Sons of the Lhesh Haruuc

Campaign Backstory
The Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor watches the sun set from the top of Khaar Mbar'ost, thinking that the name he had selected all of those years ago for his fortress was prophetic.  It surely looked as if were it covered in blood tonight.  The hobgoblin looked down at his still powerful hands grasping the stone railing and tried to shake off the illusion that the blood was pouring out of him onto his legacy.  They were, in many ways, stones that he had fought and bled for many times over.

The High Warlord sighs to himself.  He is old - he can feel it when the chill of the night often refuses to leave his bones until midday.  He feels it on each step inside his magnificent tower, which more and more felt like a prison.  He feels it in the stares of the courtiers and the whispers of the foreigners in his capital.  Wondering when the corpse will be still and the ravens will feast.  When the plains of Darguun will be watered once more in blood - goblinoid and human, gnome and orc, he believes.  Everyone did.

Haruuc sighs again.  He is ready to stop bleeding, but does not know how.  None have appeared in whom he could place his trust, and his hope for someone suitable to assume his mantle before he fades completely are vanishing rapidly.  'Perhaps one will come tomorrow', he thinks as he surveys his grounds.  He grins, as he has been telling himself this for the past ten years of his life, with increasing urgency and decreasing hope each day.  And each time the sun goes down, the ravens creep a little closer.  'Maybe tonight will be the night,' he thinks with the odd mixture of hope and fear that overtakes him each time he thinks of death.  An end to the bleeding.  But he stands for a moment and listens to the thrum of blood through his body.  'Not tonight,' he decides.  'Not tonight... but soon.  Soon.'

The Lhesh Haruuc hears a sound from behind him and then the sound of a throat clearing.  If I had been an assassin, you would be dead now, my lord, the annoyed voice of Khaled, the Lhesh's goblin aide, complements the hobgoblin's dark thoughts.

I am not that far gone, Haruuc replies, adding 'almost' in his thoughts.  And if you were an assassin, I would have lost a great service more important than the blade between the ribs or a well-placed bolt.  Khaled smiles a bit at the compliment, then resumes his usual dour look.  Have you done it?  Sent the message I have asked?  Khaled nods.  If anything, he looks even more unhappy.  Good.  Now, to see who answers.  To see who will step forth into my hour of need.  The Lhesh's grin is almost hidden in the darkness as the sun sets.  'Night,' he thinks to himself as he feels the feral joy that has always been present even if the years have muted it somewhat, 'the time for the ravens to gather.'
OOC Backstory
Darguun has suffered from internal turmoil and external prejudice for decades.  Known more for the brutality of its customs and the quality of the mercenaries that it provides through House Deneith, the land ruled by the Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor has been viewed as a backwater, second only to Droamm among the civilized lands of Khorvaire.  It has suffered the machinations of goblinoid leaders and the plots of foreign kings, the incursion of Valenar elves and the scorn of Thranish priests, the persecution of the Five Nations and the hatred of the local tribes.  It is a land continually reminded of its past grandeur and past failures - the rise and fall of the Dhaakani empire and their failure to free themselves from the orcs and humans who plundered Khorvaire during their time of weakness.

The Llesh Haruuc has spent his life creating Darguun and attempting to protect it from the rocks and shoals it encounters on the river of history.  He believes that he has improved the status of goblinoids by creating a homeland, a place of refuge, where goblinoid customs can hold sway.  But he has not stayed wedded to long ago idealized empire.  The days of the Dhakaani empire have long since ended; while a new empire can look back to the past, it cannot live there.  The arguments of the tribal leaders who seek to rule in the traditional way are a pleasant reverie that threatens to cause a sentry on watch to sleep while the foes of the world edge closer in the darkness.

So the High Warlord has attempted to create a new ideal for his nation, an ideal that would mold itself to the sensibilities of goblinoids but would be acceptable, and adaptable, to the modern world.  And the warlord has hoped that a successor, as skilled as he was, would appear to take this burden from his shoulders and carry it forward before his aging frame surrenders to his greatest enemy, time.

But enemies are gathering.  The discovery of adamantine ore in the Seawall Mountains by a House Tharashk operative has increased pressure for mineral rights to be leased and pressure for those rights to never be leased.  The Dhakaani clans have protested the idea of orcs walking amongst the mountains of their strongholds.  Other threats face the goblinoid kingdom.

