Taken and mildly updated from The Complete Polymorph Thread 3.5 by Megaplex (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19872134/The_Complete_Polymorph_Thread_3.5). Funny Slaughter is the author of the original polymorph 3.5 thread from which a lot of this material has been pulled.

Polymorph spell description on d20srd (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/polymorph.htm)

Polymorph
Transmutation
Level:    Adp 4, Arc 4, HB 4, Sor/Wiz 4, Transformation 5, Wuj 4; Witch 4 (DMG), Vadalis Beastkeeper 4 (Dragonmarked)
Components:    V, S, M
Casting Time:    1 standard action
Range:    Touch
Target:    Willing living creature touched
Duration:    1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw:    None
Spell Resistance:    No
This spell functions like alter self, except that you change the willing subject into another form of living creature. The new form may be of the same type as the subject or any of the following types: aberration, animal, dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, ooze, plant, or vermin. The assumed form can’t have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject’s HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level. You can’t cause a subject to assume a form smaller than Fine, nor can you cause a subject to assume an incorporeal or gaseous form. The subject’s creature type and subtype (if any) change to match the new form.
Upon changing, the subject regains lost hit points as if it had rested for a night (though this healing does not restore temporary ability damage and provide other benefits of resting; and changing back does not heal the subject further). If slain, the subject reverts to its original form, though it remains dead.
The subject gains the Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores of the new form but retains its own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. It also gains all extraordinary special attacks possessed by the form but does not gain the extraordinary special qualities possessed by the new form or any supernatural or spell-like abilities.
Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to being polymorphed, and a creature with the shapechanger subtype can revert to its natural form as a standard action.
Material Component: An empty cocoon.

There are two common uses for the Polymorph spell:

For detailed information about what polymorph gives and what it takes, read Surreal's Polymorph, Wild Shape and Shapechange comparison charts: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=3479.0

Don't forget when you polymorph into a creature you turn into that type and subtype (not incorporeal/gaseous). Specific types have common natural abilities:

: Combat-only forms: non-humanoid
: cru December 22, 2010, 11:24:22 AM
I call these Combat Only forms as they do not have a Humanoid like form that would allow you to continue to wear your armor and use your weapons. So in most of these forms you will use the natural attacks of the form to deal damage.

Note: You will need to change the attack entry to reflect your BAB and new (polymorphed) Strength score. You're also losing feats (except racial), so don't include those weapon focuses or improved natural attacks.

Polymorph Any Object (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/polymorphAnyObject.htm) - Sor/Wiz 8, Trickery 8, Commerce 9 (ECS), Transformation 8
The Polymorph Any Object spell allows you to take the form of objects, which opens up Constructs and Undead as additional forms you can assume. In addition, you gain the Intelligence score of the new form.
Clarification: This article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040601a) says constructs and undead are valid forms, however, the 3.5 FAQ (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20060131a) says no.

Metamorphosis (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/metamorphosis.htm)
Metamorphosis is a 4th level egoist power. It is rather similar to polymorph.
Discussion on the differences by Garryl:
Metamorphosis (Egoist 4) as compared to Polymorph (Sor/Wiz 4):
Metamorphosis uses an exclusive selection procedure for determining the types you can turn into (all but construct, elemental, outsider, and undead), while Polymorph uses an inclusive list. Thus, any new types added to the game after the PHB/XPH (like the Deathless type) are allowed forms for Metamorphosis, but not for Polymorph (unless it was added to the allowed types list when introduced or something). Are there any good deathless to metamorph into?
Metamorphosis also allows you to take the form of an object (maximum hardness 14). You can still manifest powers as an object, but the first one you do ends the power. As an object, Metamorphosis's duration is 1 hour/level instead of 1 minute/level.

