    * Thursday, 8/13 3:00
    * Marriott : Indiana Bllrm B

Join the hosts of the podcast Brilliant Gameologists and learn what words will bring out the worst emotions in people and will counter the real message you are trying to convey- either names you could call players (Munchkin, Powergamer, Drama Queen, Rules Lawyer, Meta-gamer) or whining to your GM (It’s not fair! It’s not realistic! You are railroading us!). Learn alternatives to name calling that are just as fun and send the message you mean.

    * Embassy Suites : Chancellor I

The Brilliant Gameologists Podcast: Educated type folks who talk about the science of games, gamers, and gaming. Interested? Join the hosts of the in a facilitated “roundtable” discussion about gameology, the industry, and nerd-a-rific, jargon-tastic fun.

    * Saturday 8/15 11:00-12:00
    * Embassy Suites : Chancellor 1

Can RPG’s be rated? Can they be classified as “good” or “bad”? How subjective/ objective can a review be? Is a RPG review a summary, or is critical analysis possible? Join the hosts of the podcast Brilliant Gameologists who are driven to answer these questions and help sway the argument one side or the other.

SEM0903106: The Airing of Grievances

I wanna go!!! :D

Crap. Now I have to start researching and figuring things out.  Anyone want to recommend airlines and/or hotels? :P
: Re: GenCon '09
: Meg April 23, 2009, 10:39:46 PM
For hotels, there is a group of us that have over reserved, so space is available to share or take off someone's hands.

For flights, I love kayak.com.  It gives you great prices.  Note that some airlines like southwest don't advertise on any of the discount sites though.

I'm also using Yapta- put in your route and it tracks when the price drops.  Right now I'm expecting to pay about $200 RT for my airline ticket from Boston, so not bad.
: Re: GenCon '09
: AfterCrescent April 23, 2009, 10:45:50 PM
Sweet. I'll look into kayak.com... Also, expect to be contacted when I find out if BimR can go, or if it'll just be me. :D

Good times.  I've left room in my schedule to make it to the Salon (I think) and the seminar on Critiquing game systems.

Hope to see you guys there!

Not this year, but I'm 75% certain that next year will be better.

There is a good chance this may be my last GenCon for a while...  I hope not, but the chance is there.

The Airing of Grievances time has changed from 1:00 on Saturday to 3:00 due to a time conflict with a podcast panel.

Podcast Panels- many of which we'll be on- can be found here:

The good news is I get to go to GenCon.

The bad news is All my events so far overlap the BG seminars and I wanted to check them out, especially the 7 Words one.

I'll have to scribble down the seminar times and if anything happens to my events I'll come around and check them out.

Hopefully this won't be your last GenCon either.

I keep telling myself that I'll go to GenCon, but always end up spending all my money at MegaCon.  Maybe next year I'll skip it and just save up for this.

Okay, I can afford to go! Yay! :D

I have to make sure I have the time off from work (doing that Monday). Flight's about $200, coming in Wednesday night and leaving Sunday.  Where are people staying, and does anyone need a roommate or two?  :flirt BimR may be coming with me *crosses fingers*.  Once I can figure out where/with who I'm staying, I can get registered for events and stuff. YAY! :D  I'm very excited. :D :D

I have my money situation mostly straightened out, by next year I'll have all my debt paid off save student loans and I will have more pocket money.

I may actually go to Gencon this year.  I'll be on a budget (don't want to spend more than 250 bucks for the whole thing if I can; I went to A-kon for 150 or so with two thirds of that being merch), but I'll make it.  Hopefully with my brother.  I think my uncle should hook us up with a free room if we can pay for gas to get there.

That's awesome!  Room is definitely the biggest cost, next is food.  If you can do both for ultra cheap, you may be in a good spot.

How long of a drive would that be?

I'm certainly looking forward to it. I still have to find a decent printer for the cards though. *sighs* Someone who isn't going to charge me an arm and a leg. The "boards" are more like poster-maps that I can actually print at work. Printing and cutting the cards is an entirely different matter, however.

From Texas (DFW area) to indy.  Google says 14 hour drive.

If you want a hotel on the covered walk, expect to pay out the arse.  If someone else is paying for you, ask for something close to the center  :smirk .

Seriously, hotel rooms drop literally about 100 bucks a night a mile away from the con center.  Also, park your car at the hotel and don't freaking move it until you leave unless you have to.

Get a growler of Total Disorder Porter from the Ram.  It's a flavorful dark beer with a hint of coffee.  Great stuff.  Plus, you get a cool bottle to take it home in.