And so, the Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor has issued a call to those leaders he feels he can trust the most.  A call for their elite, the ones who are utterly loyal and fiercely skilled, able to act on their but remain steadfast in their duty to their clan.  Those that the Lhesh can wield as a blade in the dark to deal with the enemies facing his nation, both inside and outside.
Campaign Information
* I am looking for four to six players (ideally six).
* Character's will start at ECL 5.
* Level buyoff from Unearthed Arcana is allowed.  Races must be native to Darguun and trustworthy to the Lhesh Haruuc (mainly goblinoid, exceptions may be made with my approval).
* Optimization level 2
* Allowed sources: PHB, PHB II, Complete series, Eberron setting material, Races series, Heroes of Horror, Heroes of Battle, Monster Manual 1.  Other sources may be allowed with my approval.  Just try not to break the game.
* No evil alignments - this is not an evil campaign.
* Character generation method: open for discussion.  I was thinking 32 point buy (something around that power level).
* I think the game will go from 5th to 7th level and don't want to commit myself to more, but if everyone is enjoying it I'm sure more problems could be found for the party to deal with.  I am also DMing the Tides of Blood (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?board=43.0) campaign.
* Post at least once a day please.

Hmm...maybe.  If I chose Crusader, how would you handle maneuver refreshing?  Would be a Hobgoblin Warblade, a Bugbear something, or...how about an orog (Races of Faerun, I think)?

Character here (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=1467.msg46297#msg46297).

I'll have to take a look at the way crusader's recover mechanics.

Orog's wouldn't work without getting rid of the Orc blood, but might work with reflavoring and some mechanical changes.  There's serious prejudice against Orcs by the people of Darguun.
: Re: [Eberron 3.5] Goblinoid Campaign
: Schala_Zeal August 14, 2008, 08:48:02 PM
That crusader stuff is a mess.  It would probably require making a set list of your maneuvers known and rolling dice at Invisible Castle to make it random - you would have to make the list before hand, post it, and post rolls, rerolling if you already have the maneuver ready.  Sound doable?

No interest?  Is there anything that could be improved or are people just not interested?
: Re: [Eberron 3.5] Goblinoid Campaign
: Shadowhunter August 18, 2008, 10:38:02 PM
I must say I'm interested, I just can't figure out what to play.

I'm leaning towards every partys best friend, the Buffer-God.
A Goblin Focused Trasmuter, going into War Weaver.

Though I'm not skilled enough to be a God, which suits your optimization level just fine :)

Story-wise, I see no need for improvement.

Perhaps people wish for a higher level?
I actually don't know.

Though I wouldn't complain if it were lvl 6-8 instead of 5-7, since I could contribute with lvl 3 spells in the weave during our final tests. ;)

I might be interested, but I, too, would be clueless as to what to play, might find something just looking around, that happens sometimes.

Personally I would love to play in a neutral\evil goblinoid campaign. Good goblins doesnt do it for me. Not saying it cant be fun. It just doesnt inspire me. And yes I know they are somewhat civlized in Eberron. But still...  :smirk

You can still play a neutral goblinoid; this campaign simply restricts evil alignments.

On another note, I'm thinking about Bugbear Warblade/Kensai focused on Iron Heart and Diamond Mind- a goblin samurai.

Neutral alignments are fine.  I just want to keep it from graphic and/or mindless evil.  Torturing someone in the name of the mission?  Acceptable - just don't go into too much detail on it.  Killing all the family members who have no knowledge of a target?  Not acceptable.

It should be fine not having the campaign setting.  I'll try to get a synopsis to you so you have a general idea.  I also should flesh out what the campaign will be based on a bit more.

I don't have the setting either. I played DDO for the trial, and read one Eberron book, but other than that, I don't know it. I'm thinking a mounted build, a small goblin riding on a medium worg can fit anywhere an elf/orc/hobgoblin can, and lances are mean. Would you accept psionics in the form of a psychic warrior?

Darguun Campaign

There is a good map of Khorvaire here (http://sancus.off.net/Eberron_Khorvaire_Map_1.3.pdf).  Warning: quite a large file.  Darguun is in the southeast, pretty much the lower right-hand corner.

