: Check and mate, Sony.

It appears someone finally managed to devise a method to dump each PS3's personal console key, AKA "the mother of all keys".

There's pretty much nothing that can be done about keeping people from jailbreaking their consoles however the heck they want now. Without hardware changes, Sony can't change those keys.

It's looking a hell of a lot like the hackers won now.

I've stopped listening to the woes of Sony since someone got shot over a console on release.  I only passively heard about the massive hack done on their servers, and nothing since.

What does this mean?  Free DLC?

No, that was six months ago.

What this means is that short of recalling every console they ever sold and/or using rootkits (which have supposedly been deemed illegal, plus it's highly likely it wouldn't work anyways), Sony cannot prevent anyone from playing newer games via firmware updates. In the past, whenever a new method came up to run the latest games, Sony would release an update to keep jailbroken consoles further away and to keep them from playing other games released from that point onwards.

There's actually a list of games such as Catherine, PES2012 ( :puke), Dark Souls and White Knight Chronicles 2 that won't run on jailbroken PS3s thanks to the firmware barrier. Which is expected to change during the next month at the latest.

I'm currently hoping some developer releases a software-based dual-boot method. I own both backups and original games, but my PS3 is jailbroken and thus cannot play the originals online. (Not that I miss online much, but hey.)