Watch out though, there's some crazy people in Indianapolis.  One time, a crazy street person chased me in my car for three blocks.  Another time, my brother was harassed by a different crazy street person for hours, and he was in a huge group.

And like all cities, the ghetto is literally one street away from where all the businesses and stuff are.  But if you're an urban dweller, that's not a shock.

You fuckers better have extra fun while you're there to make up for the fact that I can't go.   :P

If anyone has a chance to do True dungeon, it's worth a try.

The Gamer Olympics is always fun, I also recomend that.

If Looney Labs is running "I am Not A Werewolf", I also highly recomend that, it's fun.  Just watch your time, my brother did it for 20 hours straight a couple years ago.

Also, my buddy Nate showed me a fun thing to do at Gencon four years ago:  When walking by the Palladium booth, yell "CLAP IF YOU WANT RIFTS D20!" when there's a line there.

Our GenCon Summary...

Wednesday - Got into Indy late afternoon. Settled in with friends we were staying with. Went to register. Got there half hour before they closed. Were warned in the parking lot that they were turning people away because the lines were too long. Went in anyway. Sailed through the almost non-existent line. Picked up sponsor swag bag (unimpressed). Went to track down Meg, Josh, etc. Found Josh on the way to get snacks. Met AC, BimR, SDK, CW, CW's girlfriend and Woodrow (possibly more). Hung out until midnight. Met Robert Bohl and a few of the other podcasters.

Thursday - Early breakfast with friends of friends @ Red-Eye Cafe. Bumped into a couple of friends of GenCons past. Dealer hall. Starbucks. Reverse Forum for Podcasters seminar. Met Dan2. More dealer hall. Lunch with friends and friends of friends @ Alcatraz. More dealer hall. 7 Words You Can't Say While Gaming seminar (rocked). A Salon on Gameology seminar (also rocked). Home for the evening. Heard gunfire around 11pm followed by sirens somewhere in the neighborhood (eek!). More gunshots around midnight.

Friday - Slept through breakfast. Wandered the art show where we bumped into Zeke and meandered around for a bit. Headed to the D&D 4th ed seminar. Left aforementioned seminar because they had booked a ridiculously small room and there was nowhere to sit (screw them and their "there's another one tomorrow"). Saw BimR in costume (Wow). Lunch with AC, BimR, SDK, CW, Woodrow and others @ mall food court. More wandering the dealer hall. Picked up Shadowrun 20th anniversary ed. Home for the evening. No gunfire (Yay!).

Saturday - Breakfast with friends and friends of friends @ Cafe Patachou (excellent waffles). Starbucks. On the Critical Analysis of Games seminar (very interesting). Shadowrun seminar (lots of vagueness but very excited to play now). Lunch with friends and friends of friends @ Steak & Shake (finally!). Airing of Grievances seminar (introduced a friend of a friend to the BG phenom). Home to get ready for White Wolf party (don't ask, it wasn't our idea). White Wolf party. Escape from White Wolf party (we were there about a half hour). Hung out with Meg, Josh, AC, BimR, etc. and played...something...while we waited for our friends to be done with the White Wolf thing. Steak & Shake (again) with Meg, Josh, Zeke, RB, Adam, etc. Friends done with White Wolf party, and completely wasted. Drove them to a different Steak & Shake so they could sober up a bit. Drove home (yes, me driving...strange car, strange city).

Sunday - Late start. More dealer hall. Goodbye lunch with BG 'family' @ PF Changs. Last wander around the dealer hall. No deals found. Home to play some Shadowrun.

I will remember GenCon '09 as:

Fighting to keep back tears and sobbing the entire time.
Met so many people that it become too many people and overwhelmed me at a couple of points
Got to spend time with some very good looking men
Got to spend too much time with different men's nutsacks
My boobs are growing at what I think is an exponential rate and kept busting out
Werewolf/ Chthulu mafia game over and over and over and over... and every one was fun
ACTION CASTLE!!!
Panels... my god, the panels... they never ended...

Adam from Podgecast flashed his nutsack. I only had it happen to me once. I'm made to understand that wasn't the only time, nor was he the only one doing it.

Nothing beats Zeke's drunken stare at Rob Justice's nut sack. As everyone turns away from him, Zeke stares, and since everyone else in the room was between the two, it was that much more apparent. And hilarious. :lmao

What happens in hotel rooms is most definitely not family friendly.

It started with Rob from the Bear Swarm wearing shorts with a giant hole in the crotch and no underwear.  This led to ball slippage to which he dialed up by intentional ball exposure.  He sat with his balls hanging free for a significant portion of the evening.