History
The nation of Darguun was formed by the goblinoid tribes during the Last War as a result of human greed and stupidity.  House Deneith, an organization that provides mercenary services, had determined that they could act as a middle man to sell the services of the goblinoid tribes to all parties in the war.  The nations of Cyre and Breland, neither of which was possessed of a powerful army on their own, were interested in this and both hired a large number of mercenaries.  Their common border became saturated by goblinoids.

A hobgoblin named Haruuc grasped the potential of the situation.  He arranged a series of secret meetings with the leaders of the other tribes and, through bribery and appeals to racial loyalty, the mistreatment of goblinoids, and their glorious history, formed an alliance to create a goblinoid nation.

With the goblinoids vastly outnumbering the military forces of Cyre and Breland, the territory was quickly secured.  Breland, confronted by numerous other threats and unprepared for this betrayal, made a deal with Haruuc.  Darguun would be recognized by Breland in exchange for a cessation of hostilities and continuing protection from Cyre.  Haruuc became the Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor, the High Warlord Haruuc of the Scarlet Blade.  Cyre never accepted the goblinoid presence; warfare remained fairly constant up until the Day of Mourning, when the strange gray mist covered the remains of Cyre and that nation ceased to exist.

A few years following the Day of Mourning, the human nations of Karrnaath, Aundair, and Breland formally acknowledge the sovereignty of Darguun with the Treaty of Thronehold.  The Lhesh Haruuc vowed to restrain his followers from future violence against these three nations.  The human nation of Thrane showed marked distaste with Darguun.

Haruuc might not be able to keep that vow, as several of the tribal groups do not favor peace with humans.  There are many who keep with the old ways, still worshiping the Mockery or the Shadow and refuse to say prayers or ask for blessings from any of the gods of the newly introduced Sovereign Host.  Some tribal leaders feel that they should be the Warlord of Darguun and that their destiny is to conquer all of Khorvaire and return to the glorious days of the Dhakaani Empire, when the goblinoids ruled over the whole continent.
Geography
Darguun is divided into three regions.  The Seawall mountains form the western and northwestern border.  The gnomish nation of Zilargo lies to the west and Breland lies to the northwest.  Marguul Pass cuts through the mountains to provide access to the city of Sterngate, in the northeastern part of Zilargo right on the border of Breland.  Sterngate provides lightning rail services to the Brelish city of Stilaskur and from there, to much of Khorvaire.  The Seawall mountains are riddled with the stronghold of goblinoid tribes, many of which are resent of Haruuc's rule.  Tribal infighting is also prominent - some feel that the only reason a group has not yet arisen to overthrow the Lhesh Shaarat'kor is because the tribes have not yet decided who the rightful leader of the goblinoid people is.

The capital city of Rhukaan Draal, where Haruuc constructed his famous fortified palace of Khaar Mbar'ost (Red House - literally, "blood-colored fortified dwelling").  Some feel that it is telling that the Warlord hired the human House Cannith to build his dwelling.  Rhukaan Draal itself is a town adopted from the remains of a frontier Cyran town - it has grown to a population of about 82,500.  It is a center of trade for goods imported from abroad - the trade roads through Marguul Pass and the Ghaal River which provides river travel from the Kraken Bay to the east make it a natural destination for caravans, and it's reputation as one of the safer regions of Darguun means that non-goblinoid merchants are more likely to travel there than other regions of the nation.

The northern plains of Darguun were once part of Cyre.  The Lhesh Haruuc leads the tribes of the lowlands, though tribal conflict is still common.  Kobold slaves farm the land.  Cities and towns in this region used to be Cyran settlements and almost all were badly damaged during the Last War.  The goblinoids repaired them according to their standards and tastes, giving a ramshackle and chaotic appearance to the towns.  The plains are bordered on the east by the wall of gray mist that marks the Mournlands.  The towns on the border are heavily fortified and peopled by those who are not afraid of the horrific sounds they sometimes here, and the monsters that lope out of the mists.

