: Interested in being a mod?
: Meg April 25, 2011, 07:53:45 PM
I'd like 1 more mod to round out responsibilities.  You'd work primarily with Prime32 who really is handling almost everything alone now.  Chris pops in but the others have really moved on.

2 voices also are better to check with each other that they're making the right choices and to challenge each other.  So ideally, someone with a fairly different viewpoint from Prime so they can engage in healthy debate.

It doesn't need to be someone on all the time. That's fine.

If interested:
-- you must have presented yourself extremely maturely
-- you must be respected by members here
-- you should be "elected" by your peers

So if anyone is interested, post here and everyone else chime in.  No one is perfect of course.

OR- if you want to nominate someone- maybe they wouldn't nominate themselves but if a bunch of people came in and said "I think XYZ would be great!" then maybe XYZ would be encouraged to apply.

Pay is lousy. Benefits are crap. But the rewards can be unmeasurable.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?

I guess I'll nominate... Sinfire Titan?
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: AleksanderTheGreat April 25, 2011, 08:05:37 PM
I nominate JaronK, Agita, veekie, Sinfire Titan and Lycan... for now. Those are people who I respect, who contribute and who should have more then enough respect from this boards users.
If Prime wasn't already a mod, I would nominate him. :P
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: Agita April 25, 2011, 08:11:29 PM
Prime has asked me once or twice if I'd become a mod if asked, so I guess I'll throw my hat in? I've little way of knowing whether I fit the requirements, of course. I think the most wonky one is the first, though. :p Consider also that my point of view probably isn't too different from Prime's.
That aside, I can third the nomination of mai waifu Sinfire Titan, I guess. Veekie's chill too.

I like this idea. Two minds think better than one.

Pay is lousy. Benefits are crap.
Sounds like a standard part-time student job to me.

Time to lean back and watch the fireworks, hopefully a good candidate can be found.

Edit: Just because I was bored I decided to check PhaedrusXY's history. Seems he was online on the 24th, but has posted only once in April.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: archangel.arcanis April 26, 2011, 12:30:36 AM
As I said in the other thread I'm willing to do it and am on most of the time during the day (central time US), even if I'm not posting or reading every thread. I also act as a mod on a different forum as well, but that is mostly cleaning up after spam bots.

I'd also like to add +1 to PhaedrusXY and toss out RobbyPants as possible choices, should they be willing and able.

Aww.  How much work does this entail (as in hours per week)?
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: Meg April 26, 2011, 11:44:51 PM
It requires whatever you'd put into it. It would be best to be available for a period of time regularly so if something important comes up, you're available to jump in and help.  So someone who only can get online on weekends for example probably isn't best.  But it's not like you have to be on all the time- you need to know what's going on, who's who, and be able to make good, informed decisions.

So if you're interested, let us know how often you come on and about how much time you are here as it is. I would only add 1ish hour total per week to that number honestly.

Prime- what would you say?
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: bhu April 26, 2011, 11:57:38 PM
What would the mods be doing other than stepping in when people go over the line (i.e. what everyone sterotypically perceives as beings a mods job)?
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: Meg April 26, 2011, 11:58:34 PM
Added a poll for people here who were nominated. No worries if you're not voted for- being a mod is VERY different than being a poster. You can't get down and dirty if you're a mod like you can if you are just a poster.

I am more then willing. *wink*

You're not ready.

Probably Bozwevial, Archangel Arcanis or Sinfire Titan. Veekie and Agita rate on the Respectometer, but they have more overlap with Prime32 than the first three.

I apologize; I was obviously hasty in my statement. Post count alone does not determine maturity or worthiness to be a mod. The quality of a person's posts must also be taken into account.

I hereby retract my statement and instead base my disrecommendation on your attitude alone.

Yeah, I can see that I'm probably the last person who is worthy of being a mod but I at least am trying to do SOMETHING as a user, unlike some people. Who are yo to point out my "immaturity"? Aren't you the one who created a thread with sole purpose to mock another user? I am most definitely FAR from perfect but you better look at yourself before you post your comments.

Thank you Boz for proving yourself worthy of my short list. :D

Also, being a moderator isn't much of a prize...aside from moving or closing threads, most of us are quite capable of letting someone know they're getting out of hand...and usually in a way that makes them feel dumb and less likely to do it again.

