: Build Me A Monk 2: Build Me A Wight
: Rejakor February 08, 2011, 04:25:22 PM
Okay, I had an idea.

The Wightblade feat from Dragon lets you give negative levels with a wielded weapon as well as with your Wight Slam.
WIGHTBLADE [MONSTROUS]
You can use your energy drain attack while using a melee
weapon.
Prerequisites: Energy drain ability.
Benefit: On a successful melee hit against a living
opponent, you may use your energy drain ability in addition
to dealing normal damage for your weapon.
Normal: You may only use your energy drain when you
strike with your natural weapons.
Suggested Class/Race: Wight
Dragon Magazine #: 348 (Ecology – the Ecology of the
Wight)
Where is a playable Wight template?  If so, what would the best melee combatant style Wight be, given the rules I laid down in the thread before this one?

I can think of a kalashtar feral human wight passive way monk 1/psywar 4/shiba protector 1/fist of the forest 1/something 1 but i'm crap.  Ideally the Wightblade (cause that's this character) would be smacking opponents with both lots of damage and negative levels.  Would need some way to stab at ranged (bloodstorm blade?) probably work swordsage in somewhere, maybe lose fist of the forest because lol no con.  Need a way to fly, too, by level 10.  Psywar is there mostly cause of vigor, cause wight = few hitpoints = squishy.  Some way to stop the few things undead aren't immune to would probably be nice, too.

There is a wight template in Savage Species and Libris Mortis has a wight racial progression class.

Monsters of faerun give ghosts the option to pick up energy drain as well (either or 2 levels depending upon the ghost - presumably single level energy drain is a minor power, double level drain is a major power)

Energy Drain (defenders of faith)
+2 enchantment. Deals 1d4 negative levels per touch attack.

3.0 has a lot of powerful stuff in it. And even if trumped by a newer entry, any negative energy immune creature is capable of using the DMG's Life-Drinker which bestows two negative levels per hit.

Lifedrinker is pretty much the be all end all of negative level creation from melees.  I believe MiC lets you apply specific weapon traits to other types of weapon, so you can have Lifedrinker Kukris and such if you wanted.  Either way, just becoming immune to negative levels (IIRC Warforged are, and if not Necropolitans definitely are) and wielding this is insanely powerful.  There's really no need for becoming a Wight to do this.

Of course, you could put this on a Soul Eater, instead...

Yeah wow.

+4 LA.

That is totally playable and stuff.  I was thinking, looking at it, +2ish at most.

Well, there goes that idea.

Still, you can absolutely play a level draining character.  Consider a crit focused Necropolitan Monk 6/Shou Disciple 5/Warblade 9 who wields a pair of Enfeebling Lifedrinker Kukris and uses the Eviscerator line of feats along with any maneuvers that let him attack more, all while in Blood in the Water stance.  You fear and level drain enemies while boosting your attacks.  Imperious Command is obviously handy.

Yeah, but facing an ooze, a construct or an undead would ruin your day.

Yeah, looks like my best bet for the idea I had would be necropolitan with lifedrinking gauntlets under the ruling that gauntlet enchantments apply to your unarmed strike.

It was just a nice thought because with Wightblade natural attacks from Feral would gain the negative levels etc.  Not optimized, but nice.  Apply usual quori crystals and size increase stuff to make your monk attacks hit hard anyway, and it would work.

Go with a Dvati base and call them the Wight Brothers?

Monk entry into Soul Drinker. Flavor to taste.

Yeah, you'd have that weakness.  But since you wanted to be undead anyway, it's best to have a Dread Necromancer in the party.  He'll make you a better Necropolitan, and when you can't hurt the undead, he'll just control them.  Oozes are pretty rare, so that just leaves Constructs as an annoyance.  I'd recommend glaring at them and pouting.

Not if all you have invested in is about 9k of gold (life-drinker). There is no such thing as hitting level 20 without energy drain & death effects immunity.

The rarity of oozes depends very much on the DM. I've never seen a DM who didn't love the gelatinous cube so much he sent us up against multiples of them.

Luckily they are slow, so you can just walk away and fire arrows at it all day.

You've also invested your combat style, in this, wielding dual Khukris is IMO rarely optimal. Especially not as a monk.

With Shou Disciple, it actually works just fine, which is why I suggested that.  Note that Blood in the Water works just fine against crit immunes (so does Enfeebling but those things are immune to ability damage anyhow IIRC) so you can still do something, but you'll definitely want a backup strategy for dealing with oozes and constructs if that's going to come up a bunch.