Greater Metamorphosis (Egoist 9) vs. Shapechange (Drd 9, Sor/Wiz 9):
Greater Meta is 1 min/level (1 hour/level as an object). Shapechange is a flat 10 min/level.
Greater Meta costs 200 xp. Shapechange costs nothing, but has a 1500 gp focus.
Greater Meta changes form as a swift action, Shapechange as a free action. Both can only be done 1/round.
Greater Meta can turn you into an object (similar to regular Metamorphosis, but it doesn't impede your manifesting).

Construct forms for a metamorphed psicrystal (by CrimsonDeath taken from here (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=10479.msg395114#msg395114))

Attack: 2 Spiked Chain +10 melee (2d6+5+1d6 electricity)
Benefits: Lawful subtype, quadruped

Retriever (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/demon.htm#retriever): 10HD, Huge, Speed 50, NA +10, Str 31, Dex 17; MM/SRD
Attack: 4 claws +15 melee (2d6+10), Bite +10 melee (1d8+5)
Benefits: Improved Grab

Clay Golem (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/golem.htm#clayGolem): 11HD, Large, Speed 20, NA +14, Str 25, Dex 9; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 slams +14 melee (2d10+7)
Benefits: Berserk, Cursed Wound

Stone Golem (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/golem.htm#stoneGolem): 14HD, Large, Speed 20, NA +18, Str 29, Dex 9; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 slams +18 melee (2d10+9)

Marut (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/inevitable.htm#marut): 15HD, Large, speed 40, +16 NA, Str 35, Dex 13; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 slams +22 melee (2d6+12) [Fists of Thunder and Lightning is Su and so doesn't carry over]
Benefits: Lawful subtype

I left off the Flesh Golem and animated Objects because they didn't look especially appealing (that is, they didn't seem comparable to other forms that were already available).  I left off the Shield Guardian because it has the same HD as the Marut and lower abilities.  I left off the Homunculus because the only thing it has that a psicrystal lacks is a venomous bite, and you can just put contact poisons on the psicrystal if you want to try something like that.  I left off the Kolyarut because its Su and Sp abilities are what makes it dangerous; without them, it's laughable.

I included the Clay Golem largely because of the Cursed Wound ability, for those annoying enemies who Telport or Plane Shift away after they're down to about half health.  Berserk shouldn't be a huge problem for Psions: If you used Share Power, you can just move more than 5' away and he goes from a 10' tall lump of angry mud to a 1" long harmless rock, and if you manifested it as a touch power you can run for the hills and wait for it to calm down or just dismiss the power.

The best ones are probably the Zelekhut (can carry 459lb aloft at ML 8-- faster and more weight capacity than a Cloaker-- and energy damage), the Retriever (five attacks and Improved Grab-- not as many as a 10HD hydra, but better Str, Dex, and NA) and possibly the Marut (just for brute Strength).

These spells do not have the Polymorph Subschool, but unlike the Polymorph spell, the only let you assume the form and very specific abilities of a creature.

New polymorph like spells from Spell Compendium:
ASPECT OF THE EARTH HUNTER
Transmutation

Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You

When you cast this spell, you assume the physical appearance and many of the qualities and abilities of a bulette (MM 30). While under the effect of the spell, your creature type changes to magical beast, and your size changes to Huge. You have the space and reach of a bulette (XX feet/XX feet). You gain the Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution of an average bulette (Str XX, Dex XX, Con XX), but you retain your own mental ability scores. Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, and base saving throw bonuses all remain the same. You lose any extraordinary special abilities of your own form, as well as spell-like and supernatural abilities. You keep all extraordinary special attacks derived from class levels (such as a barbarian's rage or a rogue's sneak attack), but you lose any from your normal form that are not derived from class levels. You cannot speak or cast spells while in bulette form. However, if you have the Natural Spell feat, you can cast spells normally.
Your natural armor bonus becomes +XX, regardless of any natural armor bonus from your normal form. You can make two claw attacks, which are natural weapons that deal 2d8+8 points of damage. : Polymorph subschool spells
: cru December 22, 2010, 11:27:51 AM
Compared to the Polymorph spell, these have had their target changed to only the caster, duration changed to rounds/level (instead of minutes/level) but they are also now Swift Action to cast.
Casting Time: 1 swift action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 round/level (D)

And because of the Polymorph subschool, you lose your spell casting class feature!