Speaking of which...Solo, he said Sorry. You're just being a douche now for no reason.

Though this is if anything an example of the opposite of maturity I'm talking about.

A mature response would be "I know you are, but what am I?"

We'll see what the consensus says...should at least one person get ten or more votes, then I'd hypothesize there is at least a perceived need for more mods, if not an actual one.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?

: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: Meg April 27, 2011, 02:00:04 AM
I think just 1 more is good. Dan2 is around occasionally and Chris pops in too- I don't want to overmod it.

If it came down to a tie or close, first of all I'd want to make sure the people involved are interested (so if you aren't, speak up) and then either vote off or do something where 1 is it for a month and then the other... Or for certain boards- I don't want to punch a gift horse in the mouth...

Of that list I would probably cast my vote to either RobbyPants or veekie. Slightly leaning towards veekie, because I know him better. No offense to any other candidate.

Out of curiosity, is this new moderator going to be an all-around one or will he only look after a certain board?
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: veekie April 27, 2011, 12:13:32 PM
I think general purpose, we don't need that much added moderation in particular boards, PbP only needed a mod because theres regular subforum opening/moving going on and every now and then one of Endarire's threads in Min-Max really should go in Deliberations.

Thats about it for regular mod duties. Other than reports, which I dunno about.

All around I think, we don't have that much activity that we really need a dedicated mod to subareas. The only areas with such levels of activity are Min-max and PbP.

Personally I would say an all-around one would be a good choice. We don't have that many moderators around and it would rid us of possible toe-stepping. Now when I think of it, there are only two boards, the one for whining and the one for PbPs, that actually require moderation at any rate.

In any case, I would volunteer simply, because I have time and experience about moderation, but I think someone, who is not quite as disrespected should definitely pick up the mantle! (Go veekie)

Well, every now and then some people get it into their heads that you can be playing D&D wrong. :P

Which you can of course, but the key part is if the players enjoyed it.Thats the right and wrong of it.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: Meg April 29, 2011, 12:06:02 PM
The other side of moderation, the one that is probably even more important, is to have someone who I fully trust and I know has our back.  I'd be setting the person up with some power that is fairly hefty, and of course it's in my head that if the person is a wacka-doo, they could really fuck us over.

So of the nominees, could you all send me a PM first of all to say if you're interested (some posted here already, but still send the PM) and talk to me about your trustworthiness.

I also want someone who is a "culture" fit- in any operation, personality fit is almost more important than skill set in terms of a working relationship.  So talk to me about that too.

I haven't checked the site in ages, but I'm almost certain there's a free version. I used to use it occasionally for coordinating with friends, and never paid a single cent. It's also in the Ubuntu Software Centre. AFAIK, you only pay for calling actual phone numbers (calling other Skype users is free).

Things are getting tamer around here, just from the distance from 3.5's glory years.
I mean, people can go somewhere else to be total !@#$ .

Exactly... I'd like some names please. I look at people wanting certain members to leave the same way I look at break ups, if you got a place for them to go, then, and only then do you have an argument. Maybe I was a game show host in a past life, but when I left a girl, I'd be like "but you're not going home empty handed! Here's several other guys you can date, and your very own I dated Jim Profit t-shirt!"

I'd apply, but probably people here think I'm new. Even though my name is pretty much carved into the internet. At least on 4chan. I've been mod before at other forums, never big ones like this one. And I didn't really "moderate", I hate moderation, I was the anti-moderator. I'd undo others moderation to give some checks and balances. Mods need to be contradicted, and members are in a bad position to do it. You can't reason with someone with a gun in their hand. So at least if you have one mod who "gets it", they can undo bans, fix your posts, get them out of the spam gutter, and stuff like that until the other mods cut you a break and actually treat you like a human being. What a novel concept.

I have a reasonable distrust and dislike of mods. People tend to excuse their own misbehavior and intolerance by claiming it's "their forum". Some people just shouldn't run a website if they can't handle the differences of others. It's like Abraham Lincoln said, nearly any man can stand adversity. But if you want to judge a man's character, give him power. Guys like Fast Eddie of TvTropes, Richard the rapist Burlew, and Moot of 4chan, have extremely bad characters.