The southern and southeastern reaches are a wilder region.  The southwest portion is dominated by the Torlaac Moor, where few goblinoids brave the moist climate.  The Torlaac River north of the moor is the other major river in the country - several towns line its banks as it flows from the Seawall Mountains to the sea.  The Khraal rain forest covers much of the southeastern country.  There are several settlements on the edge, but few desire to tempt the dangerous creatures inside too closely.
The Tribes of Darguun
The goblinoids of Darguun fall into one of three major tribes, each of which has numerous clans underneath it.  The Dhakaani and Marguul tribes live in the Seawall Mountains, while the Ghaal'dar live in the northern lowlands.  Each clan consists of a mixture of different races, including goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears.  Tribal and clan affiliations are very important, particularly in the more rural regions of Darguun where the reach of the Lhesh Haruuc extends only tentatively.  Clan affiliations tend to have more impact in day to day relations than tribal membership.  The position within a clan is important for dealings within and across clans as well.  Clan membership is often marked in some way, such as ritual scarring or tatoes in addition to style of dress and colors.

The Ghaal'dar are generally loyal to the Lhesh Haruuc, following his edicts for the most part, particularly if they are enforced with military force.  For all that the Warlord had tried to get the clans of the lowland tribe to work together, feuds are still commonplace and often settled with violence.  The tribes of the mountainous regions live much as they have for hundreds of years, and fighting amongst the tribes and clans is commonplace.  In general, they are hostile to members of the other humanoid races and resist the domination of Haruuc, but they are not a cohesive unit.  Slavery of the common races is still practiced.
Religion
Most members of the tribe worship either the Mockery, the god of treachery over honor and a skilled warrior who claims evil fighters, rogues, monks, and assassins as his followers, or the Shadow, a chaotic evil being devoted to dark magic and the corruption of nature that is revered by evil wizards and socerors.  The last century has seen the introduction of the gods of the Sovereign Host, the counterparts to the Dark Six that are still worshiped.  Haruuc worships Dol Dorn and has spread the worship of the Host among the tribes of the lowlands.  Temples dedicated to Dol Dorn (god of strength at arms, a chaotic good deity of war who is the brother of Dol Arrah and the Mockery), Dol Arrah (god of honor and sacrifice, a lawful good deity who is the sister of Dol Dorn and the Mockery), and Balinor (a neutral deity of nature, hunting, and animal life) can be found in Rhukaan Draal.

Recent times have also seen the rise of a sect following the Silver Flame (a lawful good religion which is the national religion of Thrane, a human nation ruled by a theocracy).  Calling themselves the Torches, they argue passionately that only by embracing the Silver Flame will the fires of the past be reignited for Darguun and the Dhakaani Empire.  Many of this sect are disgusted with the presence of House Deneith and House Tharashk in their nation.
Power Groups
House Deneith
The rebellion of the goblinoid mercenaries that led to the creation of Darguun was a setback for the dragonmarked house, but their leadership dedicated themselves to forming a strong relationship with Haruuc.  This is a relationship of mutual gain - the Lhesh gains respectability, Darguun gains desperately needed money (as mercenaries are still the main export of the region), and the dragonmarked house needs the mercenary services of the goblinoid tribes.  House Deneith has an outpost inside Rhukaan Draal and a fortress a short distance away known as the Gathering Stone, where it trains and supplies the goblinoid mercenaries.  Both of these locations are leased from Haruuc, as the dragonmarked houses are not allowed to own land.  Most mercenaries hired come from one of the Ghaal'dar clans.
House Tharashk
The prospectors of this dragonmarked house are interested in the wealth that they believe is lying inside and under the Seawall Mountains.  They have been unable to get an agreement from Zilargo to approach the mountains from the west, so they have been attempting to persuade the leaders of Darguun into allowing them approach from the east.  Unfortunately, prejudice against orcs is very high in Darguun, so the orc heritage of the house has prevented a successful deal from being reached.  The house has leased a compound in Rhukaan Draal in hopes of strengthening their ties and getting a deal approved.
Rhukaan Taash (Razor Crown)
The largest and most powerful of the Ghaal'dar clans and the rulers of the lowlands.  While they possess skilled warriors, it is mostly due to their overwhelming numbers that accounts for most of their power.  While mainly loyal to Haruuc, some of the lesser clan chiefs argue that Darguun should continue to expand, as the human nations will not tolerate a goblinoid empire that could threaten their power.  Some go so far as to urge preemptive attacks on the nations of Zilargo or Breland, arguing that a confrontation is inevitable.
Kech Shaarat (Bladebearers)
The Bladebearers are the largest of the Dhakaani clans.  Not much is known about them - they have stayed in the depths of the Seawall Mountains, though rumors have spread that fighting amongst the mountain clans has picked up recently.
Kech Volaar (Wordbearers)
One of the smallest Dhakaani clans, the Wordbearers have gone to great lengths to [reserve the lore of the Dhakaani Empire.  Its armorers and stonemasons are unmatched in all of Darguun.  They have help firm against the might of more numerous clans, and are led by a powerful dirge singer named Tuura Dhakaan.  Members of the clan often travel beyond the mountains and even beyond Darguun, seeking Dhakaani ruins for powerful magical devices and lore that may remain from the days of the ancient empire.

