itself by the climate on the boards. This is the one I remember the least, however.
The third openly attacked and mocked opposing ideologies as well as people who defended them, and went on for a long time as well. The final straw was a personal attack on a poster's recently deceased mother that had nothing to do with the topic on hand, as I recall.

As you can see, it takes a lot to get yourself banned around here, and in each case I'm pretty sure there was a 'last straw' that pushed things across the line. BG isn't GitP, or even WotC, and this is important to keep in mind. More mods don't matter much when the climate rarely gets actually bad enough for them to step in. It's not that there aren't enough to do the job, it's that it's an emergency job.

The best way to do things is simply ignore trolls, they crave attention.
Just keep up the civil talk and not fall into temptation, or wind up as One Of Them.

Theres really very little that needs outright mod intervention(thread splitting or post garbaging mostly). Things like being rude are their own punishment, once people start dismissing you automatically. The line is roughly drawn at personal attacks, IIRC.

Or you could take it in stride, like... most of the posters. Complaining about lack of moderation on a board where one of the draws is less moderation than elsewhere is kind of like drinking alcohol-free beer and complaining that it doesn't have alcohol.

No no no.

That is the wrong approach entirely.

Speak UP. Let yourselves be heard.

But remember the old internet saying... Mods = Gods.

Don't waste your time praying when there is work to be done! Take your fate in your own hands. Ask questions, send PMs, stand up to spam and trolls.

But most importantly, contribute and grow.

Secondly, be right!  ;)

Also, while we're on the subject, I still miss all those that have been banned. They were all arrogant douches, but just as Sunic, they usually were constructive about it and were also valuable posters when not being douches.

bg stands out specifically for not being draconian (or maybe pun pun ian (sees all, knows all, isnt lame like a draconian)). GitPG and Gleemax offer active moderation.

GitPG is a great place to find all the banter and extreme moderation.

Gleemax is a great place to find moderation and mediocrity.

I think you will find that except for the off topic boards things stay fairly civil (similar to being at a gaming table) around here. the off topic boards can get feisty, but usually not very.

you do not have to be quiet and wait for better days. if you see someone acting up, call them out. no ones gonna knock on your door and punch you in the nose. just tell em to take it elsewhere.

as long was there are bridges there will be trolls. just dont feed em and they wont bother you much.

Just because it wasn't acted on doesn't mean it was ignored.

But again, stop waiting for mods. They will come and tidy up in their own time. Until then take responsibility for acting as you see fit. Just remember that if you become an intolerable douche and persist at it, you had better also have a lot to contribute.  ;)

Be better than them. Don't troll back or flame back. Stick to the topic like the offensive post never existed. Why waste time on trolls(unless you're bored and have nothing better to do, then I rest my case).

Be constructive. Be knowledgeable. Ask questions if you're not.

And take pride in being the one best able to ignore obvious flame-bait.

Or better yet, take the bait without flaming yourself, respond and defeat the point soundly and we all grow as a result.

1)Tell the person they are being a douche and why.
2)Tell them they are wrong and why.
3)Ignore them because no matter what you say they will be a wrong douche. follow the "don't argue with an idiot, because an onlooker won't be able to tell the difference"
4)throw insults at them and spout memes that no one knows/cares about. (Only works for some people)
5)proceed to make constructive comments pertaining to the current or original subject as appropriate and let them be confused why you didn't feed the troll.

pick a few of the above and use them.

: Re: New mods?
: Meg April 25, 2011, 05:07:17 PM
First off, let me take this opportunity to give a giant shout out to Prime32- I honestly don't know what we would've done without him on the boards lately. He is really the only active mod right now, and even went so far as to call out this thread to me to chime in on.  So kudos and thank you.

I'm going to address a couple of points, but I think most of you made the points for me.  Again, thank you.

I believe in the hands off community- mostly because when I was active on WotC, even as a mod, I got really frustrated that people weren't allowed to be given the chance to solve their own problems.  I believe that if the problem CAN be solved by the people involved, it's healthier for them and the forums.

An example- I manage a group of people at work (my real work). If one comes to me and says "I didn't like that Annie did X!" I respond with "Did you talk to Annie?"  "No..." "Ok, then I can help you figure out how you'll talk to her, what words to use, and how to clarify your issue, but you need to talk to her yourself. And I'm going to follow up with you at the end of the week to make sure you did."

Every now and then people aren't mature enough or professional enough to figure it out themselves. That's when other measures come in.