Polymorph subschool text from Complete Mage
A feature introduced in Player's Handbook II and further developed in this book is the polymorph subschool, which is defined and explained below.
A spell of the polymorph subschool changes the target's form from one shape to another. Unless stated otherwise in the spell's description, the target of a polymorph spell takes on all the statistics and special abilities of an average member of the new form in place of its own except as follows:
• The target retains its own alignment (and personality, within the limits of the new form's ability scores).
• The target retains its own hit points. The target is treated has having its normal Hit Dice for purpose of adjudicating effects based on HD, such as the sleep spell, though it uses the new form's base attack bonus, base save bonuses, and all other statistics derived from Hit Dice.
• The target retains the ability to understand the languages it understands in its normal form. If the new form is normally capable of speech, the target retains the ability to speak these languages as well. It can write in the languages it understands, but only if the new form is capable of writing in some manner (even a primitive manner, such as drawing in the dirt with a paw).
In all other ways, the target's normal game statistics are effectively replaced by those of the new form. The target loses all of the special abilities it has in its normal form, including its class features (even if the new form would normally be able to use these class features).
If the new form's size is different from the target's normal size, its new space must share as much of the original form's space as possible, squeezing into the available space (PH 148) if necessary. If insufficient space exists for the new form, the spell fails.
Any gear worn or carried by the target melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When the target reverts to its true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on its body they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items worn in the assumed form fall off and land at the target's feet.
The spellcaster can freely designate the new form's minor physical qualities (such as hair color and skin color) within the normal ranges for a creature of that kind. The new form's significant physical qualities (such as height, weight, and gender) are also under the spellcaster's control, but they must fall within the norms for the new form's kind. The target of a polymorph spell is effectively camouflaged as a creature of its new form, and gains a +10 bonus on Disguise checks if it uses this ability to create a disguise.
If the target of a polymorph spell is slain or rendered unconscious, the spell ends. Any part of the body that is separated from the whole remains polymorphed until the effect ends.
Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to polymorph spells, as are creatures of the plant type. A creature with the shapechanger subtype (such as a lycanthrope or doppelganger) can revert to its natural form as a standard action.

Whee! Polymorph, one of the few spells reprinted and added to in almost every book. Er, sort of.

Are you going to cover the Metamorphosis power? It's pretty much the psionic Polymorph, except that it has more options (like turning into an inanimate object) and wasn't erratad by the polymorph subschool. Plus, you don't need to worry about changing into a form that can move or speak because you're a Psion with awesomely component-less psionics, yeah!

The Polymorph Any Object spell allows you to take the form of objects, which opens up Constructs and Undead as additional forms you can assume. In addition, you gain the Intelligence score of the new form.

*reads the spell description*

You're making that up! What do objects have to do with Constructs and Undead?!

Because this spell can allow the subject to assume unliving forms, you can use this spell to turn the subject into a construct or undead creature.

Technically Polymorph wasn't errata'd by the Polymorph subschool, either.

Spells That Have Come Before

For the purpose of adjudicating effects that apply to polymorph spells, any spell whose effect is based on either alter self or polymorph should be considered to have the polymorph subschool. However, note that the spells' existing rules text takes priority over that of the subschool. Alter self, for instance, does not change the target's ability scores (unlike normal for spells of the polymorph subschool).

Huh. Turns out it both was and was not. Most of it is unaffected due to the spell's text overwriting the subschool's effects. However, a few things slip through.

Alter Self:
Ends immediately if slain or rendered unconscious.
Gaseous and incorporeal creatures are now immune to Alter Self (it did not have that restriction before, nor did it address the issue).
If the new form's size is different from the target's normal size, its new space must share as much of the original form's space as possible, squeezing into the available space (see PH 148) if necessary. If insufficient space exists for the new form, the spell fails.