I'm writing a book about it. I'll probably have to come up with a shorter title then "Everything I Learned About Politics, I Learned From Posting At Internet Forums". But that's basically the premise. Hopping from message board to message board for ten years, has taught me a lot about what to expect from people, and what to expect in return. You have to learn to depend on your super ego when on the internet, because no one is going to treat you fairly, abide by the rules they're enforcing, or believe a word you say. Thats why half the book is basically me just having a rage fit against some notable mods, and wishing I had their personal information to just give out to the public. The way they just play jump rope with my IP address.

This guy, right here. Seriously. He's always A) on-topic B) helpful C) pleasurable to read

On the list? Mmm Tshern and/or Sinfire. Its a shame NGDBSS doesn't haunt here more (he likes enworld) or I'd nominate him. Obviously no one from GitP lasts long if they are half a decent person.

I live at Min/max. I only come out when following prime's links (which is the only reason I am here). But I would say if min/max needs another psuedo mod, I'll throw my hat in the mix for a revised 'handbooks'-type subforum. I do lots of community resources and I feel like I am the only one with the drive and the consistency to pull them all together in a way that doesn't get buried. This would only require a single mod power once the new subforum is made which would be moving things in from within min/max. It would be helpful for archive purposes to be able to edit threads once inside, but if I don't warrant that level of trust then I suppose it isn't necessary.

I suppose I could simple quote things and import them into other boards where I'm a mod, but that defeats the whole purpose of helping out the community. Sorry if I seem out in left field over here but I don't follow the podcasts and have little reason to stray from min/max.

I still don't get why you can't just put "'handbooks'-type resources" in the handbooks section. ??? Then there's Tshern's stickied Handy Links (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=143), which even contains a list of handbooks. If you're worried about something getting buried then post it there. Would it help if the Handbooks section was renamed?

Linking your other post on this for convenience: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=10375.msg425815#msg425815

And mods aren't allowed to edit posts, other than stickies posted by other mods. Copyright issues. That's why there have been a few shared accounts like Handbook_Writer and ArenaManager.

I like handbooks. Granted its unorthodox, but I have one. I like the idea of a thread where you rate one kind of thing to build for a character.

The stickied threads are in my opinion the hold-over from 339.

Granted I see a lot of the world differently than people nowadays, but I am still convinced that a lot of the thread meta-resources (where you go to look up lists) is different enough from where you go to get ideas for an archivist's abilities.

I suppose if I'm just barking at the moon I can do the work over at another forum, I just didn't want to cross-pollinate forums.

And mods aren't allowed to edit posts, other than stickies posted by other mods. Copyright issues.
This is a good thing then. Of course much better than gitp.

I have, and presumably veekie has too. All of us were in the recipients header of the PM, so he should have.

The best course of action would be to divy up the boards into groups and have each of us pick a group to patrol relentlessly moderate.

So, who wants to be on damage control for the BLYHT section?

Pretty much, yeah. For one, veekie heavily favors the homebrew section(s), so it'd make sense to put him in charge of that.

So, who wants to be on damage control for the BLYHT section?
lalalalala can't hear you
Just kidding, I dunno. With BYLHT being a bit of a special case, it seems to me like it would be worth considering making it a sort of general board, so that whoever has the least headache already at the moment can step in if it's necessary, rather than sticking a single guy with the job.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?

I think I can handle the Play Like You Have To section.
: Re: Interested in being a mod?
: veekie August 02, 2011, 07:14:14 PM
Got the PM yeah.

I spend most of my time on Homebrew, GM Gameology and Deliberations to start with, so those are natural areas. The Kitchen Sink and Inspiration Strikes might warrant a look as well, those are low traffic, but I do keep some track of them. For the most part these areas are moderation light, excepting the occasional move/stickying.

BLYHT would need a combined effort, I think, else it'd be cruel and unusual duty for any one guy to be monitoring that.

Better idea: SFT, do you have AIM? seems like it would be easiest to get everyone together on an instant messenger than arranging PMs and having some gotten lost when we forget to address them to everyone and whatnot.