Here's the Hierarchy of Moderation for the BG boards:
1. Moderate yourself. Be professional. Be mature. Would you say this at the gaming table? Are you being a decent human being?
2. Others just ignore Poster X's bad behavior. We all have bad behavior at one time or another, and maybe this is Poster X's first time being doucy.  Maybe he's having an off week.  Ignore him.
3. Posters moderate Posters. See all of the advice above- you guys know what you want, tell Poster X to knock it off and tell him why his behavior is douchy. Send some PMs. Do it in context, point of "service".
4. Report the post and the mods step in
5. Report the post and Meg steps in

I'm the LAST resort, the last step when everything else has failed. Deal with it yourself if you can, use us if you can't.

Another thing to note though- don't feel like you shouldn't use the Report button. That's all I go by, honestly. Prime is around, but all I read are those reports for the most part. If I suddenly get 3 reports on the same thread, you can bet your butt I'll check it out. Same goes if some of the names that I respect and WANT to have a good time here report the thread- their voice is more important to me. I want this to be their community and if something is pissing them off, I'll check it out. It's not favoritism, it's giving power to the people who have put the time in and proven themselves, so do that and I'll listen to you too.

Finally- here's a general list of my priorities, in order, in life in terms of what I spend the most time on (not counting eating, sleeping, etc)...
1. My job - I'm an executive and work a bunch of hours.
2. My daughter
3. My husband
4. Twitter
5. Our podcast
6. Video games
7. TV
8. Weekly game night
9. Spur of the moment games
10. Facebook
11. Family
12. The dog
13. Farting around on my ipad
14. These boards
15. Staring out the window
16. Reading magazines in the doctor's office

I used to be a total forum-whore.  Twitter sort of replaced that. I don't spend much time here at all, so don't feel like I'm ignoring you... it's just so low on my priority list.

That being said- if you ever want to get ahold of me- if you've sent a report and it's gone unnoticed or if there is something abrewin' that you think I should step in for- send me a PM or a Twitter. PM's go to my email so I get them and twitter is a great way to talk directly with me. @bg_meg

Does that help?
: Re: New mods?
: archangel.arcanis April 25, 2011, 05:13:25 PM
Thanks for the reply Meg. Perhaps a sticky of the moderation guidelines somewhere here in the Meta Board would help in the future so people know what is expected of them and that the Mods aren't here to tell Johnny to quit shooting spitballs.

I see... So there can be nothing done here... I (and some other users) just have to be quiet and wait for better days...

Yes yes yes! Stand up! Speak up! If it's important, say something! We can't help what we don't know needs help.

On the other hand, if you are too whiny, we WILL ignore you. So there's that.

Each one of those bans was really thought about, as was Sunic's that I just put through (for a 4th time).  BECAUSE they were good contributers. If it was just up to me, they would've each happened sooner but I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision.

Here's how I decide to ban someone-- if they are more trouble than they are worth- for me but moreso for the rest of the boards. Are they contributing enough to make up for their bad behavior? For a while Uber definitely did.  But then it just got bad and I thought the whole community would be brought down if they were allowed to continue their negative behavior.

I miss Uber. The others- I think the boards are better off without them, and that's what it comes down to when I decide to ban someone.

Oh!  But, one important note- I'd still like 1 more generalist mod. It's a lot for Prime to do on his own, and he really is doing it on his own now. 2 voices also are better to check with each other that they're making the right choices and to challenge each other.  So ideally, someone with a fairly different viewpoint from Prime so they can engage in healthy debate.

It doesn't need to be someone on all the time. That's fine.

If interested:
-- you must have presented yourself extremely maturely
-- you must be respected by members here
-- you should be "elected" by your peers

So if anyone is interested, I'll start a new thread for it.

I see... So there can be nothing done here... I (and some other users) just have to be quiet and wait for better days...
Or you could take it in stride, like... most of the posters. Complaining about lack of moderation on a board where one of the draws is less moderation than elsewhere is kind of like drinking alcohol-free beer and complaining that it doesn't have alcohol.
Yeah, I tried that. Just see my latest posts. It's just not easy and I would like to avoid simple trolling and spaming. Unfortunatly I don't have anything worthwile to post...
Giving up to trolls is a lousy idea. Far as my experience goes, they can be ignored and they tend to stop their spamming when they get no attention.

Edit: Forgot to say this: Usually if there is a troll roaming the forum you do not have to argue with them alone. If you feel someone is being an asshole on purpose you can be sure that others notice it as well and many users react rather strongly to that kind of behaviour.
: Re: New mods?
: Sinfire Titan April 26, 2011, 12:01:18 AM

You forgot Slate, but he was incredibly minor and his account deleted outright.

It doesn't need to be someone on all the time. That's fine.