Polymorph:
Ends immediately if slain or rendered unconscious. Originally, it only ended if slain.
If the new form's size is different from the target's normal size, its new space must share as much of the original form's space as possible, squeezing into the available space (see PH 148) if necessary. If insufficient space exists for the new form, the spell fails.

Polymorph Any Object:
Ends immediately if slain or rendered unconscious. Originally, it only ended if slain. Do not go to sleep, oh great and powerful PAO'ed Beholder Mages!
If the new form's size is different from the target's normal size, its new space must share as much of the original form's space as possible, squeezing into the available space (see PH 148) if necessary. If insufficient space exists for the new form, the spell fails.

Shapechange:
Ends immediately if slain or rendered unconscious. Originally, it only ended if slain.

Oddly enough, Baleful Polymorph doesn't have the Polymorph subschool.

*headdesk*

I don't really care what Skip wrote, he only read what he thought had been written.
Yes you can TARGET any creature or object. The forms you can turn it into are still based on the polymorph spell.

: PHB2 Excerpt
Spells That Have Come Before

For the purpose of adjudicating effects that apply to polymorph spells, any spell whose effect is based on either alter self or polymorph should be considered to have the polymorph subschool. However, note that the spells' existing rules text takes priority over that of the subschool. Alter self, for instance, does not change the target's ability scores (unlike normal for spells of the polymorph subschool).

Huh. Turns out it both was and was not. Most of it is unaffected due to the spell's text overwriting the subschool's effects. However, a few things slip through.

Likewise I question the sanity of any implied by missing 'only's ('only ends when...') in the text. Given that these spells were not written with overwriting a subschool in mind, I think you deserve to be laughed at for saying these original spells now end when sleeping.
Like it says, the spell's existing text takes priority. I say that the text's CONTEXT is equally important.

@Garryl: don't know much about metamorphosis; if you want to provide some content, you're welcome, I'll try to add it.
@Carnivore: Bladerager troll added; I've also went through the original thread and included some other suggested forms
@Psithief: The 3.5 FAQ says that PAO does NOT allow any new creature types. I'll mention this in the thread.

Here's all I can see between the Metamorphosis and Polymorph powers/spells.

Thus, any new types added to the game after the PHP/XPH (like the Deathless type) are allowed forms for Metamorphosis, but not for Polymorph (unless it was added to the allowed types list when introduced or something). Are there any good deathless to metamorph into?

Metamorphosis also allows you to take the form of an object (maximum hardness 15).

Lower HD forms are possibly useful, especially on the Psi side of things.
Metamorphic Transfer feat always deserves a mention.
Picking through all those yummy (su) abilities, can fill many a rainy day.

Player's Handbook II 101 has the spell as the frost which changes your type to outsider.

Please change the section headers (Combat Forms, Draconic Polymorph) to be more prominent, such as this:

Combat Forms
Draconic Polymorph (http://www.imarvintpa.com/dndlive/spells.php?id=5091) (Draconomicon 79)

Yar.

Also, you get types and subtypes with metamorphosis. Note that this is an easy way to gain immunity to, say, fire. Or cold. Also, spells like holy word.
: Re: The EVEN MORE Complete Polymorph Thread 3.5
: Garryl December 26, 2010, 06:13:02 PM
Doesn't the regular polymorph give you the types and subtypes as well?

The subject’s creature type and subtype (if any) change to match the new form.

Also, I just noticed that the Polymorph Subschool also prevents Plants from being affected, instead of just incorporeal or gaseous creatures. It's kind of irrelevant, though, since plants (and oozes) are naturally immune to Polymorph by their type traits.