Seeing the attention Rob's balls were getting, Adam from The Podgecast felt the need to prove his manliness and also pulled out his balls the following night.

The best was while we were playing Werewolf, everyone had his/her eyes closed and Adam was the giver.  He said, "Werewolves, open your eyes.... choose a victim... Close your eyes... Seers, open your eyes..." and so on.  All the while he had his pants down and his ass right in some poor guy's face, so everyone who was a role had to work at not laughing and giving away their status when they opened their eyes secretly and saw what was happening.

Brant from the TrapCast utterly failed that that one which made it even funnier.

That was great.  We all saw and groaned and turned our heads and shielded our eyes.  Zeke was sitting directly across from Rob and tilted his head, mouth agape and stared, curiously, and the sight we were all trying to avoid.

The people I met/ re-met at GenCon:

BG Folks:
Re-Met:
Kai with her husband Chris: Awesome as always.  We haven't seen this pair in person in... 4 years? but I feel like it both has been longer and no time at all.  Neither have changed- I'm pretty sure Chris's outfits were the same as the last time I saw him, and I always adore spending time with cool chicks, of which Kai is definitely one.  Wish we had more time together or could spend time together outside of the con.

TheChrisWaits- awesome as always.  Great discussion on panels and such a sweetie.  I still chuckle when I think about the Werewolf game we played and Adam said, "Dude, why are your eyes still open?!" and you hear Chris say innocently, "Because you said "Protectors, open your eyes.".... Oh... oops."  Tiffany I didn't get to talk to enough but seemed like an awesome gal.

Woodrow- awesome as always.  No hotpants this year, but Daisy Dukes on two accounts.  I had a lot of some of the "other" crowd ask me after, "who is that guy?" because Woodrow is so funny in such a deadpan way.  Love it.  Held grapes in front of his crotch so as not to add to the ball exposure.  We all thank him for that.

Met:
skydragonknight- what's your name again?   :smirk

AfterCrescent- Even funnier and cooler in person.  Shared a room, so got some good, quality time.  Amazing conversation adder to panels and downright awesome person.  Sounds just like Michael Cera which I want to totally exploit somehow.  Loved when we played werewolf and he started giving the instructions and after 30 seconds Adam said, "what a minute, how is it that this guy is better than me already?"

BobisMyRhino- even cuter in person and downright awesome.  I got to lace up her corset, so total win for me.

Podcasters:
Re-Met:
Adam from The PodgeCast.  Self proclaimed drunken ass all weekend.  Didn't like when attention wavered from him, which wasn't very often due to his loud voice and personality.  In general though, makes hang outs more exciting and is always pushing the envelope, which makes most people squirm which I love to watch.  Good times.

Luke from The PodgeCast.  Awesome, righteous dude even though he pretends like he's not.  But he is, so don't let it fool you.  Organized a scavenger hunt which I loved, so huge kudos.

Mattfrom The PodgeCast.  Actual drunken ass.

Rob from The BearSwarm.  Took a picture of his balls.  His meeting Zeke was a touching, loving moment which we all got to experience.  I feel like he's a fairly subdued, quiet guy in general, but turns it up to 11 for cons, so I respect that heavily.

Jenn from TrapCast.  Didn't see a lot of her, but girl drama played a role in the weekend.  I think that's a good thing- there are enough girls now for there to be girl drama.

Don Dehm
from Pulp Gamer- awesome guy as always.  Want to spend some more time with him at some point.

Ryan Macklain from many different projects- Hardly got any time with him.

Met:
Mikefrom Bear Swarm- awesome and scarily smart.  I have a strategy in werewolf/ mafia etc- kill him first because the dude is way too good at that game.  Got totally wasted the first night and it was fun to watch that as an outside observer.

Brant from TrapCast- Total hottie and awesome guy.  Got to have some good conversations, but wish we had more.  Did I mention how hot he is?

George from TrapCast- Next year he should get a hat and a shovel and go in a Garden Gnome costume.  Was surprised at how much of a pussy he is in general, but did take the 2 punches to the stomach pretty well.  Told everyone who would listen that every big guy he met was BG Zeke (they weren't).  Said lots of dumb things, but I totally appreciate the "Hey now, that's girl math!" when I was talking about pregnancy, so that one was at least funny.

Sean from Narrative Control- Awesome awesome dude.  Felt like he was instantly one of our people.  Could talk about fun fluff and very serious topics.  Wish we had more time.  Very tall guy and another hottie.

Justin from Narrative Control- Brant's counterpart.  Didn't get much time with him.