A worg-riding goblin sounds interesting.

For setting/story reasons, no psionics please.  Sorry - I do like the system.

A goblin. Let's see...

Drawbacks to two dump stats. No hit on Con. No hit on Int. Moderatly useful raise in Dex. Check.
Drawbacks on grapple. Check. Wizards were bad at this even before this. No matter.
Drawback on carrying limit. Carrying stuff? That's what bags of holding are for. And friendly, muscular, Bugbears/Hobgoblins. Or donkeys. Check.

Darkvision, more AC, bonus on moving silently and hide?
Check.

Sign me up :lol

As I said, I'm in, though I would prefer that we start at level 6.
Playing a third of the adventure without WW is not problem.
Playing through a third of it without increase in spell level I can live with, but rather not. I'd rather start with it so it doesn't bother me during the course of the game.
But the fact that I can't go around casting Haste or Fly at the "height" of our expected career doesn't entice me.

Background
One such as Bhaur in the mercenary line of work did not rise to become as feared as he is through strength of arms alone.  His early acceptance of the human faith of the Sovereign Host gave him the conviction that lesser goblinoids lacked.  They were subsequently crushed beneath his heel- in an honorable fashion, but ruthlessness nevertheless still runs strong in his bugbear blood.  Heavily scarred from many skirmishes, Bhaur bears them with pride, relating the tales of his victories only when pressed.  He visibly lacks totems and fetishes, other things that his primitive brethren adore, a sign in and of itself that they should be disdained, because he believes in the ascendancy of civilization in his homeland.  When the call went out for champions of Darguun, he was one of the first to answer.

Got room for one more?
I've never read any Eberron, but I've been itching to play a Goblin since I started reading the webcomic!
I may do something simple like a Goblin Rogue (wilderness rogue variant) or even a warg-riding Ranger/Scout (Swift Hunter).

If you have spot id like to chip in too. Was thinking of playing a goblin druid with this really backwater primitive voodooy feel. Ive got some Eberron play experience ( we even went through Darguur once).

Here are the people who are in:
Blade2718
Nodaisho
ZeroSpace
Shadowhunter

The following have expressed interest:
j0lt
Lektor
AlisAtAn

I would like to keep it at 6, and don't know if AlisAtAn is still interested since he was interested in a more evil feel.

How are you handling XP for characters with LA?  Do you have just enough XP to be ECL 5 and then have to deduct from your total to buy off LA?

Ok, I see Martial Adepts, concepts for Druids and Swift Hunters...
Which makes me ponder wether or not Haste would be a worthwile investment for us, considering that:
1. Maneuvers are not full attack actions.
2. Skirmish damage are not triggered by ranged full attacks, due to the movement clause.

So with that in mind, what spells would you all like me to cast on you?
I've got 14 lvl 1's, 8 lvl 2's and 4 lvl 3's. (collegiate wizard)
Fly is obvious but what else?

Working on a CS, will post asap.

That depends on Schala.
If I go with a mount such as a Worg, would the mount's movement count towards my required movement for Skirmish damage?
: Re: [Eberron 3.5] Goblinoid Campaign
: Nodaisho August 30, 2008, 01:19:18 AM
I'm not really sure what buffs I want, I have not played much above level 3. I am going to be self-buffing with a bull's strength, as a third level druid, I won't have much when it comes to spell slots, but I will probably buy a wand of lesser vigor, should heal... 11 HP per charge, if I am not mistaken. If you all just survive until the battle is over, I can fill everyone back up with that.