: Lycanthromancer December 26, 2010, 06:39:12 PM
I think this might've been brought up at some point, but metamorphosis is usable by any creature capable of manifesting it. Doesn't matter if it has a Con score, is immune to polymorph, or what. I think there's one or two critters that are totally immune to shapechanging effects, but other than them, basically everything.

Cru can I request an Alter self (1-6HD via reserves of strength) addition?

Sorting forms by type for all types would be good. I can do this if need be.

It is possible to grab undead, constructs, and elemental forms as well (at the very most via PAO), so every type should be on there.

Do you have any construct forms?

Some players or player allies are constructs, e.g. warforged, artificer homunculi, psicrystals. Are there any Construct forms worth taking?

Keep in mind, staying a construct means that you stay immune to mind-affecting effects, critical hits, and all those other great things constructs are already immune to.
: Re: The EVEN MORE Complete Polymorph Thread 3.5
: cru March 24, 2011, 08:53:47 AM
@construct forms: It seems that you cannot change to constructs with polymorph:
This spell functions like alter self, except that you change the willing subject into another form of living creature.
You could change living constructs into other living constructs, I guess. How many living constructs are there?

^From MM3 p.190~193 are the Warforgeds (normal ones (1 HD), chargers (4 HD) and scouts (1 HD)) and from MM5 p.102~103, the Merchurion (22 HD...). Not sure if there's more.

I'm thinking metamorphosis, which doesn't state 'living'. (At least, not in the first paragraph.) Sorry for not specifying!

You can become nonliving constructs using Metamorphosis (or do so to your psicrystal). Note, however, that you cannot become an astral construct unless you're using Polymorph Any Object, Shapechange, or Alter Self.

Isn't there a feat that allows you to uncap spells on caster level?

A 20 HD astral construct using Alter Self? If you can swing the size category, sure!

No ectoplasmic creatures. Behold:

: Metamorphosis, Second Paragraph
You can’t assume a form smaller than Fine, nor can you assume an incorporeal, ectoplasmic, or gaseous form. You cannot take the form of any creature that has a template. Your type and subtype (if applicable) change to match the new form.

Just looking through the MM for Construct forms for a Metamorphosed Psicrystal (or possibly a Polymorphed Warforged, depending on the reading of the spell):

Zelekhut: 8HD, Large, speed 50, Fly 60 (average), NA +10, Str 21, Dex 11; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 Spiked Chain +10 melee (2d6+5+1d6 electricity)
Benefits: Lawful subtype, quadruped

Retriever: 10HD, Huge, Speed 50, NA +10, Str 31, Dex 17; MM/SRD
Attack: 4 claws +15 melee (2d6+10), Bite +10 melee (1d8+5)
Benefits: Improved Grab

Clay Golem: 11HD, Large, Speed 20, NA +14, Str 25, Dex 9; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 slams +14 melee (2d10+7)
Benefits: Berserk, Cursed Wound

Stone Golem: 14HD, Large, Speed 20, NA +18, Str 29, Dex 9; MM/SRD
Attack: 2 slams +18 melee (2d10+9)

Marut: 15HD, Large, speed 40, +16 NA, Str 35, Dex 13; MM/SRD

As this topic is relevant to my interests (since I'm currently playing an Egoist), I'll be returning with constructs from other books (if no one beats me to them).

It's a bit niche, but anything involving crystals is good if you pull out a folugub (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/folugub.htm). Good vs psionic characters, and potentially anything made out of glass or granite, depending on what your DM qualifies as 'crystal'. Basically it's a rust monster that eats crystalline stuff instead.

Also, Polymorph allows for ectoplasmic forms, while Metamorphosis doesn't, meaning warforged spell-to-power erudites can become astral constructs. Metamorphosis works on non-living creatures, but Polymorph can affect things other than the caster.

If you're going to call granite a crystal, then so is iron and over 95% of any decent piece of steel, but glass isn't (it's an amorphous solid).  It's probably best not to get into metallurgy or other branches of materials science, though, and just look at macrostructure.