Mags from All Games Considered- I want her to be my new best friend.  One of the nicest people I've ever met and that was having only met her for like 15 seconds.  Incredibly huggable and just an amazing person.  Seriously wish I had her on hand to gripe to and make me feel better.  Wonder if she rents herself out.

Sure I forgot folks, let me know who and I'll fill them in later.

That's right!  You didn't.  Though you would be a re-meet and I think I got more time with you the first time I met you at V3 then this one.  Though I do think it's funny that Adam did keep trying to introduce me to you.  The boy doesn't introduce me to a soul when I'm in St. Louis, but like 3 times he tried to tell me who you were.

Still think a fight with you and zombies would've been very Left4Dead and awesome.

I met a bunch of cool people, too. I won't go into grave details like Meg (mainly because she covered most of it, and I'd feel bad if I forgot someone.) Everyone I met was awesome. :D

I will touch on a couple comments, though. ;)

I think my favorite moment was a couple games later when someone pointed to him and said "You did it." And he replied, "Did what?" Apparently too innocently, so everyone killed the protector round one.

No one has ever told me I sound like him before Josh told you. I'm actually slightly less unhappy with my voice having heard you two say that. If you remember, I never called your voicemail project because I'm not a huge fan of it. :P

Now onto my minor additions:
PI - Even though Woodrow spoiled the surprise of what you look like, I was still surprised. It was great meeting you for the short time, though, as you are vocally exactly what I expected. :P

Robert Bohl - Hilariously awesome person. And I love how unique, simple, and yet awesome his game is. It gets triple props because BimR loves it and is willing to play again. (She doesn't like learning new & complicated games)

Rob Justice (even though that's now actually how it's spelled) - Funny-ass person. Glad he ran a comedic Inspectres game that I got to partake in. He also did an amazing job of running Do You Worship Cthulu even if his balls came out more than anyone expected...

Glad to see my nuts are getting attention here.

Couple things, First I did have underwear on under my shorts. Someone noticed the GIANT hole so I pulled out my balls. There was no slipping, it was all intentional.

Second, you're looking for Matt from the Podgecast and Mike from the Bear Swarm!, Meg. You've got'um/had'um reversed.

Third, I am much quieter in normal day to day life but the weird combination of being around friends who make me comfortable and being around strangers who I don't care what they think about me brings out the more extroverted side of me.

Lastly, I'm glad you guys liked the InSpecters game. It was chaotic as hell and I was afraid people had a bad time. I tried to control it as much as I could but there is only so much you can do with 11 players and 1 game master.

First time though was Adam pointing out there may be slippage.  Then it was intentional.  Besides, I like my version better.  Better story.

Second, you're looking for Matt from the Podgecast and Mike from the Bear Swarm!, Meg. You've got'um/had'um reversed.
I was trying to edit and ended up not reading who I was talking about and screwing it up.  I know who's who, just screwed up editing.

Your imagination probably makes Meg's description out to be worse than it really was.  That was my face David had his ass in front of, the bastard, and really, once you've seen Rob's balls for the first time, the various follow up nudity is just window dressing.  GenCon was certainly not less awesome for hotel room antics.

Oh fuck no!  Although fat sweaty nerds are still a majority, there is still an only thinly veiled undercurrent of debauchery and excess.  Granted, I have yet to be invited to any of it, but then again I was married for 3 gencons and was not in a good emotional state for the 4th.  Next year I intend to have a blast.

Ooh!  Ooh!  I was there!  I really enjoyed hanging out with everyone, especially at the panels.

Apologies go out to everyone that actually listened to my story Wed night.  Authorization for that story should come from congress and involve two keys.

Here's my take on Gen Con

Wed: Arrived and stood in line to get badges.  About an hour later we had them and went back to our hotel, but we found that we had been charged twice.  So back to the con center to get refunds/void done and to meet the BGs.  Went to Steak & Shake with everyone; AC and BimR are awesome in person.
Later that night, I managed to get left by the people I drove with, so I ended up crashing on the BGs couch.

Thurs: First day of the con!  I started off panel-hopping and checking out the vendor hall.  I bought the Magic Burner (Luke Crane) on a whim (looks good so far) and found the Rio Grande room, which was awesome.  Awesome as in free food and lots of Dominion.
The BGs panels were fairly highly attended, and it managed to slow a couple of them down :(  But the panels, as a whole, were great.

Friday: Went to one panel, missed the Ennies, and spent most of my time in the vendor hall and the Rio Grande room.
We jailed our friend for 5 minutes on the charges of General Cowardice, Criminal Pacifism, Conduct unbecoming of a Man, and the Inability to Hold an Opinion; it was pretty funny.