Jolt, even if Schala did allow it to count (which I would think it should), you can't make a full attack after your animal moves, barring some later level abilities of some PRCs.

I'm assuming you are talking about me when you say druid, I am not going farther than 3 in druid, just took it because I wanted an animal companion for a mount, since I am going to be using a lance.

Schala, would you let me have the worg as an animal companion? It seems like it is a bit better than any of the comparable companions, but I think of worgs as being, in general, the ride of choice for goblins.

Greater magic weapon would be good.  Just looking at the SRD, I see: enlarge person, protection from arrows and protection from alignment.

Really?  I'd think that it would, since riding an animal counts as a free action (if I recall correctly)

Movement from the Worg will count for skirmish damage.  IIRC, you can full attack with ranged weapons during movement, but if you ride up to melee, you are limited to a standard action (since it takes "time" to get there).  But it has been a while since I looked.

I'll have to compare the Worg to the others - it might end up costing a feat but leaving you with an animal companion.  I'll try to answer in the next day or two, but it might not be until Wednesday - sorry.  Would you mind posting this question asking for advice on another board here?  I am not sure of how to handle this and would have to look some stuff up, but I am AFB until Wednesday.  This goes for j0lt also.

I am fine with you being 5th level character but down the experience for the buyoff, so you should have 3000 less than a LA 0 character.  Does anyone have a problem with this?

Just for reference... When making a ranged attack while mounted, you can make a full attack, but the attack occurs halfway between the movement. So the Worg would have to move at least double the distance necessary for skirmish to activate. :D

Excellent.  I may go with a simpler animal such as a wolf, but since Nodaisho's already going that route, I may switch my character over to a ranged rogue build.

Well, there is a difference between our characters, it just so happens they both ride mounts into combat, mine prefers charging with a lance while yours prefers staying back where he won't get hit over the head so much.

edit: Schala, maybe modify my druid level down by one for the higher normal abilities, like the really powerful ones knock it down by four or eight?

Knocking your druid level down by one would work.

I imagine a character something like this:

Shakra, middle aged female Goblin, N
Ashbound Druid 5

HP 41 (Full @ 1st, avg after) Saves FRW +7/+1/+7 (+1 versus arcane magic for all saves)

AC 16 (MW Chain shirt 4/ Dex 2)

S 8 D 14 C 16 I 14 W 18 Ch 10  (scores before middle aged and race 11;13;17;13;16;9 level 4 point to wisdom)

Skills
Concentrate +11 (8 ranks)
Diplomacy +8 (8 ranks)
Handle Animal +5 (+9 regarding Dworek) (5 ranks)
Hide +6
Know: nature +14 (8 ranks)
Listen +5 (1 rank)
Move Silently +6
Ride 7 (1 rank)
Spellcraft 4 (2 ranks)
Spot 12 (8 ranks)
Survival  11 (+13 for aboveground natural) (5 ranks)

Feats:
ashbound
track

Spells per day: 5/4/3/2
3:
wind wall, call lightning

2:
barkskin, bear's endurance, bull's strength

1:
speak with animals, entangle, 2X cure light wounds

0:
create water, 2X detect magic,2X  cure minor wounds

I'd like to go for worg if available at a -1 level, alternative (gonna be a kennel!), else prolly just wolf or maybe dire bat.

How do you feel about spell compendium? several spells id like to use from there, or do you want to evaluate on a spell by spell basis?

Just out of curiousity, but do you have an idea of when we will be starting Schala? I'm kinda eager to start playing.
: Re: [Eberron 3.5] Goblinoid Campaign
: Schala_Zeal September 03, 2008, 07:54:15 PM
I think that it will start September 15th, possibly a bit earlier.  j0lt and Lektor will be the final two players.  I'll try to keep things moving, so that if two days go by without posting, I will try to move things forward if it is possible.

Also, while I am hammering out the story details - any suggestions on things people want or want to avoid for the feel, theme, etc?

I can't really say, as this is totally new to me. The only one I can say is that I prefer more combat than roleplay, but that's murder in OLG's.

Actually, I've found that there's greater player participation during combat, as each player is interested in the survival of their character.  Conversely, players will remain quiet while NPC interactions occur with PCs that are not theirs.