Saturday:  Panels at their finest.  On the Critical Analysis of Games was great, the Reverse Forum went well (if small), and the Media Meet & Greet was a blast.
I got Things We Think About Games (Will Hindmarch, Jeff Tidball), which is a great book, a better bathroom reader, and a sub-par bludgeoning object.  I also got a cool sword-cane.

Sunday:  Roamed the vendor hall until lunch, where we all got together at PF Chang's.  Then started the drive home.
Monday:  Arrived at home at 1:00 AM

Good times.

Read: Adam is pretty f'n boss.  At least, that's what I read.

Seriously, though, the con was a blast and it wouldn't have been without so many awesome people roaming about.

:(

The local Italian Festival was a complete bust for the store (extra hassle for very little return, thanks), I would have rather been at Gen Con (although I'm glad I missed the sackage show).  Thankfully Thursday was ridiculously good (second best day ever at the store), so missing the festivities wasn't a total downer.

Next year, I'll know better than to believe that "thousands" of people will be at Italian Festival...

Dean you were so missed. Between Zeke having to show up late and you being rumored to not be coming at all, I was  :banghead

Not sure what you were expecting, AC...but thanks, I think.

PI, I expected a 30+ year old white guy with a goatee, clad in ARMY surplus. That's what your e-personality leads one to assume.
WTF, is PI really a small asian woman, or something? Now I'm curious...

I got to lace up her corset, so total win for me.

There is a very good reason why I do the ren faire thing now.  This is it.  Also: bodices.  I've been told I have a knack for lacing them up.

I loved:
~meeting everybody and finally putting a face to a name.
~hanging out with my new nerdy friends and playing games.
~buying things for not-too-bad prices.
~eating a ton of junk food.
~The endless and plentiful orgies
~dressing up.
~being gloriously nerdy.
~wearing a pink shirt that had the word "clam" on it.
~listening to Zeke sing about going to bed
~watching Woodrow walk around in daisy dukes
~Seeing Adam's balls and listening to the remarks he made afterwards
~standing over Meg and Josh's bed and watching them as they slept
~ rooming with Meg and Josh and getting to see them in full panel action!
~getting free stuff from vendors, people I had just met, and some people I didn't know at all...
~Getting to hug the giant Munchkin and hold his chainsaw
~getting to talk to a few of the artists and finding out how they got their artwork into games
~seeing the horses pulling the carriages. They were cute and some even had glitter on their hooves!
~ taking care of the drunkies and watching them pass out in funny, awkward positions.
~Seeing Robert Bohl's face when I accused him of being the worshipper (which he was). He's an actor.
~Seeing ChrisWait's reaction when EVERYONE accused him of being the worshipper (he was the MFing SEER)
~spending some good, quality time in small aircrafts with a really cranky AC. You have no idea how much fun he is when he's sleep deprived.  :D

I did feel bad that I didn't contribute anything to the panels I went to-sorry Josh and Meg! I just felt sorta stupid. I really didn't have anything intelligent to say, and to keep the illusion that I wasn't completely retarded, I decided to just keep my mouth shut. I did learn a lot though. I should shut up more often.  :D

I also felt bad that I was such a party pooper. I was ALWAYS the first one to bed. I wasn't happy about that. I promise it won't happen again. I overscheduled myself. The two weeks leading up to Gencon were filled with a ton of Taiko rehearsals, sewing, and midterm projects. By the time I got to Gencon, I was already running on empty.
I'm never going to do that much at one time ever again. I hope.

Anyway, I had a blast. It's really fun to be around people who are passionate about gaming. But it's really really fun to be around awesome people! Seriously, you guys were a fun crowd to hang out with.

Oh, this I had to share:
There was a guy walking around the con taking pictures of people with his bunny rabbit. I was a little freaked out when he walked up to me, perfectly straight faced and asked me if he could take a picture of me  (http://www.flickr.com/photos/teh_bunneh/3831841933/) holding his rabbit. Now that I've seen the gallery (http://www.flickr.com/photos/teh_bunneh/sets/72157621946566647/show/), I find it hilarious. There are some truly funny ones in there.

You know, if I had seen that that was your Black Canary outfit, I would've fought much harder against you choosing Pikachu for the night I got to hang out with you.

~wearing a pink shirt that had the word "clam" on it.
I just remembered my favorite 2 minutes.
I was wearing the BG shirt given to me. It politely said, in large font, "They call it a clam for a reason." on the front.
BimR decided I had to wait for her while she went to the restroom. I had a wonderful 2 minutes sitting on the floor next to the door to the women's restroom wearing the aforementioned shirt while women walked by, staring awkwardly. :D
